Energy is a fundamental pillar of development. It is essential for economic growth, improved living conditions, and social transformation. Endowed with abundant natural resources, Africa has considerable potential to become a major player on the global energy scene. However, many challenges remain, such as insufficient infrastructure, disparities in energy access, and the complexity of a just and climate-resilient energy transition. In this context, Agenda 2063 of the African Union serves as a strategic roadmap for shaping the continent’s energy future. By prioritizing inclusive and sustainable development, it positions the transformation of the energy sector at the heart of Africa’s growth, fully aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 7, which seeks to ensure universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy. This report reflects the outcome of rigorous data collection, analysis, and interpretation—delivering timely and reliable insights into the energy production, consumption patterns, and emerging trends across African Union Member States. It lays a strong foundation for understanding Africa’s evolving energy landscape and guiding strategic, evidence-based decision-making. Our objective is to make this publication a catalyst for dialogue, learning, and continuous improvement among all stakeholders, governments, private sector actors, regulators, development partners, and citizens. Through the expertise of the African Energy Commission (AFREC) and strong collaboration with Member States, we strive to expand energy access, promote clean energy development, and support resilient and inclusive economic growth. I am confident that this report will inspire the design and implementation of innovative energy policies and initiatives, grounded in Africa’s unique realities and ambitions. Let it serve as a shared vision and practical tool to advance toward a future where every African country has the energy resources it needs to flourish and contribute meaningfully to the global economy. Today I was a panelist at the Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Africa Conference & Expo in Cape Town, South Africa, where industry leaders and policymakers gathered to discuss the future of Africa’s energy infrastructure. During the panel on Managing Grid Resilience and Stability – Climate Change Challenges, Renewable Integration, and Large Variable Loads, I shared perspectives on how transmission systems must evolve to support increasing renewable integration and the emerging dynamics brought about by private sector participation and open access. At Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO), we have already seen the impact of climate change on infrastructure planning. In some cases, transmission lines designed based on historical wind speed data had to be reassessed and their alignment reviewed as climatic conditions evolved. This reinforces the need to factor climate resilience into how we design and upgrade our grids. As we work toward connecting power to over 600 million people across Africa and strengthening regional power integration, building resilient transmission networks will be critical. It was a privilege to attend the Africa Energy Indaba, where key conversations around Africa’s energy future are taking place. Engaging with insights from the Department of Electricity and Energy (South Africa) and industry partners such as Oryx Energies highlights how collaboration between government, industry, and innovators is critical to building a resilient energy ecosystem. One opportunity that continues to stand out for me is the role of biogas and waste-to-energy solutions in Africa’s transition to cleaner energy. Every day, thousands of tonnes of organic waste are generated across our cities and markets. When properly managed, this waste can become a powerful resource — producing renewable biogas energy, reducing landfill pressure, and regenerating soil through compost and organic fertilisers. For Africa to truly advance its energy transition, we must also embrace circular solutions that connect waste management with clean energy production. Events like the Africa Energy Indaba remind us that the future of energy in Africa will not come from one solution alone — but from innovative systems that integrate energy, sustainability, and resource recovery. Understanding global markets, potential futures and projections are need to inform today’s decisions. #8. Research is not a back-end activity – it neds to be done on the front end – allowing risk mitigation, acceleration, cost reduction – and, there is no silver bullet. #7. Investment is needed on both today’s system and assets – and the systems and technologies of tomorrow. This will take new ways to think about business models, partnerships, and financing – and will require public-private partnerships. #6. A policy-regulatory environment that allows for innovation, investment and risk is necessary. #5. The journey is an opportunity to further industrialize and will lead to sector coupling. Industrial clustering is a path to consider. #4. Plans don’t need to be perfect. We need to take the 1st steps. #3. We can’t forget about energy access and the opportunity to embrace the upcoming generations. Great discussion at the Africa Energy Indaba (IPP & PPA Conference) on the evolving electricity market in South Africa and the transition toward SAWEM. The conversation highlighted how market reform is reshaping South Africa’s energy landscape,  not only from a market and investment perspective, but also in terms of its broader social impact, the evolution of regulation and policy, and the practical implications for market participants. As the sector moves toward a competitive wholesale electricity market, the way risk is allocated across the value chain is fundamentally changing. Generators, traders, and large energy users will increasingly need the tools, systems, and capabilities to actively manage price exposure, portfolio risk, and market participation. It was a privilege to share the stage with such experienced industry leaders and contribute to an important conversation about the future of South Africa’s electricity market.
