Dafür braucht es gesellschaftlichen Konsens. Zahle ich mehr für meinen Telekommunkation und meinen Strom, weil die Standorte des Betreibers gesichert sind?

A forum that brings together researchers, political leaders and businesses to debate what comes next, and what we need to do differently going forward. One could say: Similar to Davos, but less icy and more mediterranean-style. The agenda was packed and centered around the main themes: * Geopolitics: shifting alliances and Europe’s role in the global order * Growth: how to restart competitiveness - and finance the next wave of prosperity * Energy: affordability, security of supply and sustainability * AI & digital transformation: opportunity - and responsibility * Future of work: skills, transition and social cohesion One point was crystal clear: digital connectivity is now a critical pillar for competitiveness, resilience and sustainable growth - across Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. Investment frameworks, regulation and the role of critical infrastructure were central to the debate, and it was good to see mobile networks and tower infrastructure placed in a broader economic and policy context. I was glad to contribute to the panel “The Strategic Multiplier – Investing in Critical Tech Infrastructure for European Growth”, alongside representatives from the European Commission, Google and Netcompany. Eliza Gkritsi, Frederic Geraud de Lescazes, Ulrik Vestergaard Knudsen, Despina Spanou My main message: Europe’s biggest challenge is less about technology - and more about execution. If we want AI, industrial competitiveness and the green transition to succeed, we need reliable connectivity delivered consistently across borders. * Unlock private investment with sustained public commitment and predictable frameworks. * Prioritise energy access for telecom infrastructure - faster approvals and clearer prioritisation. * Continue the roll-out of 5G in non-connected parts of Europe and along the railways and highways to support travel and movement of goods. * Move to coherent EU-wide regulation to reduce fragmentation and speed up deployment. * Strengthen resilience (back up capacities!) and dual-use capabilities to support the strategic value of digital infrastructure. We were honored to have such discussions with a broad range of leaders – especially with Teresa Ribera from the EU commission stood out! None of this would have been possible without our fantastic Greek team. The preparation, the detail, the smooth execution - and the hospitality - were outstanding. Thank you all! It’s always been personal to me. I have had the honor of serving this industry for 30+ years. At its best, at its most purpose-driven, it is about basic connectivity for the unconnected, under-connected, and the disrupted. The most important discussion at MWC was “Skybound 5G: Drones, HAPS, Satellites and the Race to Connect the World” on the GSMA stage. Through every technology cycle, the purpose remains to expand access, to create opportunity. As Adel Al-Saleh and SES Satellites focus on the O3b, or the “other three billion.” Nearly 3.9B people, almost half the planet, still lack the connectivity needed to fully participate in a modern economy, access education and healthcare, or build resilient local businesses. Adel spoke about making connectivity seamless and integrated — not satellite vs. terrestrial, but networks working as one. Multi-orbit architecture no longer theory thanks to 5G. We are reshaping how we think about reach, resilience and partnerships to meet the world’s most demanding connectivity needs. When we have time to plan investments, economics drive capital deployment. We debate spectrum and ROI. But when decisions are no longer within our control, as Oleksandr Komarov described, connectivity becomes something else entirely. He spoke about networks in Ukraine that must keep running even when power is disrupted, infrastructure is damaged, and communities are displaced. In those moments, connectivity is not a service, it’s a basic need. Stephen Oh walked us through XM2’s evolution from pioneering drones for major film productions to extending network coverage for first responders. The same innovation that once captured stories on screen is now helping protect them on the ground. None of this happens without standards — without guardrails. Amina Boubendir, PhD highlighted how ongoing 3GPP work is formalizing the integration of satellite into 5G, moving NTN from experimental to standardized architecture and a trusted infrastructure. Sovereignty was not just a policy word this year. It was about ensuring nations can depend on the networks that connect their people. This was not a debate about terrestrial vs. NTN. It was about how sky and ground, networks and devices, must work seamlessly together so connectivity endures when people rely on it most. The race to connect the world is not about technology alone. What remains clear to me is this: connectivity is never just infrastructure. It is human. And in moments like these, we all carry that responsibility. #MWC26 #Multiorbit #SkytoGroundPartnerships

Worum geht es konkret? Der Berliner Senat gibt Berlin Partner den Auftrag, ein Defence-Tech-Ökosystem aufzubauen. Ziel: Akteure zusammenbringen, die bisher zu getrennt arbeiten. • Forschung • Start-ups • Industrie • Politik Im Fokus: Sicherheits- und Dual-Use-Innovationen. Ein paar Punkte zeigen, wie weit das schon ist: • Über 400 Unternehmen in der Hauptstadtregion arbeiten an Dual-Use-Technologien • 130 Unternehmen sind direkt in Sicherheits- und Verteidigungsindustrie aktiv • Eine Stabsstelle in der Senatskanzlei koordiniert Berlin künftig mit Bund und EU • Berlin Partner soll Ansiedlungen und Gründungen im Defence-Bereich aktiv fördern • Die enge Zusammenarbeit mit Brandenburg ist ausdrücklich Teil des Plans Die Logik dahinter ist klug. Berlin hat viele Bausteine schon vor Ort: – Bundesministerium der Verteidigung – Cyber Innovation Hub der Bundeswehr – starke Startup-Szene – exzellente Forschung Meine These: Defence-Innovation wird in Berlin jetzt als eigenes wirtschaftliches Zukunftsfeld verankert, nicht mehr nur als Fördertopf. Das ändert den Blick auf Dual-Use: Weg von „Nische für Spezialisten“. Hin zu „Treiber für industrielle Wertschöpfung in Europa“. Das Spannende für mich: Die Frage ist nicht, ob Defence-Tech in Deutschland wächst.
