The Bald Range fire is an ongoing wildfire in Summerland, British Columbia in the Okanagan. It started on August 7, 2026 and grew extremely rapidly to 5,000 hectares and by the next day, its size had reached 10,000 hectares. It is one of the most significant and fastest-growing wildfires of the year.[3][4][5][6] As a result, evacuations were ordered for the entire community of Summerland (population 12,000) along with 8,000 people from the nearby Peachland area.[7]
The fire has so far caused one death of an 80-year-old woman who tried to evacuate.[8] BC premier David Eby declared a state of emergency on August 8 as the fire creates its own weather systems. Prime Minister Mark Carney put the Canadian military on standby to assist.[9] Eby described it as "explosive". The spread of the fire is atypical, and the wind and fire on ignition night channeled it downhill, intensifying as it approached the lake.[10]
By Saturday, August 8, the province had declared a state of emergency and ordered 20,000 residents in the Summerland and Peachland area to evacuate.[7] Evacuees were advised to go to reception centres in West Kelowna and Penticton. An estimated 50,000 farm animals on 146 farms had to be left behind.[11] Some animal handlers were allowed to stay in the evacuation zone to tend to the animals.[8]
On Tuesday, August 11, 100 firefighters from Mexico arrived to fight the fire. With the Mexicans, there were 193 firefighters assigned to the Bald Ridge fire with support from 14 helicopters and structure protection crews. Crews were challenged because of the heat, steep terrain and new fires starting beyond the perimeter of the main fire.[11] There were very dry conditions in the forest making fire ignition more likely.[7]
By August 14, evacuation orders had been rescinded for Peachland and for 400 Trout Creek properties east of Highway 97. Other evacuation orders for the District of Summerland remained in effect. Returning residents were warned of downed trees, damaged buildings and roaming bears.[11]
The fire has in addition devastated nearby Prairie Valley, Garnett Valley, Meadow Valley and Faulder,[12] likely damaging Prairie Valley station on the Kettle Valley Steam Railway.[13][14]
