Republican Party semi-protect

[edit]

Hi, as I raised on that talk page: I was the only IP editor active in the past several hundred edits. There’s no disruptive IP editing going on in the current RfC (which definitely has not been the case in the past) and I can’t account for the new system where an IP can change to a new temp ID at random times, but I’ve been very careful to link myself to those past edits to avoid the appearance of socking. As such, only one IP editor is getting restricted by this semi-protect change right now and that’s me.

Page protection is supposed to be used for ongoing issues, not necessarily hypothetical ones in the absence of any actual problems, no? This is also coming hot on the heels of one of the most prolific editors on that page declaring IP editors persona non grata, so it feels a bit of an inappropriate use of page protection. ~2026-21363-67 (talk) 05:42, 9 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! This wasn't targeted at you specifically, but I have evidence that an editor involved in the RfC had canvassed it on an outside website to skew the vote, which is why I went with semi-protection. Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 18:23, 9 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Removed the protection, my apologies again! Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 20:03, 9 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, if there’s an active issue with IPs I’m fine being iced out to prevent that from continuing, but it was just me this time.
Somewhat relatedly, would you be willing to look over the discussion around editors declaring IPs persona non grata being unwilling to discuss their own reverts with your admin hat on? I think we’re at trout-or-ArbCom right now and WP:OWN is being tossed around a fair bit in one of the most active editors pretty consistently. ~2026-21363-67 (talk) 12:39, 10 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I borked an SPI & needs halps pls

[edit]

Hi! I logged an SPI earlier and didn't notice that my phone decided to capitalise the master's username. I tried to fix it, but the entry is still linking to the wrong (capitalised) name within the page itself.

Is there any chance you could please take a look and see if you can fix it, or at least check whether it's in the right queue to be looked at (I think it is)? I'm not quite sure what I should do or who to ask, then I saw you were online & figured I may as well see if you could help!

If you have time to take a peek, it's at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/jwtmsqeh.

Thank you! Blue Sonnet (talk) 22:17, 15 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Blue-Sonnet! User accounts are automatically capitalized by default, and the software doesn't differentiate between usernames varying in the capitalization of the first letter, although their userpages can be set to display either. Turns out the actual username you're looking for is Just want to make some quick edits here, whose signature has their username's acronym instead of having it in full. I've moved the case page, it should be working now! Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 22:28, 15 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Second opinion

[edit]

Apologies for troubling you. I was wondering if you have time to provide a second opinion on an article that just started reviewing for GA through GARC. Gptzero and aidetector.com provide high degree of confidence of AI use and while this might be false positive, my reading also feels a bit off. However, I am not an experienced editor in detecting AI use. So before I raise this issue during the review report, I would be grateful if you also had a quick look. Any advice is also welcomed. Thank you. A.Cython(talk) 23:14, 22 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @A.Cython! This is in fact quite a long article, with an even longer history. From what I can see, a major rewrite was undertaken by a single editor in late March to early April, and that is what we should be considering. Have you tested the pre-rewrite version for comparison? Some edits are certainly odd in their time pattern, for example this addition of a whole paragraph with three entirely new sources in only 20 minutes, or this edit summary (alongside the previous ones) that don't appear to match the edit alone, and instead describe the entire editing session, but rewritten from scratch each time. Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 23:46, 22 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
No, I have not check the version before the renovation, but I will not to see whether it scores higher. This was an excellent idea. There are other issues with the particular article, but I wanted to be fair to the editor (in case of innocence), contributed a bit less than 1/3 enough to nominate, but not responsible for potential sins of the previous editors. A.Cython(talk) 00:28, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Good luck! Even beyond testing the old version on GPTZero/etc. as a baseline, it can be good to compare them to see what the rework focused on and if those parts match your suspicions. I've checked on XTools and the only other major contributor dates back far before the AI era, so I don't think any large chunks of AI-generated material have been added inbetween. Esculenta

[edit]

Hi Chaotic. I'm a fellow lichen project member who's really concerned with how you dealt with Esculenta. The first notification s/he (not sure which is appropriate, since they don't have a user page) received about potential issues was at 18:56 on April 15. Following that, they edited two articles, presumably to fix the issues referenced by Fermiboson at the AINB page. Less than 24 hours later, you blocked him/her completely for "failing to engage". That's pretty harsh! Judging by the response they gave to Fermiboson on their talk page, they clearly thought they'd dealt with the issues raised. And then, less than 5 hours after Fermiboson asked them to comment further on the AINB page, you blocked them. That's not a very reasonable time frame. I guess you're assuming that this editor isn't an adult with a proper day job! Gotta say, I'm not impressed. This was a very productive editor who did a lot of good work. It would have been nice if you'd given them a chance to actually engage. MeegsC (talk) 19:20, 27 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I understand that editors have different availabilities, and I wouldn't have faulted them for just being inactive. The reason for the block wasn't that they didn't respond after a set time, but that they continued article expansions without addressing concerns about their methods of expanding articles. The block is not a full block, but only from mainspace, and in fact encourages them to engage, and I am ready to lift it if they so did. Republican Party (United States) dispute

There's a large dispute regarding people jumping the gun on the RfC in Republican Party (United States) and editing the article without consensus. Check my work?

[edit]

Hi! I created a new maintenance template, {{Consider merging}}, that's similar to {{notability}} in some ways but specifically links to merge reason for most of its cases. Its supposed to fill in some of the desire found at TfD for a template that doesn't duplicate the old PAM system, but doesn't nominate them at AfD directly either. I'm pretty close to done I think, but since its my first time working on a new template like this I'd like someone to check my work before I remove the under construction tag. Would you be up for it? ScrubbedFalcon (talk) 16:50, 2 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot @ScrubbedFalcon, it looks pretty good! Small detail, CSS class names are separated by spaces, so ambox-Consider merging is interpreted as two class names instead of one. This only really matters if users want to make custom CSS for those boxes in particular, but something like ambox-consider_merging (on the model of Template:Very long) could work!
Besides that, it looks ready to go for me! Don't forget to create Category:Articles that may be suitable for merging (and the relevant subcategories) once you are done, there are a few category templates you can add for that purpose! Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 05:40, 3 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh I didn't think about the CSS! Thanks for taking a look at it! ScrubbedFalcon (talk) 07:35, 3 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

User refusing to be civil

[edit]

User talk:DannyCutterAnderson

This user is being uncivil towards me and reverting my helpful contributions to a draft they are working on which I have also taken an interest in. At one point even said "don't you dare remove this from the draft, or we're gonna have problems", which is an indication of an WP:EW mentality. What particularly concerns me is their most recent comment "how can I be civil?" after several warnings from others including myself. Don't want to take this to ANI as I am not sure if it's severe enough to warrant it. Plus, I could do without the drama so I'm not really willing to engage with this user unless they apologize. Gommeh (talk! sign!) 20:48, 4 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Seems to be a new editor who is a bit too protective of their draft, which can make for a rough learning experience. I'll drop them a comment. Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 06:26, 5 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah. Still though, the civility issues crossed the line for me, even if you're a new editor you should be nice to others. I appreciate the comment you gave them. Gommeh (talk! sign!) 13:27, 5 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Grep for a SPLIT

[edit]

I think you're the one who did the successful background work for an oversized article split. (archived discussion) Thank you very much for that work. Can you keep that technique in your back pocket for later? The '2000-current' article is a full half of the original behemoth, and growing. At 300,000 bytes+ and only at year 2026, I predict it will need further splitting (probably by decade) in the not too distant future.   ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 16:23, 5 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, I was already thinking about it when I saw the relative page sizes. 1900–1999 is also nearly 300,000 bytes, and I wouldn't be opposed to splitting it between 1900–1949 and 1950–1999, and splitting the 2000s by decades. Found ways to simplify the regex so that should be easier. Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 16:29, 5 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Wonderful. I'll make a note on both of those talk pages so it can be found in the future.   ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 16:41, 5 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Trying to replicate the Period fossil module

[edit]

Hello! Today I found your new period fossil module and wow... I was really impressed. I have tried to replicate it at Basque Wikipedia, but something is failing and I don't know what: eu:Modulu:Period fossil range. Can you take a look? The error message is quite generic for me. Thanks! Theklan (talk) 17:42, 12 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I'll look at it! Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 18:34, 12 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Solved it! I didn't need to change the naming of the templates (?) at the module! Theklan (talk) 18:38, 12 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot for adapting it, genuinely made my day! I think there's still a small bug, since eu:Txantiloi:Garai hasiera and other related templates use the Basque names, while eu:Txantiloi:Period fossil range/rangebar uses the English names (which can be an issue as that template generates the links). It might work more smoothly if everything was translated consistently? Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 18:48, 12 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for noting it. I'm currently translating those, but I was making a break for dinner. A couple of those are already available: eu:Txantiloi:Period_fossil_range/rangebar. I'm very happy with this, it's really impressive! Theklan (talk) 19:07, 12 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Nearly everything is working now. I had to change lot of translations that we had outdated in other modules, so it was quite a complex thing. The result is great, thanks for caring! Theklan (talk) 21:32, 12 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I do like the idea, although I really encourage you to test it at small scale as your next step! [edit]

Sorry to bother you but you’re the only editor I know who speaks French. On my talk page there’s a TA who left me two messages in French. I do not speak the language and from Google Translate it seemed to be just nonsense about a train and telephone or something. So, I was wondering, if you could look at it and see if it means anything. Thanks, Chorchapu (talk | edits) 12:31, 17 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
