Talk page rules apply here. This noticeboard is for discussion and voting on changes to the wiki, reporting vandalism and wiki rule breaking, and reporting bad or unfair behaviour from GTA Wiki staff. Votes for the expiration of a Patroller's probation will also be held here.
For requests for promotion, please go to GTA Wiki:Requests for Promotion.
Voting Rules
Since voting about a change can cause arguments, here are the rules.
- Anyone can start a topic for a community vote.
- Please be civil when voting, and never condemn another user's vote.
- Voting usually lasts 3 to 5 days.
Please input your new discussions at the top by editing the "New Topic" section and adding a new heading, leaving the "New Topic" heading at the top. That way, we can easily spot it rather than looking for it and you don't have to edit the whole page each time. Staff should use the {{Resolved}} template to close successful discussions.
Discussion on moving away from Fandom[]
Hi everyone,
We have had plenty of engagement already across our social platforms, the wiki's Discord server, and the Community Noticeboard, regarding potentially moving to a new platform.
We can confirm that we have been actively discussing the idea of moving to a new domain with Staff at Weird Gloop, an independent, community-driven organisation hosting wikis and helping existing wikis move away from Fandom.
We are moving our community discussion to a dedicated page, GTA Wiki:Moving from Fandom, which contains more information and details on the proposal and, most importantly, provides a place for you to declare your interest in moving to a new platform. See you there! Monky Talk 23:15, 13 March 2026 (UTC)
Discussion on moving (forking) the wiki to a new domain[]
As some of you may know, the GTA Wiki is celebrating an important milestone this month – 20 years since the project began on this platform (when it was known as Wikicites/Wikia). This anniversary has prompted reflection on where we've been, where we are now, and where we want to go next as a community.
One topic that has come up repeatedly over the years, both internally among staff and from readers, is the possibility of moving GTA Wiki to a new domain, away from Fandom. While no decision has been made, we feel this milestone is a good opportunity to openly explore the idea and hear from those it would affect – editors and readers alike.
This is not the announcement of a move, but a community discussion. Any potential move would be a major decision with short and long-term implications, so community input would be central to any next steps. We want to be as transparent as possible and ensure all perspectives are heard.
What are some of the benefits to consider?
- Greater editorial and technical control – we would have better control over our site's layout, features, extensions and policies.
- Improved user experience – reduce intrusive ads, pop-ups and layout clutter, and improve our desktop and mobile experiences.
- Clearer identity and branding – we'd reinforce that GTA Wiki is a community-run resource, with increased credibility and recognition.
- Long-term stability and future-proofing – we can control the site's long-term direction.
Feel free to share your thoughts, whether supportive, skeptical, or somewhere in between. Questions are welcome, and we will do our best to address them.
Thank you Monky Talk 23:31, 27 February 2026 (UTC)
Comments[]
- Pros:
- Riding the GTA6 traffic wave.
- Possibly merge with WikiGTA, grandtheftwiki, to unify the 'not-Fandom' wiki community.
- Cons:
- Fandom would probably retain gta.fandom.com, so the community would split and it would create confusion.
- Fandom is the de facto standardized hub for game wiki pages.
- Neutral:
- I use an adblocker so ads don't bother me personally.
- Fandom seems to have adequate technical and editorial tools and guidelines, please give examples of what isn't possible on fandom.

- Addressing the cons/neutrals:
- A community split and initial confusion is unfortunately inevitable with a decision like this, with a combination of fighting Google's search engine optimization, Fandom's wide (but slowly dwindling, will get to that) reach, and the public's slow realization over time. However, if this move was made, it would be our hope that the advantages of a new home would help with public opinion and perspective.
- Fandom is indeed still a standardized hub for fan wikis on specific subjects, and often a site that people think of when they think of the topic. This is something we are definitely taking into consideration. However, the public outcry against Fandom for their business practices over the years, especially on YouTube, Twitter, and Reddit, has caused many other major wikis (Minecraft, Terraria, Legend of Zelda, etc) to make the move, with massive success over time. If this move were to happen, we would work to make sure people's perspective of our wiki would match those of others that have made similar moves.
- I, as well as many of the Staff and other Fandom users, also utilize adblockers due to the intrusiveness of Fandom's ads. However, the majority of users do not get this benefit, as the majority of our traffic browses the wiki on mobile browsers, usually Safari or Google Chrome, which lack the convenience of adblock extensions. Adding to this, the vast majority of readers do not have a Fandom account, which would also reduce the number of ads. These facts combined means that for most users, the experience of using this site is extremely unsatisfactory, enough to where it falls on us to make a strategic decision to make sure our user experience is more comfortable.
- Luckily, the majority of technical and editorial tools available on Fandom are already a part of the larger MediaWiki umbrella, meaning that little capability would be lost if this move were to be made. The few missing creature comforts we'd be losing would more than likely have an equivalent on another platform, with the only caveat being that we would have to learn a new system. However, many of these features (interactive maps, table checkmarks, etc) would likely be more customizable on a new platform, as well as be more smoothly integrated for the sake of loading times and ease of use.
- I hope these sufficiently answer your questions and concerns. Thank you for the feedback! BolbiiS (Profile ~ Talk ~ Edits) 10:45, 28 February 2026 (UTC)
- Addressing the cons/neutrals:
- Just because you use an ad blocker, doesn't mean the rest of our viewers do. Over 60% of our viewers are anonymous, mobile readers, meaning ads affect the absolute majority of our user base. Moreover, of the 30% of desktop users, 90% of them are anonymous, too, and likely do not have ads disabled. Forking would mean having more control over the (number of) ads displayed on articles and limiting how intrusive they are, which Fandom have become increasingly bad on.
- As for technical capabilities, Fandom's desktop vs mobile experience/editing is dreadful. We have had to create so many hacky shortcuts to fix issues that we shouldn't have on mobile. Infoboxes is the best example of this. This is just because of how thrown together Fandom is, and how layered it is with intrusive ads and hero bullshit. Moving away from it would give us a fresh take on layout and design and would be a hell of a lot easier. Monky Talk 12:33, 28 February 2026 (UTC)
- Another growing issue with Fandom is its censorship policies. Given the mature and graphic nature of the series we document, Fandom's current Terms of Service are becoming increasingly incompatible with our content. Certain words must be fully censored on pages, and some images and even character quotes deemed "too graphic" have been or have attempted to be removed altogether. Recently, the GTA Wiki's X account has received complaints from users frustrated by this excessive censorship—concerns we are ultimately unable to resolve under Fandom's current guidelines. Moving to an independent domain that can be openly marketed as uncensored would significantly benefit the wiki's long-term vision.

- I'd also like to bring forward Fandom's attempt to persuade us with the (impossible) idea of them gaining GTA "game codes", not once, but twice, instead of bringing useful improvements to the table. Monky Talk 16:21, 28 February 2026 (UTC)
- Hey there! Apologies for the miscommunication on the game codes there. I was referring to post launch activations exclusively which would be fun for the community. The game codes would come from a budget specifically set aside for the post launch time period, so there would be no pre-launch access. We understand you are considering moving platforms, and we wish to support the Fandom GTA wiki regardless of the current administrator’s desire to move. This said, we have taken note of some of your feedback and would like to dive into it more. Could we schedule a time to chat about the larger needs of the wiki? Or, alternatively, we could use this existing thread to go more into detail about some of the concerns you have or changes you wish to see made. This would help us get a better idea of how to tackle the community needs here. We currently are planning a full scale monitoring of the wiki during launch to help combat any potential issues with vandalism, and we are looking to expand upon this. While we cannot change the state of the ads on the wiki, we are able to work on things like the layout, features and extensions, branding, and mobile experiences. Once we narrow down the specifics, I can reach out internally and figure out what is possible within our resource allocation. I have also noted your concern with graphic content censorship, and I have reached out to the team to see what is possible there. We are able to manually approve images that are flagged (within reason). Please feel free to reply here or reach out to me directly via my wall or Discord.— OishiiOnIno ( talk )
