Pray for North Macedonia

Stepping foot into North Macedonia instantly transports you back in time, with its ancient architecture and medieval landmarks. Landlocked between Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Kosovo, and Albania, the nation is an important link between major trade routes. The capital city, Skopje, is known for its Ottoman Old Bazaar — one of the largest and oldest marketplaces in the Balkans. Although ethnically Albanian, Mother Teresa was born in Skopje and is one of the city’s most famous historical figures. Interestingly, North Macedonia is the only nation to gain independence from former Yugoslavia without any bloodshed. Independence was established in 1991 under the name “Macedonia,” later becoming “North Macedonia.” With a history as an ancient crossroads, it’s no surprise that North Macedonia’s population represents people from across the world — including ethnic Macedonians, Albanians, Turks, and more.

North Macedonia experiences a steady demographic decline due to low birth rates and high emigration rates. Many young graduates and skilled professionals relocate to Germany, Austria, and Slovenia in search of better wages, shrinking rural communities. Government corruption and a weak judicial system destroy public trust, further driving people away. Tensions also run deep between the Macedonian majority and the Albanian minority over political representation. Pushing for reform has been difficult; journalists reporting on government misconduct frequently face lawsuits, intimidation, and hostility from public officials.

North Macedonia is roughly 60 percent Christian (mostly Orthodox) and 35 percent Muslim. One of the largest cross structures in the world is the Millennium Cross on Vodno Mountain overlooking Skopje. Despite the country’s impressive religious résumé, many churches are emptying, and few people incorporate faith into their daily lives. Minority Christian denominations, including the 0.2 percent of evangelicals living there, face challenges with registration and acquiring a place to worship. However, there is an increasing focus on Church discipleship, which includes pastors’ prayer networks, pastoral mentoring, and citywide worship events. Small evangelical fellowships are being established in cities and smaller communities. Protestant and evangelical populations are growing. God is working in His Church!
