Last week at Handelsblatt Energie-Gipfel 2026 in Berlin, one thing felt different: the conversation has clearly shifted from national energy debates to thinking and acting as Europe. A few take-aways that stuck with me: ⚡ Europe is aligning around electrification We won't explore new oil & gas resources and if want to be less dependent on imports, electrification isn’t optional. It’s foundational to European resilience. 🏭 Deindustrialisation is a real concern There’s growing urgency around keeping European industry competitive. That puts energy costs and cost-effective electrification front and centre of the debate. 🔄 More electrification means more flexibility The system we’re building needs to behave differently. Discussions ranged from adding backup gas capacity in Germany to the rapid acceleration of large-scale batteries, complemented by flexibility from industry and consumers. 🌍 Renewables: Europe is not leading (yet) The share of renewables in Europe is still around ~20%, compared to ~33% in countries like China, Korea and Japan. A sobering reminder that ambition alone isn’t enough: speed and execution matter. 🧠 Grids and digitisation remain the backbone Power grids are the critical enabler of the energy transition and accelerating it means accelerating digitisation just as much. Data, software and intelligence are no longer “nice to have”; they are system-critical. The encouraging part? There is momentum. And increasingly, a shared understanding that Europe’s energy future is something we need to design together: across borders, sectors and technologies. Now it’s about turning alignment into execution. Let’s keep pushing. ⚡🚀

Energy transition is global – and collaboration makes it stronger! 🌍⚡ Last week, Roland Hermes and I had the privilege of a personal exchange between BSES Rajdhani Power Limited & BSES Yamuna Power Limited and E.ON SE, hosted at Süwag in Frankfurt and in New Delhi. A big thank you to Abhishek Ranjan (CEO, BSES Rajdhani) and his team – Vishnu Srivastava, Saurabh Kumar, Maneesh Arora, and Devender Sharma – for the inspiring discussions and go and see site visits. Also, I extend my tanks to Sebastian Lührs, Edwin Schick and the team involved at Süwag. Here are some key takeaways that stuck with me: 🔋 Delhi’s energy transition is in full swing. Like many E.ON markets, the capital city faces the challenge of balancing rising electricity demand with growing renewable generation. Drivers include increased air conditioning usage and a rapidly expanding fleet of ~2,000 electric buses – with ambitious plans to scale further, potentially surpassing Hamburg in electric buses per inhabitant. ⚡ BSES Rajdhani Power Limited is leading with innovation. Let me share one example: As a private utility, they’re investing in grid capacity and deploying Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to enhance supply security. We visited a grid station with a 20 MW / 40 MWh BESS, inaugurated in April 2025 – one of many already in operation or planned. 💡 Technology enables progress – but people make it happen. The dedication and vision of Abhishek and his team are truly making a difference. At E.ON we follow a similar path as playmaker. Let’s keep building bridges and learning from each other. GERMANY:, Wind Power Energy Park Billions written off at EnBW: Who is liable for the energy disaster? By Holger Douglas Wednesday, 11 February 2026 How districts, savings banks and even the Protestant regional church in Baden-Württemberg will have to pay for a political energy adventure – and what role Finance Minister Bayaz plays in this. It caused quite a stir: EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG had to write off around 1.2 billion euros after withdrawing from two planned offshore wind farm megaprojects off the coast of Great Britain. The ‘Mona’ and ‘Morgan’ projects, planned jointly with BP, were considered prestigious ventures and were intended to prove that the energy transition could work even without nuclear power and coal. This marks a turning point in German energy policy. Around €1.2 billion had to be written off at the beginning of this year – triggered primarily by the failure of the UK to provide funding commitments. EnBW itself downplayed the situation, citing rising supply chain costs, lower electricity prices, higher interest rates and project risks. In essence, this means that offshore wind is not economically viable under market conditions. This is unlikely to be good news for the federal government. Just a few days ago, after the end of the 2026 North Sea Summit in Hamburg, Chancellor Merz announced that the decisions would keep ‘offshore energy affordable for consumers’. The laws of the market economy, however, paint a different picture. The subsidy swamp is drying up Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche is currently working on a law that would require wind turbine operators to contribute to the costs of grid expansion. There are also plans to stop paying for electricity if wind turbines have to be taken off the grid because the grids are already overloaded. The aim is clearly to slow down further expansion, particularly in low-wind areas such as south-west Germany. And this is precisely where another risk arises: wind farms that have already been planned and designed at great expense could become even more uneconomical and be scrapped. https://lnkd.in/eVxj3PFR

With the entry of the KfW acquiring a 25.1% stake in TenneT Germany, the German state is taking responsibilty for critical infrastructure and becomes a co-owner of a central piece of the country’s power grid.  High-performance power grids are part of our critical infrastructure and therefore a core security factor. They safeguard supply, enable the transformation of the energy system, and form the foundation for industrial competitiveness and economic growth. At a time when energy policy has become security, industrial and location policy, it is right for the state to assume responsibility here. TenneT Germany stands on a broadly supported and long-term secured equity base. In 2025, APG, GIC and Norges Bank Investment Management –three internationally renowned, long-term investors – committed to supporting the company’s investment agenda over the long term. The entry of KfW complements this structure and brings together private capital and public responsibility. This further strengthens the stability of the shareholder structure, enhances financing capacity in the capital markets, and sends a clear signal: grid expansion is a key project for security, industrial policy and competitiveness. Expanding the power grid is a generational task — and treating infrastructure as a strategic asset is essential for security of supply, competitiveness, and the future of Germany’s and Europe’s economic strength. #LightingTheWayAheadTogether

As even the near future gets less predictable every day, predicting production an consumption is subtantial for functioning energy markets and grid stability. This domain is predestined for the use of AI. Agents collecting data from a variety of sources and AI building intricate 24/48/72h-models are becoming reality at fast pace. What are the limitations? On September 17th, The Algerian-German Energy Partnership will host a conference under the theme: “Wind Power in Algeria: Paving the Way Towards a Smooth Energy Transition”, alongside a roundtable on Algeria’s renewable energy ambitions within the framework of HUSUM WIND 2025. A wonderful opportunity, a line of sight to timelines and some clear signals from the new German Governments that resonate with #GEVernovas purpose. - An new increase from 13GW to 20GW of dispatchable, reliable and H2 ready gas power to drive CO2 emissions down, stabilize the grid and to provide vital reserve power. - An new inclusion of Carbon Capture Solutions for power generation in the Carbon Management Strategy, as an additional technology option. These are changes that underpin the need to #Electrify & #Decarbonize in synchronicity. This is our purpose and mission. It has been great to work with a team of customers, authorities and investors towards this goal and to discuss how ambitious goals could be converted to realistic outcomes. Going forward, speed, alignment and progress are of essence. - Making sure the power plant security act, power plant strategy, core hydrogen roadmap, the roadmap for system stability and the carbon management strategy are in synchronicity. - The accompanying rules must be clear when it comes to investment planning and to the remuneration for power generation, holding power capacity available, providing grid stability and energy security. - Incentives need to be better defined for CO2 reduction as well as for the the use of CO2 neutral and CO2 free fuels. - The availability of hydrogen in large quantities, at the time and place where needed, requires substantiation. Investors, Utilities and OEMs need solid such grounds to work on for getting a supply chain ready. 🔋🌱 Big milestone for the energy transition: Vattenfall has just brought Germany’s largest Agri-PV park into operation! The new Tützpatz solar park in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is more than “just” a solar project – it’s a showcase for how renewable energy, farming and livestock can work hand in hand. Some highlights: 🔹 93 hectares of combined solar generation and agricultural use – about the size of 130 football fields 🔹 76 MWp of installed capacity, enough to power around 4,600 mobile sites of our partner Deutsche Telekom 🔹 Developed entirely without state subsidies – proving that innovative, market-driven solutions are possible I’m truly proud of the colleagues who made this project happen. Misery loves company. i just wish USA had more Doreen Rietentiets. Translation of her post: CEO of #Uniper is sitting in a FOCUS magazine interview and says: "The #energy system of an industrialized country like Germany cannot be stretched to its limits. In periods of low wind, when there is no wind and the sun isn't shining, we already feel the bottlenecks. ... By 2030, there is a threat of a gap of around 20 gigawatts in baseload power plants." Of course, he says that because he's making billions from climate-damaging gas. But first, it's not true that we need 20 GW, and second, who has Germany's energy security on their conscience? "Energy security" is being preached here by someone who has so far taken no discernible steps to implement a fundamental change in its business model away from fossil fuels. Instead, Uniper has furthered its enormous dependence on Russian gas and, even after the start of the Russian war of aggression, insisted on Gazprom as a reliable partner for gas supplies. Uniper recently signed long-term gas supply contracts with the next autocrat – Azerbaijan. More climate-damaging gas comes from Australia. These gas imports are in the context of environmental and human rights violations and cement the fossil fuel lock-in until the 2030s and 40s. Apart from that, Uniper was on the verge of insolvency in 2022 and was bailed out with approximately 35 billion euros of taxpayer money. I don't think they can be proud of that and now want to take on the role of energy transition explainer. The whole thing is a blatant step backwards for Germany. ****
