Recently, I had the chance to sit down with Astronaut Christina Koch for one of the most fascinating and inspiring conversations I’ve had in years. Christina is a NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration astronaut, scientist, engineer, explorer, and, as I’m sure many of you know, a member of the Artemis II crew that recently went farther in space – beyond the moon – than any humans have gone before. Among the many things that will stay with me from our dialogue is how she has returned many times to a fundamental question at the frontiers of science and discovery: “Do we go there and learn it, or do we declare it unknowable?” That spirit framed our entire dialogue. Beyond her record-breaking achievements and the technical milestones during her time on the International Space Station and Artemis II mission – and the teamwork that made it all possible -- we discussed exploration, science, and the future partnership between astronauts, robotics, and AI. We also touched on the profound questions that define human exploration and discovery: What its like seeing Earth from above, whether its North Carolina or Ghana? What does seeing Earth as a “lifeboat” teach us about our own humanity? Why is cooperation, rather than raw intelligence alone, the key to an enduring civilization? What pushes us to advance the frontiers of exploration, science and discovery? And ultimately, what drives our search to know if we are alone in the universe? Christina has already achieved so much, including many firsts, and I was curious about what advice she’d share with young people (grownups too) who aspire to future discovery and exploration. She had a number of helpful things to say – the one that stuck with me the most was: "if your dreams are only about yourself, you’re not dreaming big enough."
