Unreal Tournament PS3 Preview
- BERJAYA 0 Comments
Thanks to Planet Unreal for the link to this Unreal Tournament 3 preview at Games Radar which takes a gander at the PS3 version of the game.
Having sampled the game first-hand, its clear Unreal 3 is shaping up to be something special. While the franchises absence from our machines may have been a protracted one, the series is looking like its going to be returning to PlayStation better, slicker and more frantic than ever. With its stunning arsenal of weapons, countless vehicles, incredible multiplayer action and compelling single-player campaign, Unreal Tournament 3 has the potential to be one of the most complete FPS packages ever. And not too far off from now, youll be able play it for yourselves.

Team Fortress 2 Patch
- BERJAYA 0 Comments
Where did my stats go? (cry) Valve released another beta patch for Team Fortress over the weekend:
  • Fixed certain crashes with paged pool memory
  • Added a warning for when paged pool memory is low
  • Fixed some prediction errors with player avoidance
  • Fixed columns and row bunching up in server browser
  • Fixed a rare bug where the wrong launcher.dll was being used to launch the game
  • Fixed teleporter/spawn doorway exploit
TF2 is my pick for multiplayer game of the year (so far).

Epic: "No Money in Wii Engines"
- BERJAYA 1 Comment
Further endearing himself to Nintendo fans around the world, Epic's Mark Rein who suggests that there's No Money in Wii Engines:
"I don't think there's a lot of money in making engines for the Wii."

"What we're doing is the really high-end, next-generation visuals," he said. "We're pushing these machines real hard. I just think that we have too many things on our plate to go back and put resources into that kind of thing."

They could always re-package the Unreal Engine 1.0 for it. :) Ho, ho, ho...

Big-Ass Witcher Preview (s)
- BERJAYA 0 Comments
RPG Watch conjured up a rather large preview of The Witcher (part one and two) after getting a preview build of the game. Plenty of new media and impressions included:
You play the predefined character, Geralt of Rivia a professional monster hunter and expert swordsman known as a witcher - a small cult who undergo arduous training along with deadly rituals and mutating potions to give them superhuman strength and reflexes but leaving them not quite human. Their position in society is a reflection of the complex world Sapkowski has shaped persecuted and feared as mutants but their services are often needed, as they travel the lands slaying monsters for pay. Soon after the game opens, the witchers decaying mountain fortress of Kaer Morhen is attacked and the survivors set out in different directions to search for answers.
The Witcher is like Poland's version of Britney Spears. But with a sword (cough).

Having a swanky weekend, I hope? I'll be gone a couple of days next week on a trip to Epic, but Andy and the gang should keep you covered. My goal for today is to stay up all night so I can get my biological clock to East Coast time so I'm not a zombie for the visit. On the bright side, that means more Sunday updates.

We're bringing on another poster here shortly as well (Matt from Planet Call of Duty), so there shouldn't be much downtime in the news department while I'm away. I'd post on the road, but mobile gaming notebooks desktop replacements are good for neither gaming or mobility unless you like lugging an extra bag around. Anyways, it looks like you guys dig the Hellgate, so we'll be bringing you more next weekend. News is usually slow on Sat/Sun, so little nuggets like those help spice things up [as we slack off].

Um, I can't think of a good QoTD at the moment, but I'll come up with something after the news...

P.S. Woot D-Backs!

Hellgate London DX10 Shader Comparison
- BERJAYA 54 Comments
One of the DirectX 10 games that hasn't gotten much love thus far from the graphics mongers is Hellgate London. Sure, everyone knows about DX10 titles like Crysis, but believe it or not, Hellgate London's visuals really aren't that shabby. In fact, they're quite attractive. While the DX9 and DX10 clients generally look the same, DX10 does offer a few bells and whistles that DX9 does not.

BERJAYA

Most notable are DX10 smoke and lighting effects, plus two higher levels of version 4.0 shaders: very high and extreme. Very high shaders retain the original artistic look of the game, while extreme adds some serious field of depth effects (causing objects to blur). Which looks better? That depends on your taste, but here are a few sets of comparison images which should give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

Make sure to examine the full-sized 1680x1050 nudies, as the mid-sized shots don't do them justice.

Why the Halo Movie Won't Work
- BERJAYA 35 Comments
Sure, Halo has made a ton of cash as a videogame, but movie studios are leary of spending untold millions of dollars to make a movie to do it justice. Why? Here's what Newsweek thinks in simple English:
While the 4.2 million units equate to major profit for Microsoft, that same audience would amount to major failure for Fox and Universal. If each of the roughly 11 million Xbox 360 owners buys two tickets to the film, it is still a bust. Of course a film would be made to appeal to a larger audience, but despite best intentions, that rarely happens. Absent a significant leap of faith, or hubris, Halo may never be a film. For Halo fans, that could be a good thing. It could even be a good thing for Microsoft. Games are a stand-alone medium. Financially, compared to film, they are a much better one.
Thanks, Rotten Tomatoes.

Bungie Clarifies its Total Freedom

Witchboy Pimps out Blacksite: Area 51
- BERJAYA 5 Comments
Harvey "Witchboy" Smith, best known for his work on Deus Ex, is over at Gamasutra this evening in a lengthy 8-page interview promoting his new game, Blacksite: Area 51. Much of the game is set in Iraq.
Part of it is taking place in Iraq. How much are you doing with that element?

Quite a lot, actually. When I first wrote the one-page BlackSite story, it ignored things like, "Sure we want to steal some of the breakables from Stranglehold. We've got vehicles, [and so on]." We eventually did squad command and this interesting squad morale feature, and I think those are cool. But always in the background, I was like, "Look, I'm really fucking angry right now. Everything I read pisses me off." You can do this two ways: you can be super heavy-handed and propagandize -- and I wasn't interested in that -- or you can try to organically weave something through the entire work. If you do that, you run the risk of minimizing it so much that nobody notices it.

I think that we've actually done a pretty good job of not pushing it down your throat, and yet not letting it vanish either. It's very much there. The game starts in Iraq. You're Aaron Pierce, this Delta Force assassin, essentially. Something happens to one of your squadmates in Iraq. You're looking for weapons of mass destruction that aren't there, of course, and then you move into small-town America. At that point, you're U.S. special forces operating on American soil. It's subtle stuff, but moving into the first mission where you're about to be briefed, you're going past people and cars and checkpoints that have been quarantined. They're going, "Hey, you guys can't do this," and somebody else is saying, "The hell we can't."

Then it just gets more and more subversive from there as Pierce figures out that the primary enemy in the game, which is being called an insurgency operating on U.S. soil, is really wounded American soldiers from Iraq who are being disappeared by the government, taken underground, and experimented on with regard to this "Army of One"-type program. So we go into the Walter Reed allusions, and the Abu Ghraib allusions, and we try to do it in such a way that won't make people vomit or whatever, but at the same time, it's definitely there. The whole theme is, "Who is the enemy? Look at the enemy -- do I look like the enemy to you?" One year, somebody's a freedom fighter, the next year they're a terrorist.

Thanks, Beyond Unreal.

StarCraft 2 Screenshots - Protoss Carrier
- BERJAYA 6 Comments
Mmmm.... tasty..... Blizzard kicked up some Protoss Carrier goodness for you to enjoy this evening.
The massive carriers serve as operations centers for leaders of the protoss fleets. Heavily armored and shielded, carriers can punch their way through enemy blockades by unleashing flights of robotic interceptors at vital enemy targets. These maneuverable, computer-guided craft tear through enemy flight formations and relentlessly strafe slower ground targets with potent plasma charges.

Interceptors are automatically manufactured and serviced inside the carriers bays, and a number of prepped interceptors can be launched in rapid succession. In battle, carriers appear to be virtual hornets nests of activity as their agile offspring dart out to launch their attacks and retreat just as rapidly to repair any damage they sustain. Terran scientists have long yearned for an opportunity to study just how the smoothly orchestrated operations of a carrier are achieved in detail.

Most carriers have no weapon batteries of any kind, but their deployment of interceptor flights makes them devastating in a ship-to-ship battle. However, a handful of heavily armed "super carriers" exist, most famously the Gantrithor. This was the flagship of Executor Tassadar when he led a protoss expeditionary force in its attempts to eradicate the zerg in terran space. The Gantrithor was powerful enough that it single-handedly defeated an entire terran battlecruiser squadron under the command of General Edmund Duke. Tassadar later sacrificed himself and his ship to destroy the zerg Overmind when it manifested on Aiur.

Age of Conan Weekly Update
- BERJAYA 2 Comments
This week's Age of Conan update is a developer profile for Elliot Kingdon, aka FunCom's "Lore Guy".
How hard is it to adhere to Lore when you're making an MMORPG? Where does the team draw the line between staying true to the lore and making a balanced, fun game with mechanics that work?

A computer game is a change of medium, the same way as films are, inevitably different from the novels they are based on. Players should be prepared to enjoy Robert E. Howard's Conan universe in a new way, through an MMORPG experience. It will inevitably be a different experience from the books, but will still reflect the same Conan spirit and adventure (and plenty of blood).

Peter Jacksons Lord of the Rings trilogy, Chris Nolan's Batman Begins and the recent Casino Royale film are all good examples of film-makers retelling stories and reinventing or re-examining characters to great effect. Mark Waids Kingdom Come and Mark Millars Ultimates graphic novels are also excellent examples of presenting favorite characters from fresh view-points.

Lore is an invaluable framework. Staying true to it and producing a fun game need not be mutually exclusive. And nothing we do in the MMO will violate the original stories, theyll still be right there on the shelf.

FilePlanet has the Universe at War beta, which is the upcoming RTS from Petroglyph Games (best known for its "Star Wars: Empire at War" title). Keys are given out on a first-come, first-served basis (provided you have a FilePlanet sub). Quake Wars Linux Update
- BERJAYA 2 Comments
id's Timothee Besset updated the Quake Wars website with news on the Linux versions of the game.
There's been a ton of interest from the Linux Community, so I wanted to give you all a status update on development.

On the server front, we've now released stable server builds for the demo and the retail release. There are over 1,300 servers running the Linux version already (more than Windows in fact) so as a Linux proponent myself, I'm really pleased with its popularity.

I've also been making steady progress with the Linux Client, and it's coming along really well. We've been running a closed-beta test for 'friends and family' for a little while, and for the past couple of weeks have had a fully functional version of the demo running. The closed-beta testers are now able to play alongside Windows players on the same version, with full Punkbuster support. The major systems including the renderer and audio are working great, and performance has been good on both the NVIDIA and ATI graphics cards.

Alongside my other responsibilities at id, my focus now is on optimization for the Linux Client. If everything goes to plan, we should have the Linux Client ready for release in just a few weeks.

Bungie Weekly Update: Free At Last
- BERJAYA 19 Comments
As you might have guessed, the Bungie weekly update is about the company gaining its freedom.
As you have no doubt read on the web today, Microsoft Corp. and Bungie Studios, have reached an unprecedented and exciting agreement starting immediately, Bungie will become an independent company and will retain a long-term publishing agreement with Microsoft Game Studios for Halo titles. The new structure became effective on Oct. 1, 2007. The official blurb follows, but since youre a valuable part of our community, we thought wed sum it up simply and concisely.

Bungie has long been built on creativity, originality and the freedom to pursue ideas. Microsoft agreed, and rather than stifle our imagination, they decided it was in both our best interests to unleash it. Well continue to make Xbox 360 games, and well continue to make amazing games for MGS. In that regard, nothing has changed. All that has changed is that now Bungie Studios is once again, the property of the folks of Bungie Studios. Microsoft is and will continue to be, a brilliant, inventive and creatively collaborative publishing partner. Practically speaking, nothing has changed and you guys wont see much, if any difference, for a while unless you come to work for us, that is were hiring at http://www.bungie.net/inside/jobs.aspx
