How Much Do I Hate E3?

Starting last Friday, IGN finally surrended to the tidal wave known as E3. To those of you (both) who don't know what that is and yet visit our site regularly, it's a big gaming convention where all of the fans and media sites and platform companies get together to talk about how awesome they all are in lieu of having girlfriends (the Gamecube channel's Matt Cassamassina is married and has a baby, but I'll have to figure out that gamer-geek anomaly later). What that means for yours truly is that the work that I normally do isn't even going to get a chance to be ignored like usual.

Now, I'm sure there are cool gamers out there, and that some of them might even work for IGN. But for some reason just the phrase "E3" seems to give everyone in my office, much less this industry, license to do whatever they want whenever; I guess it's sort of like when Mario eats a mushroom and gets all big (yes, that's about as recent as my game knowledge gets). Today the office was basically filled from Am to PM with the sounds of Sony execs singing their own praises while our gaming teams sat around and, uh, I have no idea. Quite frankly, I can't imagine how they could even concentrate on what the dude was saying (in Japanese, no less) given the fact that the volume was absolutely deafening. Of course, the reponse to my request to turn it down? "It's E3."

I have come to realize that in the grand scheme of things at IGN, DVD isn't much of a priority - I mean, when you can cross-promote some game launch on five channels at a time with a phalanx of writers for each site, does it really make a difference if my interview with Dom DeLuise is new or old, or if it's exclusive or not? No, it does not. But that brings me to my point: I hate E3. Not because it completely dominates traffic on IGN for more than a week. Not because games are more important to our readers than a good Criterion Collection DVD. And certainly not because everyone except the other entertainment guys are out of the office for a week (now I can play my Spice Girls CD in peace, dammit!).

No, it's because it lends credulity to the claim amongst some of the people who work for IGN that what they do is the be-all end-all of existence, which is especially important to them because it's the be-all and end-all of their own existence, and it encourages them to devalue such highfalutin concepts as teamwork and cooperation (or even basic human courtesy) because, hey, it's E3.

So if by chance you come to IGN DVD this week, you might just see a few advance reviews of stuff like the new Napoleon Dynamite DVD, or coverage of my new favorite show Scrubs. Oh yeah, and an exclusive interview with Eric Bana about the new Munich DVD. But you won't find any E3 coverage anywhere, unless someone has pried the channel from my cold, dead hands, and replaced that Star Wars news story with something about some game where a guy runs and you make him shoot people and it's just like every other game except he's got TWO tails (take that, Sonic!).

Good night, Godspeed and go to hell E3.

Get on the Gilchrist Train!

Okay, so we're now doing blogs, whose existence I've often attributed the decline and downfall of journalism as we know it. And I have to do one, despite not being able to find enough time to kick out the jams on those Nick Picks and PBS documentaries readers have been clamoring for. So here it is, suckas - the real-deal, O.G. blog from Mr. Todd Gilchrist, where I definitely plan to talk about other things than just DVDs (especially if Matt Cassamassina keeps calling me out on my Weather Man hate).

Things you will henceforth find on my Blog:

*Links to reviews
*General comments about current theatrical releases
*Observations about how the world is going to hell
*Music playlists
*Snarky, retaliatory responses to angry readers
*Recipes!

Currently I am in the exhaustive process of watching all of the extras on the forthcoming DVD release for King Kong, which will post on Tuesday. You can check out an early look at my efforts by clicking here. Or be patient and wait for the full review Tuesday.
