Galactic Conquest Revealed!
Hey folks, Mike Rosser here. One area of Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron that we haven’t really touched on in these blogs is Galactic Conquest. I’d like to remedy that today by briefly describing the all-new Galactic Conquest mode, and explaining the design process behind it.
In the previous games in the series, I felt that the Galactic Conquest mode was good at giving you a sense of the galaxy and your inexorable march to dominion, and good at providing a context for the individual battles, but not so good at providing strategic and tactical options. My aim with the Galactic Conquest redesign was to make the metagame (i.e. the galactic level play) more involving and strategic (yet without alienating and overwhelming the casual player).
One issue I identified was the lack of short-term goals. In the original design, the objective is simply to take over the galaxy, planet by planet. I felt that was a bit monolithic, and potentially overwhelming, so I broke the galaxy down into 4 quadrants of 3-5 planets each. Now the player has an overall objective (capture the galaxy) but also sub-objectives (capture all the planets in a given quadrant). When the player owns all the planets in a quadrant, they are rewarded in two ways: extra credits per turn and the option to hire a commander, such as Admiral Ackbar or Grand Moff Tarkin, who provide special bonuses.
Another area I wanted to enhance was resource management. The player now has one resource -- credits, earned per turn for each planet/quadrant owned -- and two main outlets to spend it on: technology upgrades/commanders and military units. Rather than purchasing an abstract ‘fleet’, as before, the player uses credits to purchase military units that are garrisoned on individual planets. These units are then linked to the number of reinforcements in the planetary battles. So, let’s say I have 100 units on Kashyyyk and the enemy has 50 units on neighbouring Boz Pity. If I send 75 units to attack Boz Pity in the galactic metagame, when I actually play out the planetary battle, I’ll start with 75 reinforcement tickets and the enemy will start with 50.
As you can imagine, these changes make the all-new Galactic Conquest mode more strategic and thoughtful...if I buy more troops for Yavin 4, I can launch a mass attack on Korriban and take control of the entire quadrant, then hire Mon Mothma who will give me a planetary income bonus. But! Ord Mantell only has 20 troops garrisoned on it, which isn’t many -- if I buy more troops for Yavin 4, I can’t afford any for Ord Mantell, leaving the quadrant vulnerable to a counter-attack. Hmmm. Maybe I should sit tight until I can afford to buy the technology upgrade that lets me garrison more troops per planet, so I can consolidate my position.
Choices, choices!
And now, another Renegade Squadron team blog exclusive: The Galactic Conquest tutorial video directly from the game.
