Genealogical Interests

Communication Preferences: I am interested in communicating with anyone who shares the same genealogical or historical interests.

Here is my family tree.

I've been researching my ancestors and their kin for many years. Some years ago I noticed African-American families with the same last names. I knew that my ancestors had enslaved others, so I became interested in these families, especially the Kirkseys. I have learned a lot in the course of this research. If you are a descendant of these families, I would be happy to try to answer any questions you might have. If you would like to manage the profiles of your family members please PM me.

I've been an active participant in WikiTree's Black Heritage Project for awhile now. Recently, I worked on profiles for soldiers involved in the Buffalo Soldier Tragedy of 1877 and their families. The story of their ordeal is fascinating.

Biography

I have been doing genealogy for over 40 years. My grandmother, Deola Mae Wenner Merriott, was an avid genealogist who did research the old fashioned way, by writing letters and visiting courthouses and cemeteries. When she passed away in the 1970s, she left me four thick binders of typewritten research. I caught the bug from her.

I've also had help along the way from other relatives. I believe accuracy is extremely important, and I enjoy collaborating with others.

Hey Randal, looking at Johnson Graves. His mother from the records on FamilySearch is Melissa Graves.

In the 1850 census, that would put us with these candidates in Pittsylvania Co.: James Graves - Female 1827, 1828, 1830, 1830, Frances Graves - Female 1831 Thomas Graves, Female 1825, 1833 Jeremiah White Graves - Female, 1827

Plus another 25 in Caswell County.

So we're probably looking Johnson being a slave descended from genealogy 169, 270, and their associated branch genealogies from the Graves Family Association. Keep us posted!

Hi Randall,

Isaac Bonine and Sarah (Sally) Merritt are my third g-grandparents. I have been searching for Isaac's parents since the 1980's. Find them and a huge generational hole will be filled. Isaac was married in January, 1826, in Blount Cty, TN. He is listed in a tax district in northern Roane Cty in 1831. He is recorded as paying a poll tax in the same district in 1833. After that he headed to MO and Morgan County. I have information on his MO years, but what I need, and hope to find is his parentage. I live about 40 minutes form Roane County and am doing research there, and in Blount County. Hope you and/or another "kin" have come across a lead.

Hi Tom, I don't know if you have looked into Y-DNA testing. Since you are a Bonine yourself, looking for the earlier Bonines, it makes sense for you to test if you haven't already. It tests the Y chromosome in depth only, passed from father to son. This won't tell you exactly who your Isaac Bonine's father is but it will identify other men with whom he definitely has a common paternal ancestor, and estimated date where they branch off. My brother Randall's testing matched him with another man of similar/same surname who is from a different line from Sally Merriott Bonine's father Thomas. y-DNA is matching much further back in time than you can hope for with cousin-type autosomal DNA. As more people test, we are hoping in future to see matches with Marriotts of earlier generations and related families. The database of Y-testers is expanding rapidly and becoming more refined with family trees. If you have the funds, I recommend a BigY-700 test here, and joining relevant surname and haplogroup projects. There will probably be a Father's Day sale coming up. If you want some help figuring out how to use the results, I am happy to help, feel free to message me. https://www.familytreedna.com/products/big-y

Hello Randall!

I’m conducting the 6-month check in for the US Black Heritage Project. Because we are growing so fast, it’s not always possible for me to see what everyone’s working on.

I’d love to hear what you’ve been working on and if you are still happy being a part of the Slavery Team. Members can change teams at any time. If you need something to work on, we now have a master task list here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:US_Black_Heritage_Project_Tasklist

We now have a project badge! Hooray! As soon as I hear back from you that you’d like to continue with the project, I will add the badge to your profile.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Emma

Randall: I know this has been a bone of contentions for years. I have a document, if you send me an email I will send it to you. It shows the pension for the Revolutionary War. I might have a couple of other documents but I will need to dig around for them. Regards Carmen

Randall, thank you for your work on Alice Warren Marriott. I tried for along time to work out her mother. Alice Powell needs serious work. I became ill and got tired of trying to work the technical aspects of this site. Your work is appreciated. Again Thank You.

Hi Randall,

I understand your frustration. It is nice to know that you have experience with genealogy and will be able to clean up some of these profiles. It actually sounds like you should join the Data Doctor's project. Their whole project is about cleaning profiles and you would fit in very nicely.

I have found several of my ancestor's profiles are in the same condition, and I find great satisfaction in sourcing them correctly.

Please ask if you have any questions as I am always happy to help!

Thanks for the note. However, right now I'm more interested in pruning some branches that don't belong and I'm finding it frustrating. Seems like folks came on to this site several years ago and imported a bunch of unsourced trees and now I have all these relatives that don't belong in my tree. I've been working my way through some, but my biggest frustration is with a Project Protected Profile that has apparently been a mess for years now and I'm having trouble figuring out who to contact to get it cleaned up, since I'm not allowed to disconnect relationships.

Though I'm new to this site, I'm not a novice at genealogy. It's discouraging to see how messed up some of these trees are.

Hi Randall,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.
