Harvey Smith: In-Depth On Blacksite

by hal at 2:45 PM EDT (U-Engine Games) 5 Comments / Permalink
Gamasutra has conducted an extended interview with Midway's Harvey Smith, best known for his work on Deus Ex. They discuss Blacksite: Area 51 and the future of gaming.
Gamasutra: In the Xbox Live demo, there were aliens everywhere and you could shoot them, but the thing I heard people respond to was when you sent a guy over to open a door and he couldn't open it, so he broke the window and unlocked it from behind. That was the thing everyone responded to; that's just a logical thing that would happen in real life.

HS: It's funny that you would say that, because you never know what those things are going to be. In Deus Ex, we had a meeting with this guy we hated, the same guy who gave us a management lecture saying that if we all dressed properly -- meaning Dockers and khaki pants -- then our troops would respect us. Before he left, though, that guy said, "You know what would be fun in this game? If I could go into the women's restroom and get bitched out for it by some woman." We all just went, "Please leave," and then he left.

Later, we were like, "Hey, that's kind of interactive. What if we put a trigger in the bathroom, and if you happen to wander in there, your boss later says, 'And by the way, JC, stay out of the women's restroom,' at the end of the briefing?" And we did it, and everybody who played Deus Ex commented on it. We couldn't believe it. We were like, "Dude, they didn't even notice our weapon modification system, but they noticed you broke this social taboo."

Similarly, we realized [this] with the Xbox Live demo that the moment it's raining at night and you're in a convenience store and you're looking through the glass. The reborn scout is shaking this van, and right before he kills the guy in the van and rips the door off, the guy inside the van tries to roll up the window. People responded to that. It's these little character building moments that [matter].

Gears of War Movie Woes

by TWD at 10:40 AM EDT (General Site News) 24 Comments / Permalink
IESB.net has recieved several updates in relation to the Gears of War movie that is in the works. Reports are claiming that Len Wiseman will not be directing the film. In fact according to their source New Line Cinema is considering dropping the film due to budget concerns.

Does this mean Len Wiseman will now be moving forward with the highly anticipated Gear of War film? Nope, the IESB has been informed Wiseman is off Gears as well*** and that New Line Cinema will most likely not move forward with the film at all. Our source is saying that the studio has concerns with ballooning budget of the film.

[...]

I clarified with my source, the status of Gears of War. Yes, Chud, Len Wiseman is still on the project currently, but it doesn't look good, due to the budget concerns the studio has, New Line will most likely not be moving forward on this film.

CliffyB Wants Charisma, Not Muscles, For GoW Movie Cast

by TWD at 10:33 AM EDT (General Site News) 19 Comments / Permalink
GameDaily has posted an interview with CliffyB where he discusses what he's looking for in the upcoming Gears of War movie.

The Rock is the rare exception of a wrestler who is that charismatic that he can carry a movie. If they cast four mongoloid wrestlers in Gears and they're just as exciting to watch as paint dry on the screen, nobody's going to go see it. They can make actors buff by working out for a few months before filming. You don't have any sense of scale when you watch a movie. They can make a badass with camera angles. What matters is charisma because you can't fake that.

Pariahs Guild interviews Chris Sherland

by Hunter at 9:43 AM EDT (Unreal Engine News) 1 Comment / Permalink
Pariahs Guild finally got to interview a proper game developer, Chris Sherland.
Noobkiller: Thank you for accepting this interview, can you tell a little about yourself?

Chris Sherland: I am the producer for Warmonger here at NetDevil.

Noobkiller: To be honest, I never heard of Warmonger before. Can you tell the readers of the blog and I whats the back story for this game?

Chris Sherland: Warmonger was born through a partnership between Ageia and NetDevil. Ageia wanted to find developers who could help unlock the potential of the PhysX processor and firmware, and we at NetDevil wanted a platform where we could develop a game that took destruction to the next level.
The entire interview can be found here.

Mark Rein "No Money in Wii Engines"

by Hunter at 9:37 AM EDT (Unreal Engine News) 14 Comments / Permalink
With all the pretty effects the Unreal Engine can produce Mark Rein has stepped up to the plate and said:
"I don't think there's a lot of money in making engines for the Wii."

"What we're doing is the really high-end, next-generation visuals," he said. "We're pushing these machines real hard. I just think that we have too many things on our plate to go back and put resources into that kind of thing."
Thanks to Game trailers and CVG for the news and the entire interview.

CliffyB On Gears And Breaking Into The Games Industry

by hal at 1:50 PM EDT (Gears of War) 6 Comments / Permalink
Kotaku has a short write-up of a recent trip to North Carolina to talk with Cliff Bleszinski about Gears of War PC. After calling Halo 3 a "giant bathtub where all of these vehicles stir around and enemies spawn in this giant mixture of combat", he went on to talk about a great way to break into the games industry:
There are a half-dozen employees at Epic Games that came from the mod community.

"These are guys that I had been corresponding with since they were 16 years old," said Bleszinski. "They'd just got their drivers licenses and instead of being teenagers and going out chasing girls they were wanting to be in the business and now they have great jobs and are making a living developing games. Some of these guys I've had mentoring relationships with for seven or eight years, where I'd download a map and check it out because I thought it was cool and e-mail the designer and give him tips. This would lead to putting them on contract or purchasing their maps and eventually some of them would come on board on a trial basis and eventually they'd end up with a job here.

Gears of War (PC) Preview

by hal at 12:22 PM EDT (Gears of War) 1 Comment / Permalink
IGN has a new Gears of War hands-on preview with lots of nice details as well as new screenshots and a video interview interspersed with some nice new multiplayer footage.
There are three entirely new multiplayer maps here, each of which ties in nicely to the single player campaign without actually duplicating any of the content. The first is Courtyard, a bright and open level that feels and looks a lot like Embry from the beginning of the game. There's a large staircase leading down to an open courtyard flanked by two elevated landings. What's great about this level is that both teams can spot each other pretty much right away, so there's no chance to sneak up on the opposition. Fortunately, the teams start too far from each other to actually shoot at one another and there's plenty of short cover you can use as you move through the middle of the courtyard.

The Goldrush map is a multi-tiered emulsion plant with pipes full of glowing, flowing liquid all around. Stairways at either end of this narrow level give players an option to head upstairs to a wide catwalk with plenty of areas of cover and some interesting vantage points to take shots at players who are fighting it out on the lower levels.

The third map is called Sanctuary and it's probably the biggest departure for the series with plenty of gothic-style horror movie atmosphere. The whole level is very dark and very stoney and takes place in a sort of non-denominational religious center.

Unreal.fr Inteviews The Creator Of Team Arena Master

by DeathBooger at 10:30 AM EDT (UT 3 Modifications) 34 Comments / Permalink
Unreal.fr has an interview with Michael "MaStur" Massey, producer of the TAM mod for UT2004. The interview discusses the evolution of the mod, as well as if TAM will be making an appearance in UT3.
8/ Have you announced a new version ? If so, do you have a release date, and what are the main features or changes coming with of them ?

We have not announced a new version, we're waiting patiently.

9/ And for the major question, will Tam be ported to UT3?

Most people don't know that the transition from TAM v2.57 to TAM v3.x involved a complete re-write of the game code to prepare it for rapid porting to UT3. We've been planning ahead. original

10/ Will Tam on UT3 be the end of development for UT2004 Tam?

TAM for UT2k4 is a wrap, we won't be releasing a new version.

Gears Of War Movie Script Writer Speaks

by hal at 10:09 AM EDT (Gears of War) 9 Comments / Permalink
Stuart Beattie, the writer tapped for the Gears of War movie script, is perhaps best known for his treatment of the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean. GamePro talks to him about the Gears movie as well as Hollywood's cautious interest in movies based upon games.
Gamers wondering what a Gears of War movie might look like need only to rent Warner Bros.' Blu-ray Disc or HD-DVD of 300. Many film critics called that international blockbuster a movie that looked like a videogame. Now there might be a game that looks like a game on the big screen.

"To me, that's a good movie because that's a movie that is getting people talking about, reading into it," said Beattie. "It's interesting. Everyone's talking about 300. They use it as an example of where things are headed. That film was shot completely on green screen, which is amazing when you actually see the film. It's probably how we're going to do Gears of War."
