Congratulations to NEOM and Enowa on launching this groundbreaking Grid Operators Education and Training Program! 👏 This initiative is a major step towards building capacity and innovation in energy systems. Some thoughts: Developing a skilled workforce to operate and manage modern power grids is critical for reliable, resilient, and clean energy—especially as we integrate renewable sources. This kind of program will not just empower professionals, but also accelerate the wider energy transition in the region. It would be exciting to see how the curriculum incorporates digitalization, smart grids, cyber-security, and sustainability practices. Kudos to all the teams involved. Over the past decade, the GCC region has accelerated its transition towards sustainable energy, spearheading ambitious projects in solar, wind, and nuclear technologies, driven by initiatives like Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 and the UAE's Energy Strategy 2050. This strategic pivot, necessary as the world transitions from hydrocarbons, is creating numerous employment opportunities in installation, maintenance, and R&D, which will support economic diversification and a skilled green workforce. Last week I joined valued customers and partners from across the energy sector at ADIPEC Exhibition and Conference to discuss the investment strategies and innovation that are transforming the future of energy. Here are my takeaways: 1. The world will need more energy tomorrow than it does today. To meet demand we see varying pathways based on the unique opportunities across regions, from renewables to biofuel to LNG. 2. This is driving big technology bets – the symbiotic relationship between AI and energy sees optimization balanced with rapidly increasing power demand, and operators need advanced production capabilities to meet it. 3. Success in AI will be determined by the ability to deliver across the three Ds –unlocking Data, having deep Domain expertise of complex energy infrastructure, and the extremely high accuracy that Deterministic AI brings to mission critical energy operations. This is bringing a new solution to continued priorities of making assets more effective, operations more efficient and enhancing the workforce skills to accelerate growth. At ADIPEC, I joined the Industry Roundtable 2025 hosted by 𝗛.𝗘. 𝗞𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗶𝘀 𝗔𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝘇𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗲𝗶, 𝗖𝗘𝗢 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗡𝗢𝗖, at the Centro Capital Centre in Abu Dhabi. The discussion centred on a timely question: How can the Middle East energy sector harness AI to ensure emissions accountability and drive the energy transition? Grateful for the invitation and the chance to learn from leaders across the region. The mindset has shifted from “should we adopt AI?” to “how do we adopt AI well?” with people, skills, and partnerships at the core; AI is seen as augmenting—not replacing—human judgment. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻   • 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀: predictive maintenance, production forecasting, operations optimization, and real-time emissions monitoring and accountability (including methane and CO₂). Proven pilots show large backlog reductions and faster decisions, especially for remote sites.   • 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗳 𝗔𝗜 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺; lessons from aviation and nuclear highlight the importance of human-machine interfaces and cross-sector talent.   • 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗜 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴: sense → analyze → actuate. Beyond LLMs, agentic AI and orchestration can improve grid dispatch, demand response, and permitting/document analysis.   • 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁: many projects fail from poor data and change management. Start with clear problems, pick fit-for-purpose models (often small/basic), aim for quick ROI, and reuse data/tech across the business. Build cross-functional delivery teams.   • 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆: national AI coordination, sector AI leadership, and expanding energy capacity for data centers were discussed, alongside security, resilience, and sovereignty considerations.   • 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 & 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: train companies and leadership, not just users; develop industry-specific small language/technology models and university programs with industry partners.   • 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹: AI can accelerate breakthroughs in materials, batteries, CCS, hydrogen, and even fusion "public-private collaboration is needed to capture value". As Tanya Seajay, MCM, ICD.D highlighted at the roundtable, the real gap is not in analytics but in missing supplier data. SMEs make up most of the economy yet many are absent from sustainability reporting, which forces assumptions and hides risk in the supply chain. The practical fix is supplier led data on a shared platform, with AI guiding each vendor on exactly what to submit, linking evidence to metrics, and holding a stable baseline so progress to net zero is clear and auditable.
