Nintendo graphic update by Cobalt_Spirit in NintendoSwitch

[–]AncientDaedala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come to the Nintendo Switch 2, we have modest update for Animal Crossing, yet another tennis game, GBA games (20$ each), a cozy building game, a multiplayer expansion to a single player game, a cozy decorating game, a graphics update that makes Xenoblade X look worse, and a cozy Yoshi game. Next month? Another retelling of Star Fox 64. This lineup is so lame. Fortunes Weave can't release soon enough.

I just watched the Super mario galaxy movie and I'm concerned. by Murky_Guidance_7273 in CharacterRant

[–]AncientDaedala 52 points53 points  (0 children)

What I hate the most about the Mario movies is the way defenders will regurgitate the same trite lines to dismiss the many reasonable criticisms. "It's not Citizen Kane", "You can't expect good stories from Mario", "It's for the fans", "It's just a kids movie".

Nobody says stuff like this for the Mario games. If someone thinks Paper Mario Sticker Star or Mario & Luigi Paper Jam would have benefited from better writing, that is reasonable criticism. Nobody pushes back against the idea that Bowser in Sticker Star should have been portrayed better. If someone wants to be introduced to the series, they can pick just about any game in the series, especially since the games are enjoyable without prior knowledge of the Mario series.

If it's reasonable to expect the games to the be the best in their genre, it should also be reasonable to expect the Mario Movie to be good compared to other animated films. It's not a good comedy because it's overly reliant on references and the pacing doesn't give the jokes a chance to breathe. It's not a good story because, as you said, nothing really happens. There's no character development and the only meaningful revelation is a footnote on a character sheet. It's not good for introducing people to Mario because it never explains things.

It doesn't instill confidence in other Nintendo movies.

[TP] Twilight Princess’ ‘Slow Opening’ is Actually Perfect by Skeith-Reviews in zelda

Two of those interactions are so simple that they could have been taught at any point, though. I rarely used horse back riding because it was usually more intuitive to warp somewhere and run as Wolf Link.

[TP] Twilight Princess’ ‘Slow Opening’ is Actually Perfect by Skeith-Reviews in zelda

[–]AncientDaedala 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree with that. I am fine with a slow burn to get into the core game if it justifies the length, but that doesn't at all happen for Twilight Princess. It's apparent that the second day only exists to demonstrate Wii motion controls. Why do you need to use a hawk to grab a cradle? Wii motion controls. Why do you need to go through a sword and slingshot tutorial? Wii motion controls. Why do you need to catch two fish for the cat? Wii motion controls. The entire opening is structured this way to be a tech demo for Wii motion control.

The article says the opening teaches you most of what you need to know to play the rest of the game, but does it? Did you really to know about fishing and bait at this point? The hawk is never used again. Hearding goats is used for an optional heart piece and nothing else. If you're not playing the Wii version, swordplay and aiming a slingshot is the same as any other Zelda game.

In terms of story, I hold the unpopular opinion that Twilight Princess's writing is a mess. The child kidnapping subplot is a blatant rehash of Wind Waker, which also started with kids being kidnapped. Link and Ilia's relationship is never explored past Epona. The two of them practically revolve around Link's horse.

The opening isn't just slow. It feels pointless, both as a tutorial and as an opening to a larger narrative.

The Switch 2 2026 lineup is shaping up to be a great one. by 479521 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]AncientDaedala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be nice to see the next Xenoblade. We haven't seen one since 2022, so I would hope four/five years later, it's ready to be shown.

But I am not hung up on the games I am most interested in not being announced yet. In an alternate reality where Star Fox was a completely new experience and Mario Tennis was a different sport (preferably baseball), I would be more content with this year so far.

The Switch 2 2026 lineup is shaping up to be a great one. by 479521 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]AncientDaedala 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"Probably...probably...probably...probably"

Those are many assumptions when we simply don't know what Nintendo has planned. I consider myself a big Nintendo fan, but I am having a hard time getting excited for the games that have released and what we know about.

I already have Tennis Aces, so I am not interested in another Mario Tennis game (it should have been a new sport). Pokopia and Tomodachi are two cozy/slice-of-life games back-to-back. Yoshi is still targeting a younger audience than other 2D Platformers (Donkey Kong & Mario). Star Fox is a reimagining of a game, but with how much effort it took, it feels like they could have made a new game with a new storyline instead. It did not need to be another retelling of 64. I like Splatoon, but I am not quite sold on the Raiders spin off.

I really hope their big holiday game isn't Ocarina of Time. OoT is my favorite game of all time, but I have played it so many times that I can't get excited for a remake. Since it has been years since the last traditional Zelda game, I would rather them have just made a new game with the traditional gameplay, especially if the remake is ambitious as the Star Fox remake.

It's also kind of annoying when people say "at least its not the Wii U days" because Nintendo was still putting out games on the 3DS. It's not exactly a fair comparison to go from the Wii U days, when Nintendo was splitting development across two consoles, to a console generation that pools everything onto one device.

I don't think this is an exciting year.

Do you think Nintendo will listen to feedback on the second mario movie? by usafpa in nintendo

[–]AncientDaedala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. The only feedback from the first one they listened to was people not liking the licensed soundtrack, but every other issue persists. The pacing is too fast, the movie doesn't slow down and breathe, the characters are underdeveloped, the comedy is surface level and too reliant on references, the list goes on.

It is disappointing. When it comes to the Mario games, it's hard to find a recently released platformer on par with Mario Odyssey or Mario Wonder (that doesn't have "Astro Bot" in the title). They are some of the best in their genre. However, when it comes to the Mario Movies, they are easily outdone by their contemporaries.

Shpeshal Nick: Nintendo is looking to pitching a Luigi’s Mansion movie by andree1234 in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]AncientDaedala 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A Luigi's Mansion movie could be great, but after the last two Mario movies, I would have a hard time looking forward to it unless they actually show some restraint and focused on telling a story first and foremost instead of playing a game of "how much nostalgia bait can we jam in 90 minutes". Being trapped in a haunted mansion is a solid premise for a film, but there is a lot more to a story than its plot.

Yes, he is in the Desert Wasteland. After crossing the first trench, you can go west and find him floating over another sand pit.

Favorite gaming community that’s definitely not constantly coping about the fact that their game isn’t universally recognized as the best game ever? by Rubicantay in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]AncientDaedala 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How could IGN give it a 6/10? I mean, I didn't watch the video so I can't refute any of their points, but when game journalists don't validate my feelings, I get angry!

I think this subreddit needs a rule where if the source is Kit & Krysta, the flare needs to say so. It does get tiring when the word of mouth of former employees (and as the years go by, the word former is doing more heavy lifting) is used as clickbait.

With the new Mario Galaxy reveal, do you think a Metroid post credit teaser is possible? by strangegoo in Metroid

[–]AncientDaedala 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Will people stop with Citizen Kane comment? Does it not occur to you that there are plenty of kids movies that aren't Citizen Kane that still have a coherent plot and memorable characters. The Lion King, Ratatouille, Spirited Away, Isle of Dogs, How to Train your Dragon. Just because it's a kid's film doesn't mean it can't accomplish more than jingling keys for 90 minutes.

The Crimson Desert Zeitgeist is shifting by [deleted] in CrimsonDesert

[–]AncientDaedala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This subreddit's reaction to the review scores is honestly getting annoying. Saying "the positives outweigh the negatives" is not the same as "the positives negate the negatives", especially when there is still a sizeable heap of negatives.

I'm enjoying the game, but every now and then, there is a weird design choice that baffles me. If this wanted to be a sandbox adventure, why are there so many slow horseback riding sections, as though it is trying to be Red Dead? Why is only Kliff able to see memories and solve all the puzzles in a game with two other playable characters? If this was meant to be a narrative driven experience, why is the writing so messy? Why do so many chapters feel like a loosely connected series of events? There are also little things like the wings draining too much stamina, needing to open individual pouches to loot coins, and not being able to skip cutscenes.

They took clear inspiration from other open world games (Tears of the Kingdom, Red Dead Redemption 2), but the execution is an unfocused hodge podge that requires you to sift through the bad stuff to get to the good stuff. I like the game when I am solving puzzles or exploring. It's a drag when I am following a slow NPC while they talk about their only character trait.

I don't like the way Zenless has been going for a while. by [deleted] in ZZZ_Discussion

[–]AncientDaedala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not surprising that this causes a stir in the comments. Oftentimes, people will look at critiques of games and misconstrue the argument, so instead of engaging with the actual discussion, they are fighting against what they decided your opinion is.

You're right. The oversexualization is holding back Mihoyo's character designs and it shows. Every time a new character is unveiled, and they have a skimpy, skintight outfit, with a thigh window, a chest window, and some random cutouts, it feels completely focus tested, instead of something that came from a natural synthesis between the character's personality and their backstory. After time, it gets boring seeing the same tropes in the character designs.

Does the open world feel empty to anyone else? by oaishere in CrimsonDesert

[–]AncientDaedala 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that is a big part of why the game hasn't been hooking me.

Everywhere I go, it feels like every town is populated with fetch quests, bandits, and shops that sell basically the same items. I've been playing for about 20ish hours, so I am definitely giving the game a chance, but aside from a few moments sprinkled here and there, I have yet to find anything particularly memorable.

Seriously, what do people want? by OutlandishnessNo5678 in CrimsonDesert

[–]AncientDaedala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fundamental problem is this game is just doing too much for its own good.

The player who wants to freely roam around and solve puzzles is going to be annoyed by the boss encounters and difficulty spikes. The player who wants to enjoy the combat is going to be frustrated because they are fighting the controls just as much as the enemies. The player who wants to be immersed in a story is going to be disappointed that there isn't much of a story compared to other open world games, like Witcher 3, Horizon Zero Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima, and RDR2. The player who doesn't care for story is going to be annoyed that you can't skip cutscenes and you are forced to play as Kliff in the main story, despite there being no genuine reason to be him during the story moments.

On paper, it sounds like this game has a lot going for it, but for every positive, there is a negative. It lacks cohesion. The whole game is a mixed bag, and it really depends on how much you can ignore the downsides and what kind of player you are.

If it was discussed on stream, why not just link to the stream with the timestamp? No reason to post a video recorded by your phone.

But wow, that sounds rough. It would be weird to have TRG with just NCS and Chugga. They might as well just start a separate channel for that.
