Aurora Therapeutics launches with $16M in VC funding to do gene editing for PKU with FDA platform approach in early January, and then today $BEAM announces they will do the same thing, and are only months away from the clinic. Tough out there in biotech. technologyreview.com/2026/01/09/113…

The ARPA-H THRIVE Awards are out. The original announcment wanted mutation agnostic approaches common to all disorders. Final awards are all gene editing approaches, with differentiator being different organs for each group. All academic hospitals too

One of the biggest challenges I see for Claude and AI in biotech drug development is that LLMs are based on published data, patents, etc. But when industry (and my company) try to replicate published work, the failure rate is at least 50-65%. How does the AI know what to trust?

I’ve never really thought about biotech companies being constrained by “human capital” but just by monetary capital. The costs to push through mouse, large animal testing, clinical trials after hypothesis & lead generation. Logistics and timelines to manufacture drug, CRO work.
