Usage

Template:Incumbent pope

For use in templates or in article infoboxes in which there is a separate "Pope" attribute. Syntax: [[Pope <papal name>|<papal name>]]. For articles that do not have a separate "Pope" attribute, use {{Incumbent pope 2}}.

{{Incumbent pope}} produces "Leo XIV".

Template:Incumbent pope 2

For use in templates or in article infoboxes in which there is no separate "Pope" attribute. Syntax: [[Pope <papal name>]]. For articles that have a separate "Pope" attribute, use {{Incumbent_pope}}.

{{Incumbent pope 2}} produces "Pope Leo XIV".

Maintenance

Following the death or the resignation of the reigning pope, please update both {{Incumbent pope}} and {{Incumbent pope 2}} to {{lang|la|[[Sede vacante]]}} until a new pope is elected. When the name of the new pope is announced, update {{Incumbent pope}} to [[Pope <papal name>|<papal name>]] and {{Incumbent pope 2}} to [[Pope <papal name>]]. The Roman numeral, if there is one, should be preceded with a non-breaking space ( ) in the piped-link text, as per the guideline at MOS:NBSP.

Example:

[[Pope John XXIII|John XXIII]] produces "John XXIII".

[[Pope John XXIII]] produces "Pope John XXIII".
