Genealogical Interests
Communication Preferences: I am interested in communicating with anyone who shares the same genealogical or historical interests.
Here is my family tree.
I've been researching my ancestors and their kin for many years. Some years ago I noticed African-American families with the same last names. I knew that my ancestors had enslaved others, so I became interested in these families, especially the Kirkseys. I have learned a lot in the course of this research. If you are a descendant of these families, I would be happy to try to answer any questions you might have. If you would like to manage the profiles of your family members please PM me.
I've been an active participant in WikiTree's Black Heritage Project for awhile now. Recently, I worked on profiles for soldiers involved in the Buffalo Soldier Tragedy of 1877 and their families. The story of their ordeal is fascinating.

Biography
I have been doing genealogy for over 40 years. My grandmother, Deola Mae Wenner Merriott, was an avid genealogist who did research the old fashioned way, by writing letters and visiting courthouses and cemeteries. When she passed away in the 1970s, she left me four thick binders of typewritten research. I caught the bug from her.
I've also had help along the way from other relatives. I believe accuracy is extremely important, and I enjoy collaborating with others.

In the 1850 census, that would put us with these candidates in Pittsylvania Co.: James Graves - Female 1827, 1828, 1830, 1830, Frances Graves - Female 1831 Thomas Graves, Female 1825, 1833 Jeremiah White Graves - Female, 1827
Plus another 25 in Caswell County.
So we're probably looking Johnson being a slave descended from genealogy 169, 270, and their associated branch genealogies from the Graves Family Association. Keep us posted!

Isaac Bonine and Sarah (Sally) Merritt are my third g-grandparents. I have been searching for Isaac's parents since the 1980's. Find them and a huge generational hole will be filled. Isaac was married in January, 1826, in Blount Cty, TN. He is listed in a tax district in northern Roane Cty in 1831. He is recorded as paying a poll tax in the same district in 1833. After that he headed to MO and Morgan County. I have information on his MO years, but what I need, and hope to find is his parentage. I live about 40 minutes form Roane County and am doing research there, and in Blount County. Hope you and/or another "kin" have come across a lead.

Thanks for your contributions in 2021! Emma
I’m conducting the 6-month check in for the US Black Heritage Project. Because we are growing so fast, it’s not always possible for me to see what everyone’s working on.
I’d love to hear what you’ve been working on and if you are still happy being a part of the Slavery Team. Members can change teams at any time. If you need something to work on, we now have a master task list here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:US_Black_Heritage_Project_Tasklist
We now have a project badge! Hooray! As soon as I hear back from you that you’d like to continue with the project, I will add the badge to your profile.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Emma

Welcome and Thank You for agreeing to participate in the US Black Heritage Project! Have you decided what you would like to work on yet? We have a number of sub-projects underway as well as a monthly connection challenge.
Randall: I know this has been a bone of contentions for years. I have a document, if you send me an email I will send it to you. It shows the pension for the Revolutionary War. I might have a couple of other documents but I will need to dig around for them. Regards Carmen
I understand your frustration. It is nice to know that you have experience with genealogy and will be able to clean up some of these profiles. It actually sounds like you should join the Data Doctor's project. Their whole project is about cleaning profiles and you would fit in very nicely.
I have found several of my ancestor's profiles are in the same condition, and I find great satisfaction in sourcing them correctly.
Please ask if you have any questions as I am always happy to help!

Thanks for joining us! I hope you're enjoying our site and our community. I just wanted to check in and see how things are going. Has the New Member How To Pages been helpful or has it left you with questions?
It's great to have you on board. Enjoy your time here, and good luck growing your branches. If you need help just click on my name and you will be transferred to my profile where you can post a message or send me a private message.

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.
Though I'm new to this site, I'm not a novice at genealogy. It's discouraging to see how messed up some of these trees are.

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!
Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.
Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.
Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.
