Real Midwest Engagement: Valerie & Aaron

Real Midwest Engagements -- October 22nd, 2010 -- 10:15 am

Clover and Bee Best of Midwest 2010

What separates the good from the great when it comes to engagement photos? Here at C&B, we have a little theory about this. One word: romance. Jessie Stevens of Simply Jessie Photography (and one of our guest columnists, of course!) just captures the most wonderful, incidental and emotional moments. The moments that just whisper ‘love.’ The ones you’ll look back on later and get genuinely wistful over. Aren’t these shots pure poetry?

Simply Jessie Photography

Talk about a sweet meet-up story! Valerie told us, “Aaron and I met on a plane (actually, boarding a plane!) from Chicago O’Hare to Washington, DC. We had the most amazing conversation about art, music, books, and just about everything, and it just went from there!”

Simply Jessie Photography

About wedding planning together Chicago-style, “We are both very design-oriented, and love both nature and the architectural elements of the Chicago skyline. Aaron designed all our invitations, programs, etc., and he’s incorporated the skyline details and Chicago landmarks as well as butterflies, to evoke the location of our wedding, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. Chicago was simply the perfect location for us, as I grew up in the city and Aaron’s family is from South Dakota.”

Simply Jessie Photography

“Everyone we’ve been working with has been so wonderful. Our caterer, Food for Thought, has been so accommodating, down to recreating my Oma (grandmother)’s special brownie recipe and serving our favorite party beverage, jello shots! Our florist, Siddhanta, at Roscoe Blooms, is creating a beautiful chuppah for us out of birch, using both my great-great-grandmother and sisters’ veils. We’re also huge live music fans, so we’re making mixes of ‘Songs We Love from Bands We’ve Seen Together’ to give to our guests as favors.”

Simply Jessie Photography

“For our engagement shoot, we thought it would be fun to incorporate the kites as a little reference to being in flight (plus, flying kites is just so fun!). We had such a blast running up the hill with our kites flying behind us. Jessie’s suggestion of shooting at Montrose Harbor was spot-on; she has such an amazing eye and feel for nature, and we put ourselves in her incredibly capable hands. I love that despite being in the middle of the city, we look like we’re in an far-off country field or forest.”

Simply Jessie Photography

Simply Jessie Photography

Just gorgeous! Absolutely adore the kites. So sweet. I love how so many modern weddings are designed around those meaningful details. Isn’t that what it’s all about really? Crafting the wedding that fits your life. Congratulations, Valerie & Aaron! Such beautiful plans in the works!

Sweet Find: Creative Candles

When it comes to event design, sometimes it’s the simple elements that make a table setting stand out. One of the Midwest’s finest local artisans, Kansas City’s Creative Candles, has been crafting all their tapers by hand in small batches for nearly fifty years. The results: nothing short of beautiful. Having lit the tables of the White House and the Waldorf Astoria, and been called a ’secret source’ by Martha Stewart herself, we think these candles are the perfect detail for warming up autumn and winter weddings with lovely light.

Pretty Patisserie: Four & Twenty Blackbirds

A little piece (or should we say slice) of the Midwest in Brooklyn, we’ve been hearing amazing things about the Four & Twenty Blackbirds pie shop owned by South Dakotan sisters Melissa and Emily Elsen. The fall from-scratch pie menu has such a wonderful twists on tradition: bourbon sweet potato, honeyed pumpkin, salted caramel apple. And, on top of the yum bakery finds, they fill custom orders for special occasions and even deliver. If you’re having an autumn wedding in NYC, we couldn’t imagine a more down-home addition to the sweets table!

Fashion Wise: Papo d'Anjo for Flowergirls

It’s no secret, Papo d’Anjo is simply one of our favorite designers for flowergirl and ring bearer fashion. Handsewn in their Portugal studio, the fall line is lovely as ever with Liberty florals, sweet gingham and classic tartan plaid satins, and the perfect velvet accents. I’ve always loved the idea of a solid wedding palette with the children’s fashion adding a splash of sophisticated pattern, especially for autumn and winter. Knee socks and a cape for the flowergirl? It’s straight out of Madeline’s Paris! Can’t help but be inspired by their catalog—timeless style on every page!

City in a Garden: The Green City Market

City in a Garden -- September 13th, 2010 -- 4:44 pm

Simply Jessie Photography

Happy Monday, friends! Have we got the most colorful, bountiful, wonderful guest post for you today! Jessie of the Chicago wedding studio, Simply Jessie Photography, sent us this lovely write-up of her latest field trip to the Green City Market. It’s the ultimate farmers’ market eye candy and Midwest inspiration. The wedding possibilities are everywhere—color, fresh foods and flowers. You can’t help but think about palette, menu planning and, of course, bouquets!

Simply Jessie Photography

As summer is winding down and the air is becoming cooler and crisp, our Midwest summer seems to be going out in full display—amazing sunshine, blue skies and Chicagoans everywhere trying to soak up these last few days of summer. I’ve had the serious urge to drop everything and get out in the great outdoors. Spontaneous midday stroll? I think I will. The changing of seasons is in the air.

Simply Jessie Photography

My other impulse? The weekend farmers’ market. The Green City Market is a Chicago summer must. It’s actually a year-round farmers’ market that promotes local farmers and chefs to the public. From May to October, you can find sellers outdoors in the lovely neighborhood of Lincoln Park every Wednesday and Saturday. The rest of the year, the goods are brought indoors. On any given market day you’ll find cooking demos and live music filing the air. There’s so much to take in: a rainbow of colorful fruits and veggies.

Simply Jessie Photography

Really, it’s incredible what the market has to offer. Herbs in pots, honey, fresh farm eggs, plums, raspberries, blueberries, piles of fresh corn and, of course, my favorite, the cut flowers. Among the stalls, there were several flower growers present and I kept finding myself wandering back for more. The luscious scent of lavender greeted me along with cheerful yellow sunflowers. The magenta celosia and fragrant eucalyptus filled bucket upon bucket. Bliss! This weekend, what did I leave with? Ten different kinds of tomatoes and an armful of pink zinnias for my kitchen table.

Simply Jessie Photography

If you’re thinking about unique floral designs for you upcoming day, these local markets are an amazing resource. You can get amazing deals if you are willing to go with locally grown, in-season blooms. For instance, this past May, one of my brides used the big, beautiful, paper-petaled peonies for her wedding–gorgeous, right? And a great budget choice: $1 per stem from a local Chicago farmer’s market. They were unbelievably gorgeous, a great eco choice and the funds supported a Midwestern farmer. What’s not to love about that?

Simply Jessie Photography

Are you planning a farmers’ market-inspired wedding? We would love to hear your design and do-it-yourself ideas!

Real Illinois Wedding: Aneesha & Kirk (Part 2)

Real Midwest Weddings -- September 9th, 2010 -- 3:30 pm

More from Aneesha & Kirk’s glamourous Illinois wedding…just adore the Hotel Père Marquette as a venue! (In case you missed it, find Part 1 here!)

Cathy and David Photographers

“Our color palette was teal, fresh green, and black and white damask. We were inspired by the beautiful chandeliers at the Père Marquette and carried them over to our invitations, wedding programs, table numbers and cards, and thank yous. We wanted the decor to be fresh with a vintage, modern feel. The ballrooms and decor at the Père Marquette had a classic old world feel, and we loved the idea of juxtaposing that with something fresh and modern.”

Cathy and David Photographers

“Beth Maxwell of Save the Date from East Peoria was our decorator/designer/planner and day of coordinator. Beth was such a huge help and really turned our ideas into reality. She instantly picked up on our design aesthetic and ran with it. We absolutely loved the way the ceremony and reception sites turned out, better than we ever could have imagined. She was also very conscious of our budget and designed so that we could use our arrangements, etc. during the ceremony and the reception. She really went above and beyond. She really cared about making our day special and beautiful.”

“We chose the Hotel Père Marquette because of their beautiful ballrooms. I remember walking into the Cotillion Ballroom with its arches, chandeliers, and old world charm, and thinking ‘this is it!’ Everyone seemed to enjoy the food, and the staff at the Père Marquette was professional, courteous and accommodating. The ballrooms looked so beautiful and romantic the day of, especially with the addition of the flowers and decor. The contrast of the modern, clean decor was really neat with the classic charm of the chandeliers that make the Père Marquette such a great venue.”

Cathy and David Photographers

Liz Carver Designs created all of our wedding paper goods including our invitations, thanks yous, etc. We didn’t give Andrea and Liz much time, but they still managed to design gorgeous pieces. Liz designed invitations, programs, table numbers, place cards, and our thank you cards. She really captured the vintage-modern feel we wanted, with the slightly Gothic chandelier silhouette and damask pattern, lightened by the green and teal color palette.”

Cathy and David Photographers

“Bob Monier of Monier’s in Peoria was the florist. The flowers were perfect on the wedding day and Bob was able to get us exactly what we wanted. Bob recommended flowers that were in season such as white roses, peonies, ranunculus, and huge hydrangea and had great recommendations for the boutonnieres. We requested the floral color palette to be primarily white and green, to keep it modern and fresh, and it went beautifully with the teal and the damask that Beth brought in with the rest of the decor. The flower arrangements were so lovely that we even used them for a brunch the day after the wedding!”

Trefzger’s Bakery made our cake. I had seen a cake in a different color palette that had bracelet-like details and colored fondant circles strewn all over the cake. We took in a picture to the bakery and they were able to recreate our color palette perfectly. Most importantly, the cake was delicious, with strawberry butter cream frosting layered between white cake.”

Cathy and David Photographers

“The other piece of the day that was important to us was handing out LiveStrong bracelets as a gift to our guests. We had made a contribution to the LiveStrong Foundation instead of opting for the traditional wedding favors. My mom was able to beat breast cancer and one of Kirk’s best friends lost his father to cancer, so we felt good knowing that the contribution was going to such a good cause that was near to our hearts. It means so much to us to see our friends and family still wearing the bracelets around to this day.”

“We will never forget how happy everyone was and how much fun everyone seemed to have. Kirk’s friend, Brian, repeatedly dragging our moms onto the dance floor. Kirk’s mom had just told Kirk not to do any ‘crazy’ dance moves during their mother-son dance. However, a few minutes later, Brian was on the dance floor twirling her around. Kirk’s little cousin, our ring bearer, also put on a dancing clinic when the music started at the reception. It was especially memorable at the end of the night when everyone got onto the dance floor and sang and danced to “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey, a personal fave of ours!”

Cathy and David Photographers

Aneesha’s had great planning advice for us: “Keep everything in perspective and the true reason that the day is special, so the details don’t drive you crazy. Hire vendors that you can trust. Get to know them and show them your vision. Our day-of coordinator was crucial. It really took stress of the two of us and our families so that we could really enjoy the day. Make the day your own. If you want, like me, to use an Elvis song for your processional, do it! Last, but definitely not least, take the time to look around at your ceremony and reception, at all the family and friends that surround you, and realize they are there for you! It is the most wonderful, overwhelming feeling. You can’t help but feel so lucky, so loved, and incredibly thankful.”

Congratulations, Aneesha & Kirk! Such a wonderful wedding and such sweet people! Wishing you all the best. Cheers to Cathy & David Photographers for sharing the great photographs with us—thanks again, friends!

Real Illinois Wedding: Aneesha & Kirk (Part 1)

Real Midwest Weddings -- September 8th, 2010 -- 3:30 pm

Peoria is really a beautiful little city. When we saw Aneesha & Kirk’s high style wedding from our friends at Cathy and David Photographers, we were in love. Ballroom glamour, voluminous white and orchid green florals, and the bride’s shoes…a Midwest wedding that is simply to die for! And it’s the meaning behind all the design choices that won us over so completely—we admit, there were tears! Read on for all the sweet stories—love this wedding!

Cathy and David Photographers

“Our wedding date was Saturday, June 19th. It was a very hot, sunny day in downtown Peoria, Illinois. My bridesmaids, our moms and I started getting ready mid-morning. My bridesmaids were kind enough to get me a wedding day cup of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee before the preparations—my favorite! So sweet and much needed! Now, while we were busy getting ready, Kirk and his groomsmen didn’t get started until 30 minutes before the wedding. That is, except for Roger, his groomsman, who came down to hang out before the wedding fully dressed in his tux hours before the ceremony. We still laugh about it!”

“Our wedding was held at the historic Hotel Père Marquette in downtown Peoria. We chose the Père Marquette for its lovely ballrooms with their classic arches, grand chandeliers, and old world charm. The spaces are truly beautiful. Our ceremony began at 4 pm and lasted for about an hour. We got on a party bus, (yes, a party bus!) with our entire bridal party and immediate families and took photos around downtown Peoria, and on the Bradley University campus, where we met our junior year of college. The entire bridal party stuck out the heat without one complaint—wonderful friends! We took the majority of our photos outdoors after the ceremony while our guests enjoyed a cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at the Père Marquette. We returned to start the reception around 7 pm. There was dinner, toasts, and lots of dancing, keeping the party going until well past midnight. We were determined to enjoy our day from start to finish! All in all, due to our fabulous vendors, the day went according to schedule. We couldn’t have asked for better!”

Cathy and David Photographers

“I absolutely loved my dress by Justin Alexander. It was pure silk, with touches of beading in all the right places. The dress initially didn’t have any embellishment on the bottom, but the bridal salon was able to order more of the embellishment and add some more to the bottom and train of the dress. I had always thought that I would have had a full skirted dress, but absolutely loved the trumpet silhouette once I tried it on.”

“Another special piece was a beautiful ring my mother gave me as my ’something blue’ to wear on the wedding day. It’s my birthstone, surrounded by chocolate diamonds. I often wear my wedding/engagement rings on my left hand, and the ring my mother gave me ring on my right. My wedding ring is for my life with Kirk to come, and the ring on my right is to always remind me of my family, and where I came from.”

Cathy and David Photographers

“I’m a shoe girl, so I went with these gorgeous shoes from Badgley Mischka that look like they were adorned with rose petals. I was also able to find a lovely clutch with a petal-like feel. Tania from Custom Hair Lounge drove down from Chicago to do my hair and makeup, as well as my bridesmaids’ hair. She’s my regular stylist in Chicago, as well as Kirk’s, so we were so happy that she could come down for the wedding. She did a lovely job on my hair and makeup, I still felt like ‘me,’ just kicked up a notch, and I loved the way she styled my bridesmaids’ hair. Tania also surprised Kirk by giving him a quick haircut before the wedding—she mentioned it’s a tradition of hers, to ensure the groom is looking his best on the big day.”

Cathy and David Photographers

“My bridesmaids vary in height and skin color, and we wanted to choose a dress that they all felt beautiful in. The jewel-toned hue from Alfred Angelo looked gorgeous on everyone, along with the simple detailing at the bust and floor length skirt. The groom and groomsmen wore Joseph Abboud tuxedos from Formally Modern in the Chicago area. The staff at Formally Modern was wonderful to work with. We were really impressed by their quality, fit, and service.”

“Our officiant was Rhonda Washer, and she was great to work with. She really got to know us as a couple and helped us personalize our ceremony. She made our ceremony very spiritual and inclusive. The River City String Quartet performed at the ceremony. They were kind enough to play classical as well as more modern songs such as ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’ when I walked down the aisle and ‘Beautiful Day’ as we walked out after the ceremony. They were even able to perform a Sigur-Ros song called ‘Hoppippolla,’ which isn’t very well known. The quartet added such emotion to the ceremony and the day. I’m really glad we went with them for our ceremony. When I walked down the aisle toward Kirk, the music filling the space and all the family and friends so happy for us, it was overwhelming. It was so meaningful to have both of my parents walk me down the aisle. It was a moment I will never forget.”

Cathy and David Photographers

“I came across Cathy and David when I was looking for wedding photographers in Chicago, and saw photos on their blog. I fell in love with their candid style. They captured everything, from the smallest details to beautiful, emotional moments. I spoke with them many times leading up to the wedding, and even though I met them for the first time on our wedding day, I wasn’t the least bit nervous around them. They made me feel so comfortable, and, on the day of, they were absolutely fantastic. They really seemed to capture the moments as they occurred in real life. They have a way of seeing the beauty in places most people would think of as ordinary, such as the large dock they photographed our bridal party on, and bring out that beauty in their photos. We are thrilled with the way the photos look, and, on top of it, the two of them are awesome to work with.”

More from Aneesha & Kirk’s gorgeous Peoria day to come! The lovely petal theme continues…sigh! Isn’t this what weddings are all about? Beautiful!

Real Minnesota Wedding: Jennifer & Adam (Part 2)

Real Midwest Weddings -- August 18th, 2010 -- 9:37 pm

Pure sunshine! More from Jennifer & Adam’s delightful Minneapolis wedding…simply in love with the hand-painted photobooth! (In case you missed it, find Part 1 here!)

Perspective Studio

Perspective Studio

“We wanted a vintage feel, so we used a yellow and gray color palette. We took a lot of inspiration from old postcards from the early 1900s. Our theme was celebration and laughter. We didn’t want anything too formal because it just didn’t feel like us. No tuxedos, no formal wedding party, rather, a ‘wedding gang!’ We also surprised our guests by greeting them when they arrived. We didn’t want to be hidden away while our friends were starting the party so we joined them!”

Perspective Studio

“For dessert, we offered vanilla cupcakes with butter-cream icing from CUPCAKE in Minneapolis. They were SO delicious! Our wooden Bride and Groom cake toppers
were designed by goosegrease on Etsy.”

“We created the table number cards from vintage Minnesota post cards. We hand cut number stamps and I stamped the back of the post cards. We had to show our out of town guests a good time so Adam designed a map of Minneapolis with all of our favorite haunts, which we included in our welcome bags for our hotel guests. I also wanted to add a personal touch to the wedding so I painted a 5′ x 7′ mural to use as a photo backdrop.”

Perspective Studio

“We recently moved to Minneapolis from Brooklyn, NY so we really wanted to show off our new city to all of our east coast friends. It was important for us to show them what a great city this is, to help them understand why we made the move. Minneapolis really came through! We now have friends asking us to ship packages of Minnesota snacks (like Nut Goodie Bars and granola from French Meadow Bakery) to them in New York! A few have already made plans to come back to visit (in the summer only!).”

Perspective Studio

“We knew the night was going well when a friend of my dad’s started a conga line in the middle of dinner—not really the kind of dancing we had in mind but it really got the party going! Adam and I didn’t want to do a ‘first dance’ so we asked the DJ to invite everyone to join us on the dance floor. I expected a few close friends and family to accept the invitation but almost everyone joined in—the dance floor couldn’t hold everyone so people were dancing all over the dinning room. It was a beautiful sight!”

Perspective Studio

When we asked Jennifer about advice, she told us, “There are so many great ideas to be found in magazines and blogs, that it’s easy to see yourself having many different kinds of weddings! But the best advice we can give is don’t do anything because ‘that’s just what you have to do.’ Relax, have fun planning, and don’t listen to anyone but yourselves! It’s your day and it’s probably the biggest party you’ll ever throw so just have fun!”

Perspective Studio

Just brilliant! Everything about wedding planning should be a blast, right? Congratulations, Jennifer & Adam—here’s to all the happiness ahead! Many thanks, too, to Kate McGough of Perspective Studio for sharing her lovely photographs with us!

Real Minnesota Wedding: Jennifer & Adam (Part 1)

Real Midwest Weddings -- August 17th, 2010 -- 8:43 pm

Minneapolis is an amazing place to get married—the artisan possibilities are simply endless! Today’s real wedding is truly a Clover & Bee favorite. Combining this classic downtown venue with all of wedding designer Allison Geiger’s perfect vintage details made for a simply picture-perfect party. Wait until you see these shots from Kate McGough of Perspective Studio—it was love at first sight! All the lush yellow and pink florals, bright blue summer skies, every elegant handmade detail…pure delight!

Perspective Studio

“Adam and I were married on a hot summer day—July 3, 2010 in Minneapolis, MN. Both the ceremony and reception were held at the Gale Mansion, a beautiful South Minneapolis mansion built in 1912. We loved that the space was full of history, elegant, right in the heart of the city and even close to our house.”

Perspective Studio

“We tried to keep the day’s schedule simple. We really wanted to just relax and enjoy the day—something everyone told us would be difficult to do! We showed up at the Gale Mansion for a quick run-through at noon. We got dressed at the Gale for pictures at 2 p.m. and we were ready to greet our guests as they arrived at 4 p.m. The ceremony took about 15 minutes and the crowd was begging for ‘one more song!’ at 11 p.m. when we wrapped up the evening.”

Perspective Studio

“Luke Geiger of Right on Canvas designed our invitations and RSVP cards. We wanted the look of the invitation to be inspired by vintage Minneapolis post cards, and Luke nailed it!”

Perspective Studio

“Adam’s suit was from JCrew. His yellow checkered tie was purchased from designer J. Barton Strawn on Etsy. My wedding dress was purchased from Saja—an amazing boutique in NYC. They were so helpful and Yoo Lee’s designs were just want I wanted—simple and elegant. Local hair stylist, Lacey D’Apice, is amazing, and did an incredible job styling my hair! She created a natural and elegant style that worked beautifully with my dress, and most importantly I ‘looked and felt like myself’ on my wedding day.”

Perspective Studio

“We love the spirit and sound of bluegrass music so we hired The High 48s, a bluegrass band from Minneapolis, to play during our ceremony and cocktail hour. They really set the tone for the whole day: laid-back fun. And the crowd loved them! They even learned a few special requests for us.”

Perspective Studio

“Our photographer Kate McGough of Perspective Studio was great! She was exactly what we wanted in a photographer—personable and professional. She was able
to grab great shots of all the important moments, yet at the same time, we hardly knew she was there!”

Perspective Studio

“There were so many wonderful moments that it’s hard to pick just a few to mention! One of the most memorable moments was when Adam and I walked down the aisle together. The High 48s learned an instrumental version of Bob Dylan’s ‘Buckets of Rain’ for us and played it as our wedding gang and Adam and I entered. As we turned the corner and made our way down the pathway, our guests started cheering and clapping—our hopes of laughter and celebration realized!”

Perspective Studio

“We couldn’t have done it without Allison Geiger of Alilu Studios in Willmar, MN. We are very fortunate to have a wedding designer/florist/planner in the family—especially one we would have wanted to hire anyway! Allison guided us through the whole process; she made sure we were doing what we needed to do when we needed to do it. Allison had us come to her studio and we LOVED everything she had to show us. She really made the whole event feel like us. Allison used vintage bottles as flower vases, vintage juice glasses for votive candles, and old canning jars filled with yellow candies and sparklers. It was the 4th of July weekend after all so we went with sparklers as our ‘favor.’”
