Book of the Month: Crossing the Chasm — A great read for the AI Era Are you connecting with your market—or just talking at it? Lately, I’ve been talking with a lot of AI leaders—on my podcast, in business conversations, and with clients across industries—and one book keeps coming up again and again: Crossing the Chasm by Geoffrey Moore. I first read it 25 years ago when I started my internet company, and it’s still just as relevant today. The tools have changed, but the psychology of adoption hasn’t. This book is a blueprint for turning innovation into traction, and traction into trust. The Curve That Explains It All Every market follows this adoption curve: Innovators (2.5%) – Crave what’s new. They want to test, explore, and be first. Early Adopters (13.5%) – Visionaries who see what could be. They connect potential to impact. Early Majority (34%) – Pragmatists who want reliability, proof, and results. Late Majority (34%) – Skeptics who move when everyone else already has. Laggards (16%) – Resistant to change; they adopt last, if ever. Between Early Adopters and the Early Majority lies the ⚡Chasm—the gap where enthusiasm fades and skepticism rises. The AI Industry Needs Its Own B-Corp Moment 🤖⚖️ While initiatives like the Partnership on AI, Montreal Declaration for Responsible AI, and IEEE's algorithmic bias standards are laying important groundwork, we're still missing something crucial: a clear, actionable certification that users and businesses can easily understand, and actually trust. Think about it—when you see a B-Corp logo, you immediately know that company has been rigorously assessed on social and environmental impact. We need that same instant credibility for AI systems. The Current Landscape Falls Short ISO standards and NIST frameworks are excellent for technical teams, but they're largely invisible to end users. Meanwhile, "Responsible AI" has become corporate buzzword bingo—everyone claims it, few prove it. What Would an "AI B-Corp" Look Like? Here are some concrete, verifiable standards I'd propose: ✅ No training on user data by default – Users must explicitly opt-in, with clear understanding of what's being used ✅ Personal data anonymization from prompts – Strip identifying information before processing, with technical audits to verify (interestingly, some large Gen AI providers already do this, but few people know it) ✅ Algorithmic bias testing – Regular third-party audits across demographic groups, with public reporting ✅ Human oversight requirements – Critical decisions must have meaningful human review, not just rubber-stamping ✅ Explainability standards – AI systems must provide understandable reasoning for their decisions The Business Case is Clear Companies that proactively adopt rigorous and transparent standards will differentiate themselves.
