Ohio McDonald's employees get voting instructions with their paychecks
If you work for this Canton, Ohio McDonald's franchise, you'd better be voting Republican if you know what's good for you. Via ThinkProgress: Along with their recent paychecks, employees received a pamphlet from their employer on company letter head that stated as the election season is here, we wanted you to know which candidates will help our business grow in the future. While pointing out that the vote is the employees personal decision, the pamphlet explicitly states, if the right people are elected we will be able to continue with raises and benefits at or above our present levels. If others are elected we will not: The "right people" are John Kasich, Rob Portman, and Jim Renacci for this franchisee. There's only one small problem with that handbill: It's illegal for employers in Ohio to include anything that will influence employees' electoral decisions with paychecks. There's a reason for that, of course. Employees who depend on the meager income they earn fro

The New Face of the G.O.P.? Grizzled Veterans
58 minutes ago · WASHINGTON Christine ODonnell, the Tea Party favorite and Republican Senate nominee from Delaware, is trailing badly in the polls, but her every utterance seems to win national attention. Meanwhile, John Hoeven, the three-term governor of North Dakota, remains largely unknown even though he is virtually certain to win a Senate seat next week not to mention that he was recently named a finalist for the American Mustache Institutes Mustached American of the Year award. Insurgent challengers

Thousands expected at Stewart-Colbert rally in DC
1 hour ago · WASHINGTON Comedians Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are appealing to thousands to rally with them in the nation's capital Saturday for a return to "sanity." Their fans just aren't certain what to expect. Organizers insist the "Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear" on the National Mall isn't about politics. Still, that hasn't dampened the hopes of supporters and advocacy groups seeking to rekindle some of the voter enthusiasm for Democrats seen in 2008, particularly among young adults.

Karzai demands investigation into NATO-led drug bust in Afghanistan
1 hour ago · KABUL--The inclusion of a small number of Russian anti-narcotics agents in a large drug bust has touched a raw nerve in the Afghan government, prompting President Hamid Karzai to condemn NATO for the operation and demand an investigation. The seizure of $55.9 million worth of heroin --more than 2,000 lbs -- and the discovery of four clandestine drug-producing labs in Nangarhar province of Eastern Afghanistan was touted by U.S. officials as a major success and a sign of international cooperat

President Obama says troubled by comments of top Republicans
2 hours ago · President Barack Obama on Saturday chided the two top Republicans in Congress, challenging his rivals to make a fresh start and build a bipartisan effort to boost growth after next week's election. Speaking three days before a midterm congressional election in which his Democrats are expected to suffer heavy losses, Obama said lawmakers had a "duty" to seek common ground. "That's why I found the recent comments by the top two Republicans in Congress so troubling," Obama said in his weekly

Cargo plane bomb plot: David Cameron not informed of terror threat for 16 hours

Dubai cops: Bomb plot was a 'professional' job with 'hallmarks' of al-Qaida
5 hours ago · A parcel bomb found on a cargo flight from Yemen to the United States was put together in a "professional" way and the plot bore all the hallmarks of al-Qaida, Dubai police said Saturday. The parcel, which was intercepted in Dubai Friday, contained explosive pentaerythritol trinitrate (PETN) in a printer and cartridge, police said. PETN is the material used in a failed plot to bomb an airline over the U.S. in December 2009. "The parcel was prepared in a professional way where a close

Clinton says US has a stake in Asian security
7 hours ago · Putting China on notice, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday said the United States has a key stake in increasingly tense territorial disputes between Beijing and its neighbors, as she assured nervous East Asian nations that the U.S. will remain a major power in the Asia-Pacific. Oct 29 · Occasionally I play tennis on weekends with a small group of men who are predominantly Republicans and who like to engage in Democrat bashing between games. One recent comment which most of us have heard repeated ad nauseum that sticks in my mind is that President Obama is the most socialistic president weve ever had. The man who said that is a physician and is undoubtedly at least reasonably intelligent. So why would he (or anyone else) say such an ignorant and stupid thing? I be

Oct 29 · Chicago is one of the larger cities in which the mayor has control of the school system. Also with mayoral control are New York, Boston, and Cleveland..among others. It has gone nationwide as a goal now with Arne Duncan as Secretary of Education. An education blogger pointed out that we could learn a lot from seeing those with whom Rahm Emanuel has been meeting as he starts his campaign. If Rahm Emanuel were to become Chicago's next mayor, expect more of the same--more school clo

Oct 29 · So I guess, they knew even back then exactly how the electorate would react due to their insightful "political crystal ball"? OR did they, the media, steer voters exactly where they wanted voters to be by Nov 2010? See here the running polls from month to month (press prior month or next month to compare the stats) Ever since the Health Care Debate, Obama and Democrats have been getting super lousy press from our media, and it has gotten progressively worse as time has

Oct 29 · It's that time of year again... the time when we pre-empt our usual Friday Talking Points column here and instead gather 'round the virtual campfire and shove a metaphorical flashlight under our chin, and proceed to tell two tales of horror guaranteed to make your blood run like ice water in the veins, no matter which side of the political divide you hail from. That's right, it's Hallowe'en season again! Actually, to be scrupulously honest, it's the eve before the eve before All Hallows' Eve

Oct 29 · as they have tried to do to public schools. The philosophy and famous saying has been that throwing money at public schools just wasn't going to work. But now they are going to throw money at struggling charter schools. Yeh, that'll work. SUNY officials are mulling a new move that would try to turn around failing charter schools rather than just shuttering them -- an initiative that could get its first trial at a struggling Harlem center. While officials wouldn't name the trou

Oct 28 · Theres gold in them hills! Under the cover of education reform is a reformation of the role of government in education by private companies who wish to deregulate the public school system in the same way other public commons have been deregulated since the 1960s. "So, while the governments role would still be significant, it would no longer operate the citys entire portfolio of public schools. Instead, it would take on a role similar to the FAAs role in monitoring the airline indus

Oct 29 · In my lifetime, I've NEVER seen a government or party which completely represented me. I thought, when I first began to pay attention to government, and I'm certain now, that it's not designed to just represent me, but is responsible for a myriad of needs and concerns - some of which I may not share. *The only thing I've ever felt I was due was to have my ideas compete alongside the others. I've always understood that I'd have to generate as much enthusiasm for a candidate from my district or

Oct 29 · What Obama Is Missing Cenk Uygur Host of The Young Turks Posted: October 29, 2010 03:34 AM I know everyone is going to yell at me for writing this now. I can hear it now, "We're trying to win an election! You're not helping! Criticizing Democrats now is akin to getting into bed with Karl Rove!" Ok, I hope not the last one, that sounds creepy, but you get the point. The reality is while a lot of people are talking, we're actually doing something... - snip - Stewart got him to ad

Oct 29 · A Nonviolent Exchange of Views in Four Parts 1. Don't You Know That You Can Count Me Out - In By David Swanson Ted Rall's new book "The Anti-American Manifesto" advocates for violent revolution, even if we have to join with rightwingers and racists to do it, and even if we have no control over the outcome which could easily be something worse than what we've got. We have a moral duty, Rall argues, to kill some people. Now, I much prefer a debate over what radical steps to take to a debat

Oct 29 · Okay maybe I'm exaggerating slightly  But you may have noticed that the Admins are around a lot more these days, and you may have heard us talking recently about potential changes to DU. As part of this process we recently re-opened the Ask The Administrators forum and ran our first annual member survey to take the temperature of the membership and get some feedback on the direction of DU as we move forward. From the comments that were left on the survey it quickly became clear

Oct 29 · If the Democrats had used 2009 and 2010 to end the wars and prosecute Bush and Cheney, not to mention Wall Street, for their crimes; put prisoners on trial or free them; expose and hold accountable those behind the torture, warrantless spying, assassinations, and war lies; if they had thrown out the filibuster rule; restored the right to organize a union; created Medicare for All; and guaranteed a job to anyone in need through a new green energy program and huge investments in education, two thi
