Each year, the Dimitris N. Chorafas Foundation honours two early-career researchers at ETH Zurich for outstanding doctoral theses. Among the current award recipients is Fabio Enrico Furcas, who completed his doctorate in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering.
Transport is Switzerland’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, producing around 14 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalents each year. While buildings and industry have significantly reduced their emissions since 1990, transport has largely stalled. The main reason lies on the road: passenger cars account for around 77% of all land-based passenger kilometres. The pace at which the vehicle fleet electrifies will therefore be crucial.
