Another Genealogical Tool For African Americans: Ancestry Painting Of Your Genome
| 23AndMe wants your saliva swab |
As Booker Rising mentioned yesterday, 23AndMe is teaming up with Professor Henry Louis Gates, Dr. Rick Kittles (from PBS' "African American Lives" series) and Harvard University in order to test 10,000 African Americans and thus dramatically boost the diversity of their genomic database. Of course, there is already controversy. Some folks argue how to address fraud, as lily-white folks may try to secure a free test. As Razib Khan points out, African American genetic admixture is pretty clear, with Africans/pure blacks and European/lily whites sticking out like sore thumbs. Of course, there are also white folks complaining about black folks getting a free test. My response: (1) African-American genomic data is of higher value because far less is known about it; and (2) there's far more black resistance to scientific research due to history (e.g., the infamous Tuskegee Institute study). Thus, incentive offer (free test to learn about your ancestry and health genome) in order to secure data.
The health data sounds iffy to me, perhaps because it's only been done on white folks. While there will be some overlap with African-Americans, I'd take the health info. What I find interesting is the ancestry painting feature and Relative Finder service. With ancestry painting, they look at your 22 bi-parentlly inherited chromosome pairs (the 23rd one determines your gender) one segment at a time -- there are 1 million+ markers -- and determines for each stretch whether it was most likely inherited from Africa, Europe (Eurasia), or Asia.
Erica Baker, an African-American tech professional and blogger in California, has written about her experience (disclosure: Erica's employer is an investor in 23AndMe, but she paid for her test on her own). Above is her ancestry painting. Green is for African, blue is Eurasian (called only "European" here, even though it encompasses folks ranging from South Asians to Iraqis to Swedes), and orange is Asian/Native American (called only "Asian" here).

Peter Kirsanow: "Questions For Obama About Unemployment Benefits & Job Creation"
The conservative Republican member of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and former National Labor Relations Board member writes: "Yesterday, your press secretary, Jay Carney, asserted that extension of unemployment benefits has a 'direct, measurable impact on job creation,' creating up to a million new jobs and approximately 0.5 percent in economic growth. Do you maintain that if unemployment benefits are extended to more people, the economy will grow more? Even assuming that to be true, is there no point of diminishing returns?"
More: "The unemployment rate has been above 9 percent in 25 of the last 27 months with long-term payment of unemployment benefits during much of that period. Under Carney’s analysis, shouldn’t the economy be growing at a faster rate than 1.3 percent? Or do you contend that without extending unemployment benefits the GDP growth rate would only be 0.8 percent? If extending unemployment benefits has a direct, measurable impact on job creation, precisely how many jobs have been created as a result and in what industries? Also, if the extension of unemployment benefits has such a salutary effect on job creation, why is long-term unemployment at the highest rate since the Great Depression?"

S&P; Downgrades America's Credit: Bookerista Reaction, Part II
Deroy Murdock: "God Bless Standard & Poor's!"
The libertarian Republican pundit in New York argues that S&P did its patriotic duty: "Washington refuses to learn what millions of overextended Americans recognize daily: One cannot escape debt by tunneling ever deeper into it. As the economy cools afresh, the feds blissfully assume that the rest of the Earth will keep lending to Uncle Sam, even as he tragically resembles a junkie trembling for 'just one more fix' — to be purchased on account and settled....sometime. 'Promise.'"
Project 21: "The Obama Downgrade"
Assert members of the black conservative group, in a statement emailed to Booker Rising:
Cherylyn Harley LeBon, conservative: "One can hardly point to the tea party for the credit downgrade. The debt problem could have been addressed when it arose in the fall of 2010 when the liberals still had a majority in Congress. Instead, Obama took a pass -- as he has done with so many issues -- and lays blame with others."
Stacy Swimp, conservative and Tea Party activist in Michigan: "The credit downgrade is a consequence forced upon the American people by a president who has consistently demonstrated no regard to the fact the Constitution grants no right to Congress to subsidize private interests. Corporate welfare, record spending and contempt towards the Constitution from liberals created the condition which ultimately has led to the downgrade. Tea party activists have consistently and correctly condemned the aforementioned fiscal irresponsibility."

More About The Project
When you go to the website, it states that what you get as a participant: discover your ancestral origins (they break down African, European, and Asian ancestry) and helping to advance medical research that will aid African-American health. It also answers questions about the project, what health-related info you can expect to receive (i.e., they can't diagnose you but merely provide probabilities), and its privacy policy. Of course, there is the inevitable response that this is totally unlike the infamous Tuskegee experiment.
The project hopes to answer the following questions: (1) is the percentage of African ancestry correlated with disease risk for a broad range of diseases; (2) can we replicate discoveries from previous genome wide association study (GWAS) in African Americans (prostate cancer, type 2 diabetes, etc); (3) can we replicate findings from GWAS in European populations in this African American cohort; and (4) can we discover novel associations with disease in this cohort?

Flash Mobs: Bookerista Perspectives
John McWhorter: "How To Stop The Philly Flash Mobs? End The War On Drugs"
Asserts the moderate-conservative commentator in New York: "What makes these mob kids mad at white people is not something as distant and cerebral as 'institutional racism.' It's that most of their interactions with white people are edgy, starkly real, face-to-face conflicts with cops. If the cops had no reason to be in their neighborhoods, new generations of black teens would grow up with no reason to think of whites as an enemy. And the cops would have no reason to be in those neighborhoods if there were no war on drugs -- that is, yes, if today's Prohibition were discontinued and drugs were legalized. Not to mention that if drugs were legal, it would eliminate the black market that leads so many inner-city teens to sell them for a living. The lesson, therefore, is this: These disgusting flash mobs are one more reason to support ending the war on drugs."
Duane Brayboy: "I'm Not Feeling Some Blacks' Acceptance Of These Bell Curve Arguments For Flash Mob Behavior"
The conservative blogger in Georgia writes: "But I have been seeing something pop up pretty regularly on various Black-owned groups on Facebook and in cyberspace: Blacks who question the intelligence of other Blacks who commit crime. This is what I posted on Facebook last evening: 'What these kids are doing with these flash mobs is wrong. But I do not question their IQ. These are smart kids that need some strong guidance. I just debated a racist who thought the bell curve was accurate. What he was saying was no different than what I am hearing come from some of my own people.'"
More: "For the past 6 months or so, I have seen the intelligence question come up in some Black forums, but since the rise of these flash mobs it has been coming up a lot lately. I much rather hear someone say that they simply do not have a solution then to suggest that some Black folks simply do not have the capability to help themselves. What is sad is that there are white collar crimes that take place in this country pretty regularly and I have yet to hear any questions about the intelligence of these individuals. These kids really need our help, not a unsolicited psychoanalysis inspired by the same ideology we claim we despise."

Noooooo......
For those of you with Chicagoland ties, I highlight some bad news: The iconic Moo & Oink may be shutting down for good after 150 years. From CBS Chicago:"Their catchy commercials with the signature 'Moo & Oink' jingle have been grabbing shoppers for years. But now, Moo & Oink customers are questioning how long their favorite Chicago grocery store will last. The Austin Weekly News reported Wednesday that the store chain is suffering financially and could get put up for sale soon. A letter sent to the store’s creditors said that a trustee hopes to keep the stores running for some time, but that the plan is to liquidate assets as soon as possible."

National Slavery Museum Dying A Slow Death
The pet project of moderate Democratic politico Douglas Wilder is going up in flames. From AllGov.com: "It was supposed to attract two million visitors a year and feature a full-scale replica of a slave ship. But the one-of-a-kind, $100-million United States National Slavery Museum is little more than a fading dream, now 10 years on since former Virginia Governor L. Douglas Wilder unveiled plans to develop it."
More: "On a 38-acre parcel outside Fredericksburg, there was supposed to be a library, theater, classrooms, and galleries featuring images of slave family life and the Civil War. But the only development to take place is a small garden, now overgrown with weeds, which Wilder opened in 2007 to show progress was being made. Today, the museum-in-name-only owes more than $215,000 in property taxes and fees, and the city is planning to sell off the land at auction."
The article continues about the long-overdue project: "The museum’s director is gone, and so is its board. Wilder has insisted the project will happen, although his last public remarks were posted online in February. Since then he has been quiet on the subject."
Ryan Frazier To Look At Gunshot Sensors In Aurora
From The Denver Post, about the libertarian-conservative Republican and mayoral candidate in Colorado's third largest city: "Violence in northwest Aurora has the city exploring an expensive new system that could pinpoint the origin of a gunshot more accurately and more quickly than someone calling 911. On Tuesday, Councilman Ryan Frazier proposed working to cut gun violence by using both a public education plan and an audio-sensor system to detect gunshots and report them to police in an instant."
The article continues about the gun sensor system: "The city will research two audio-sensor systems. One, called ShotSpotter, uses triangulation technology to detect when and where a shot is fired. The system can differentiate between gunshots and other loud pops such as firecrackers and automobile backfires. Dispatchers are alerted, and police may also receive the information on their in-car laptops. Calls reporting shots fired now are made to 911 dispatchers, but they can sometimes be confusing and inaccurate. The area in Aurora that would be targeted for the system would be north of East Sixth Avenue and west of Interstate 225. ShotSpotter is being used by more than 50 law enforcement agencies across the country and can precisely pinpoint a gunshot to a back, front or side yard, for example."
More about Aurora: "Another provider, Safety Dynamics, uses microphones that can be moved around to different areas of a city. That system runs about $178,000 for the audio and about $290,500 when it's incorporated with cameras."

Larry Elder: "Mitt, Apologize For RomneyCare. Otherwise, Forget About Becoming The GOP Presidential Nominee"
Asserts the libertarian-conservative Republican commentator in California: "Obama brags that he based ObamaCare on RomneyCare. This does two things. First, assuming Romney wins the nomination, it deflates ObamaCare -- including its Massachusetts-like mandate -- as a campaign issue. Second, it forces Romney to either a) admit that RomneyCare 'works,' which would allow Obama to question why such a wonderful idea cannot serve as a role model for the other 49, or b) pronounce his signature issue as governor a failure, with Obama, of course, promising to do better with ObamaCare than the lousy job Romney did implementing the conceptually sound RomneyCare."
Mr. Elder outlines what Mr. Romney should've said in his speech awhile ago about RomneyCare: "'I promised that all those without health insurance would receive it. In fact, 100,000 still do not have health insurance. I promised that ER lines would become almost nonexistent. In fact, the lines are longer. I promised that premiums would go down. In fact, costs for employer-sponsored plans are rising faster than in any other state. Health care costs are spiraling upward, and people are waiting longer for treatment. Without cash infusion by the federal government -- which means taxpayers in the other 49 states pay for health care in my home state -- 'RomneyCare' would practically bankrupt Massachusetts. I was wrong. I've learned my lesson. I can speak to the dangers of ObamaCare unlike any other person in this race. I lived it, and I intend to do everything in my power to ensure it is never inflicted on any other state.'"

Mayor Michael Nutter: Bookerista Perspectives
Yesterday Philadelphia's liberal Democratic mayor was Booker Rising's Video Of The Day, after he took the podium at his Baptist church to slam the recent mob attacks. Bookeristas weigh in:
Lisa Fritsch: "This Crackdown Is Long Overdue"
The Texas conservative Republican radio host praises Mayor Nutter's early curfew policy, with fines and possible jail time for the parents: "The tough love of curfews and community action are a good start. And, while Nutter’s comments on the state of the culture and the violence is exactly what his community needed to hear, it was his candid and spiritual estimation of the situation at his church that gets to the root cause of the flash riots of late and the modern decline of morality in the black community. 'The Immaculate Conception of our Lord Jesus Christ took place a long time ago, and it didn’t happen here in Philadelphia. So every one of these kids has two parents who were around and participating at the time. They need to be around now.' Yes, an out of wedlock birthrate at more than 72% is the gaping wound. Herein lies the crux and the central point of the rising violence and the disturbing trend in black youths. Until we address the role of family and wedlock in our community and expect a return to family, we can count on these riots continuing and worsening. The only way to ensure this doesn’t happen is to stop the bleeding of children without parents."

Sheryl Swoopes: Bookerista Perspectives
As Booker Rising mentioned on Monday, WNBA star Sheryl Swoopes -- who came out as a lesbian in 2005 -- is now engaged to a man. Bookeristas weigh in on the issue:
Duane Brayboy: "Parsing Sheryl"
The conservative blogger in Georgia writes: "Titles don’t hide choices. A person that robs a house can call themselves a 'Personal property relocator' all day, but they are still a crook. A man that rescues a baby from a burning building is still a hero, even though he tells people that he is nothing more than an ordinary person. No matter how adamant Swoopes may be in not labeling herself as a 'lesbian' or 'bisexual', her actions suggest otherwise. I just wonder how her son is going to adjust from having a mom and dad at home, to two mommies and now back to a mom and dad again."
Mr. Grey Ghost: "Sheryl Swoopes Is Morally Bankrupt & Confused"
Asserts the conservative Democratic blogger in New York: "Of course, those who still believe the b____t about there being a 'gay gene' will argue that in [the] Swoopes case it somehow 'split' down the middle, causing Swoopes to really be bisexual. But that would ignore the fact that even Swoopes has said herself that being in a relationship with a woman for several years was a 'choice' she made and that she wasn't 'born gay' -- more reason for sane people around the world to understand and know that the main reason the gay movement uses the 'born this way' spiel is because that argument provides them with the tools they need to gain 'civil rights' -- in other words, by saying that God created you this way, naive idiots around the world will sympathize with you and want to afford you 'rights' based solely on un-Godly sexual behavior."
More: "As for Sheryl Swoopes now being engaged to a man, when there are so many good, Christian, single women out there yearning for good men, it's sad to see a man make a choice to be with a morally bankrupt, clearly confused woman like Swoopes -- but then so many men are turned on by 'bisexual' women that they have [no] problem seeking relationships with one. That said, my advise [sic] to any person seeking to leave the homosexual lifestyle is to take some time off from relationships with people altogether, renounce your past sins and seek a relationship with God first, after that the rest will be gravy."

LURITA DOAN OP-ED: Obama's War On The Self-Made Man
The conservative Republican, who was head of the General Services Administration during the George W. Bush administration, opines: "Last week, Obama reminded us that millions of Americans are now completely dependent upon various government subsidy programs, without which, he says, they could not survive. 48.5 million Americans are dependent upon the government for food stamps to feed themselves. Another 55 million Americans are dependent upon [S]ocial [S]ecurity. 21 million receive disability assistance subsidies. Still another 50.7 million need the government to provide their healthcare, with 60 million Americans on Medicaid. Over 5 million Americans need the government to provide direct financial support for housing. Another 19.5 million require tuition assistance from the government to be able to go to college, while yet another 700,000 needed assistance to buy a car through Obama’s Cash for Clunkers. According to Obama’s philosophy, even mundane tasks such as weatherproofing windows and doors was, apparently beyond the ability of Americans to accomplish without direct government assistance."
More: "Add up all the millions now grown dependent upon the expanding entitlement system and Americans are left with the sobering fact that nearly 50% of our entire population is now dependent upon the government for some kind of subsidy for their food, housing, education and healthcare. Instead of the idea of the self-made man, Obama tries to motivate Americans with a disturbing notion that government handouts, which until recently carried a negative stigma, are their right, and that entitlements should be showered upon anyone with almost any need. Instead of success being earned through hard work and playing by the rules, Obama seems to believe that the government should provide. So, it is not surprising that Obama has already concluded that there is nothing morally wrong with pandering to the 50% of the population now dependent upon Team Obama, while taking money and opportunity away from others."

The London Riots: Bookerista Perspectives, Part II
The Associated Press reports that British Prime Minister David Cameron recalled Parliament from its summer recess yesterday and nearly tripled the number of police on the streets of London in order to deal with the thugs who've taken over the streets in many communities. Bookeristas in both Britain and USA continue to weigh in on the issue:
Britain: Walaa Idris: "Where Are The Parents?"
Asks the Conservative Party activist and single mom in London: "Just as my parents taught me personal responsibility and guided me though the tangled maze of life – I am passing the baton to my girls and expect them to do the same."
More: "Watching events unfold and escalate these past three days – seeing those kids running around at all hours of the night until the early hours of the morning, causing millions of pounds worth of damages – one question comes to mind – where are the parents!?"
![]() |
| Mark Duggan |
The conservative blogger in Georgia zeroes in on the inquest into the guy's death that triggered the riots: "Mark Duggan did not shoot at police, says IPCC. While the finding do not in any way substantiate the violence and ignorance that has taken place on the streets of the UK where hundreds of buildings were burned and looted.........the news that Mark Duggan did not fire at the police greatly undercuts the credibility of the law enforcement and their choice to use deadly force. This has echoes of Amadou Diallo, the unarmed African immigrant in New York who was gunned down by the police. The ricocheting rounds from the police were assumed to be gunfire from Diallo, triggering more fire toward his way. In the case of Duggan - the policeman who was hit by a bullet and was saved from injury because the bullet hit his radio - appears to have been hit by a police bullet that ricocheted."
More: "I traditionally give deference to the police in the context of the dangerous task they have in engaging criminal suspects and the unknown threats that this entails. It seems that they should have been less aggressive in confronting him and instead secured the taxi cab and then extricated the occupants. They appeared to Shoot first and ask questions later'."

The Existence Of Adam And Eve
Samantha Pierce, a conservative Republican blogger in New York, responds to an NPR story about how some evangelical Christians are questioning the existence of the Genesis characters: "I've been pondering this story all day and I'm not really sure what to make of it. My first thoughts were, this is what happens when you take your eyes off of the prize. The central pillar of Christianity is the healing of the relationship between man and God through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ the son of God. Arguing about the literal interpretation of the Genesis account takes our eyes off of that world and life changing fact."
She continues her commentary: "My second thoughts were, Genesis isn't about the nitty gritty of how God created everything we know. That's what science is for, to the best of the abilities of limited human understanding. Genesis is about the fact that God did create us and why he created us."
More: "My third thoughts were, why does this insistence on a literal interpretation of the creation story in Genesis exist? Where did it come from? Whose bright idea was it to use this as a litmus test for whether one has genuine belief in God and a proper respect for God's authority? What's the real prevalence of this belief in the Christian community?"
Kenneth Durden: "Obama Is Lost & Afraid. What Now?"
The libertarian-conservative blogger writes about U.S. President Obama's speech on Monday about the S&P downgrading: "I expected to see him continue with the same tired, old rhetoric (I didn't do it. Don't blame me, fair share, corporate jet corporate jet corporate jet), but what disturbed me was seeing a man who looked confused and afraid. I could see it in his eyes. What heck am I going to do? Can they see how lost I am?"
He continues: "Economic conditions are bad and appear to be worsening. The Keynesian economic theory, in which he's been steeped and believes so much, isn't working. Trillions have been spent on stimulus and bailouts, yet nothing is happening. Unemployment is still unacceptably high. The stock market is chaotic. The entitlement system that supposedly saved the country is destroying it. He can't say it's all wrong. What now?"
More: "The people aren't buying the rhetoric. Hope and change aren't distracting them from their empty bank accounts. They aren't believing corporate jets are keeping them from finding jobs. 'Change you can believe in' has turned to disaster you experience. What now?"

8/9 OLD-SCHOOL SONG OF THE DAY: Manu Dibango, "Soul Makossa" (1972)
"Soul Makossa" is considered to be one of the first disco songs, although it certainly doesn't sound like traditional disco. The song peaked at #35 on the Billboard pop chart and #21 on the Billboard R&B chart in 1973.
"Soul Makossa" is best known for its Duala "ma-mako, ma-ma-sa, mako-mako ssa" tribal chant, which has been sampled and revised by a ton of artists. The most famous samplers include Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" (1982), A Tribe Called Quest's "Rhythm (Devoted To The Art Of Moving Butts)" (1990), The Fugees' "Cowboy" (1996), and Rihanna's "Don't Stop The Music" (2007). I hope ol' boy got/is getting paid by that long list of samplers.
If you're wondering what a makossa is, then click here.
Amy Holmes To Anchor Glenn Beck's New Network
From Mediaite, about the Zambian-American conservative commentator: "GBTV, media personality Glenn Beck’s live streaming video network, today announced former CNN analyst Amy Holmes is joining the team as a news anchor for The Blaze. Holmes, who previously co-hosted Talk Radio Network’s America’s Radio News in addition to contributing conservative viewpoints at CNN, will anchor segments during Beck’s 5 to 7 p.m. news program and will provide additional updates throughout the day. The new show will debut next month, on September 12th, and will feature a wide variety of contributors rounding out Beck’s delivery of the day’s news and opinion. The show will be shot live every week day at midtown Manhattan’s NEP Studios."
Ms. Holmes has released a statement. More from Mediaite: "Being a part of the launch of a major new venture is thrilling — especially one powered by the tremendous energy, creativity, and positive entrepreneurial spirit of Glenn Beck. The Blaze has assembled an impressive team of experienced editors and journalists who I look forward to working alongside to deliver thoughtful and compelling news coverage everyday on GBTV."
A Bookerista Responds
Constructive Feedback, a conservative blogger in Georgia, responds to liberal disapproval of the hire: "The news that Amy Holmes - the Black Conservative female who[se] previous assignment to the ill-fated BET show 'Lead Story' caused a stir among Black Progressive-Fundamentalists - is teaming with Glenn Beck on his new network is being greeted with the expected swipes from the usual suspects. (I choose to not link to them at this time.) It goes to show you that when they call for 'racial diversity' (or even gender diversity) on the air - they are really talking about a COMPOUND. Progressive + {Fill In The Blank} Diversity. For those who are most acerbic in their slanted propaganda efforts - they realize that the presence of individuals who don't loyally digest what they put out undercuts their agenda."
How Race Has Put Strauss-Kahn's Accuser On Trial
| Nafissatou Diallo |
She continues her commentary: "These facts and eyewitness testimony about Diallo's immediate state of mind are key to building a case against Kahn. Yet, the defense has responded that she is not credible, that she consorts with drug-traffickers, and that she lied about being raped on her asylum application. What they fail to mention is that Kahn has been accused of this type of thing before. French journalist Tristane Bannon alleges that when she interviewed him in 2003, that he attempted to rape her. She has filed charges against Kahn."
More from Ms. Nelson: "Here is the bottom line: The Manhattan DA is hedging, in my opinion, because of this woman's race and status. They don't want to go up against a French Statesman and international figure and be made to look foolish if they are 'wrong'. I wonder, if the victim were white, and from Manhattan, and a manager at the hotel who was attacked by Kahn, would that have made a difference? This is yet another example of how far we as women of color have to go when it comes to how we are viewed, and treated as victims of crimes. Particularly when those crimes are committed by wealthy or powerful men."
Samuel Gonzalez: "How Dumb Are Verizon Union Workers To Go On Strike?"
Asks the conservative Republican blogger in New York: "Pretty damn dumb if you asked me. 45,000 union workers for Verizon’s Wireline division think it’s a good idea during these tough economic times to go on strike because they don’t wanna contribute a dime towards their health care benefits. Union leaders think since Verizon is a multibillion [dollar] company, they should provide free health care for their members for life. It’s that kind of thinking that destroyed the U.S. car industry providing generous and hugely expensive benefits packages for their legacy employees into their retirement."
More: "The car industry went bankrupt because of it. But, Verizon union workers don’t care about that because they want what they want like spoiled children. Of 196,00[0] workers that work for Verizon, 135,000 are non-union. If I were running Verizon, that percentage would go up overnight when 45,000 pink slips are sent out in the mail. With millions of people out of work, there wouldn’t be a problem [to] find 45,000 replacements."

Maid Sues DSK Over NYC Hotel Encounter
From the Associated Press: "A hotel maid who accuses ex-International Monetary Fund boss Dominique Strauss-Kahn of sexual assault sued him Monday, seeking unspecified damages as a result of what she calls the 'violent and sadistic' attack in a room at the upscale Sofitel hotel. Lawyers for the maid, Guinean immigrant Nafissatou Diallo, wrote in the lawsuit that Strauss-Kahn 'intentionally, brutally and violently sexually assaulted Ms. Diallo and in the process humiliated, degraded, violated and robbed Ms. Diallo of her dignity as a woman.' The lawsuit says Strauss-Kahn injured her shoulder, bruised her vagina, tore her pantyhose and violently grabbed the back of her head during the attack."
The article continues: "The lawsuit, filed in state court in the Bronx, accuses Strauss-Kahn of acting like a common criminal afterward, fleeing the midtown Manhattan hotel so quickly that he left behind traces of his semen, along with bloody tissues. 'In his haste to flee the scene of a crime, he rushed out of the hotel with toothpaste smeared on the outside of his mouth and was looking over his shoulders,' the lawsuit said."
More: "Strauss-Kahn, widely seen as a potentially successful French presidential candidate before his May 14 arrest, was pulled off a plane and detained hours after Diallo reported she was attacked. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted rape and other crimes. He and his lawyers have called a series of interviews Diallo conducted in recent weeks 'an unseemly circus' designed to inflame public opinion."
