Second-guessing every sketchy email that lands in your inbox? Meet unhookd, a hackathon project by Aidan Mehal, Adam Lasoski, Zayne Paneflek, and ajscialpi that acts as your real-time phishing detector. It's a Chrome extension paired with a FastAPI backend that scans whatever email, link, or download you're currently looking at. unhookd doesn't just slap a warning label on things. It combines rule-based checks with the Gemini API to assign a risk level and then explains that risk in plain language, so you actually understand what tipped it off instead of just trusting a black box. Building a live pipeline from browser activity to backend analysis wasn't easy, especially keeping scans fast without overloading the API. But the team pulled it off, and the result is a tool that protects you while teaching you to spot red flags on your own. Read more about their build here: https://lnkd.in/gGKcEf_z

Major League Hacking is scaling up. We're officially expanding the MLH Asia-Pacific League to support 3x our previous capacity of events this season as a direct response to the innovation and dedication we've consistently seen from hackathon organizers and hackers across the region. Here are a few practical insight for organizers: apply for MLH event membership 3-4 months before your event date. Early applications give MLH's team the runway to bring the right partners, resources, and mentorship to each event & late applications limit what's possible. Facial expressions carry so much of the emotional texture in a conversation. Talia Feng, Anica Mok, Vi Do, and Gordon Chieng built VibeSense, a nwPlus hackathon project that gives blind and visually impaired people a new way to pick up on that texture in real-time, by turning facial expressions into sound. Using a webcam and DeepFace's deep learning models, VibeSense detects emotions like happiness, sadness, and surprise in real-time. An iOS companion app layers in heartbeat and breathing data through Presage's SmartSpectra technology for extra context. With a single long press gesture, the system sends this data to Google's Gemini AI, which delivers a refined emotional assessment translated into distinct beep patterns through custom Arduino hardware. The team taught themselves Swift and SwiftUI from scratch to build this integration, all while designing with accessibility first: high contrast colors and gesture based controls instead of buttons.
