Another salvo in the ongoing battle between “new” and “old” media, fired by Manifest Destiny.

No Princesses Here tries to show her daughter that there’s a big, wide world out there, regardless of how much caffeine it takes to get there.

Hipsters versus the “Creative Class”? Parsing the distinctions between the two, if there even are any, at Diatribes by Joah.

Your humble editor has always had a tortured relationship with math. It seems that I’m not the only one, too. Scribes & Scoundrels falls in, out, and in love with math.

Ooh, if acupuncture is as amazing for sleep inducement as Lemon Gloria says it is, I am so, so there.

Like the GLAA Forum, this contributing editor finds Virginia Thomas’s call to Anita Hill asking for an apology totally creepy PunditMom, in her piece on the Stir, wants Mrs. Thomas to get over it already (“after all, you won”).

Angela Roberts, in her blog Nine Ravens, remembers her father and his death, slightly more than ten years ago.

We all forget things.  Candy Sandwich recalls knowing how to do things and knowing things that she no longer knows how to do or just no longer knows.

The Washington Humane Society has a team running in the Marine Corps Marathon.  If you love your furry friends (come on, everyone’s very important, but if it weren’t for cats, dogs, and other critters, no one would be all that happy to see most people in this town), why not sponsor the team at $1 per mile (total $26.20)?

What is it like to be a hesitant person (those who are impulsive really want to know)?  Nine Ravens discusses her temperament, not always happy with the results.

And Parenting by Dummies (and if most parents were honest, wouldn’t that be most parents?) is holding an (un)Haunted Halloween Photo contest.

Frank self-examinations of one’s sexuality are rare, and even more so when accompanied by scrutiny of relationship history. The Heartbreaker behind the I’m Gonna Break Your Heart blog has an unexpected experience that does just that. She learns about being literally and metaphorically cold-blooded.

DC Femmela is up for a Youtopia Award. Help out a local in her efforts to win a grant.

The differences between the United States and the United Kingdom are well documented and well known. Not Enough Tequila in the World explores some of the lesser known distinctions.

The Slow Cook examines the issue of feeding poor children at our public schools while simultaneously and perhaps unintentionally shinning a light on the unvarnished hate that bubbles to the surface of anonymous internet conversations.

The following post is from a now defunct blog, but is a worthwhile read nonetheless. What’s it like to be the Other Woman from Bourbon and Sympathy.

Normally haiku seems like a serene poetry form.  Normally.  Check out this Fifty First (J) Dates haiku.

ScaryMommy isn’t the scariest poster on the web by far — she asks for support for a mother who lost her son (after hemorrhaging following circumcision) and is being attacked by “intactivists.”  Anyone who attacks a parent right after the parent loses a child is scarier by far.

Girl from the South criticizes Pundit Mom’s discussion of the Krystal Ball sex photo scandal and discusses the differences in conservative and liberal feminism, saying that conservative women have only had the last two years to build networks.

la acera tells of her encounter with the “potty cop” at the McDonald’s in Adams Morgan, in the post, Exercising My Right to Pee.

A pet lover, sans pet, writes of her adventures in and out of the Dupont Dog Park. This Chameleon’s Life. Excerpt: The heavy black gate opens and slams shut beside me, shuttling in several newcomers who are warmly greeted by the cast of lucky characters to whom this park belongs. I’m acutely aware of my absurdity but can’t bring myself to go in. If this were a therapy session, I would hereby declare (after several long gulps), that I’m a … Pet-a-phile.

A former DC residents returns to some neighborhoods he hasn’t seen in a decade and writes (in a listserv post on Ibo-talk) about the change. Excerpt: What freaks me out more than the diversity of D.C., coming from Kansas City, are all the well-off young people. I just wonder if they understand that they are living in a bubble surrounded by a country that doesn’t enjoy their standard of living. The post: Gentrification Shock.

Soup is Not A Finger Food writes: This morning, something happened to me that I haven’t experienced in my 20 years in DC. As I was standing on my ascending escalator step, trying to get out of Dupont Circle, the escalator just stopped.

The Black Squirrel is serving more than beer. It’s writing a blog with a point of view. In Ticket Me This, it writes: Instead of implementing a bag tax, the city should have put the parking control officers on the Anacostia River. Given their dedication, they would have the river cleaned up in short order. Or they would fine it.

A note:

Contributions are welcome for the art that runs above the daily post. It can be a photograph of DC area scene, a sketch, art, or representation; creativity rules. The goal this blog is to help discover writing that tells us something about the life and times of this wonderful place. This view allows for a variety of expression. If you submit something, it is generally a signature of the blog to add the “DCBlogs,” to the work (in a typeface of your choosing) or allow us to add it. A link and credit will run under it. (Note: Generally, we avoid running photos where people can be easily identified.) If you interested, just write: dcblogs@gmail.com
