Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has had plenty of successes this year, but might be about to rack up a big fail tonight as voters in her home state decide whether to oust Sen. Lisa Murkowski.
There are few public polls for this race but operatives for both Republicans and Democrats tell TPM they expect Murkowski to prevail tonight by a wide margin. Still, in a last-ditch effort to boost her preferred candidate Joe Miller, Palin recorded a robocall you can hear below suggesting Murkowski is a waffler who prefers Democratic policies. And even though several Republicans have been toppled this year by tea-party-favored candidates like Miller, those claims are a stretch.
A major question that's likely to be resolved tonight is just how influential Palin remains in her home state, given she resigned from the governorship last summer and has become a national figure.
"Her endorsement has a lesser impact than it would have had two years ago when she was at the peak of her visibility," an Alaska Republican familiar with the race but not affiliated with either campaign told TPM.
The source said a recent poll showed Palin with a 41% favorability rating and 46% unfavorable rating in Alaska. "That's a long way from the 80+ favorable she had in summer of '08 when she was the nation's most popular governor," the source said.
Plus, as ABC's Jonathan Karl lays out nicely here, there's a longstanding family feud at the root of Palin's anti-Murkowski feelings.
Palin says Miller has "backbone" to stand up to President Obama, and charges that Murkowski "has voted with the Democrats more than any Republican up for reelection this year." Those efforts are on top of several exclamation-laden Tea Party Express emails and fundraising drives and an endorsement from the Minutemen for opposing "amnesty" for illegal immigrants.
The group wrote supporters this week:
"Minuteman PAC can play a pivotal role in his victory, just as we are in Sharron Angle's fight to defeat Harry Reid! We've already fought and won in several key races, and we're going to pick up the fight in this one too!"
"We're going to win it," a Miller spokesman told TPM yesterday in an interview.
The Alaska Republican source said that's highly unlikely. For starters, Murkowski is well-liked back home, and outside groups aren't.
Her voting record is far from liberal, the Republican said, and she voted against every major initiative proposed by the Obama administration this year. Murkowski did support the TARP bailout in 2008, but several GOPers have survived primaries for similar grounds.
Hotline on Call points out that Democratic Sitka Mayor Scott McAdams will challenge the winner of the primary on the fall ballot. They report: He is almost guaranteed to win the primary, as his only competition are the long-shot candidates Jacob Kern (D) and '02 nominee/'92/'96/'98/'08 candidate/'94/'00/'04/'06 AK-AL candidate Frank Vondersaar (D).
Here's that Palin robocall:
Post-Election Update: Or not. Miller is leading Murkowski by about 3,000 votes with 84% of precincts reporting. The final results won't be known for a week or more. More here.

Hey Free Rider. Just a quick note to ask if you saw Rachel last night. She talked about all the incumbents who have won their primaries and the ones who havent. The incumbents outnumbered the others 300 some to about 6. So this proves my point that all this bullshit from the media about anti incumbent sentiment just isn't proving to be the case - not even by a longshot.

I still remember how visible disappointed some media pundits were when a Democrat won the special election to fill Murtha's seat. You could tell they did not have their talking points ready, as they obviously so wanted a loss in the Democratic column and the win obviously did not fit their carefully laid narrative.
I also recall it was not too long ago they were declaring how Obama would not win the white, working class voters. Yeah, we see how that worked out.
I agree; the whole "vote the bums out" is bullshit. I can recall polls saying people don't like Congress, but seem to like their own representative. I really wish the media would stop trying to make news in declaring "bloodbaths" and just report the fucking news.

Yeah I wish they would too but they won't so we have to either turn them off or just filter out the bullshit which is no easy task.
I don't buy that we are going to have a blood bath in Nov. 2010 and I am confident the dems and Obama will win again in 2012.

Oh yea, she ran the names of all the incumbents who won their primaries but the list was too long so she asked her producer to list the ones who didn't and it was about 6 and some of them were republicans.
I agree its all media hype - anti-incumbent bullshit. I'm not buying into the November bloodbath either.

I disagree- the anti-incumbency fever is having an effect. unfortunately for Replublicans, and for the media's preferred storyline, it is affecting their incumbents, not the Dems. They are throwing out their best chances of winning by putting up these tea-bagger candidates.

Why should we believe any of the hype the MSM/Republicans put out? They have been wrong more often than right and it is all about ratings. The GOP used the "bloodbath" to try and get donations and we see how well that worked out. They did the "Obama's Waterloo" before that and it failed. Democrats will lose seats but retain control of both houses of congress and the GOP will fail again. Can't wait to see how they handle it. Goes without saying that Steele will be out, he was their scapegoat all along.

Right, no way to I want a bat-shit crazy candidate on the Republican side just because somebody like that should be easy to beat. Ideally, I want both candidates to be people I would at least have some comfort with as national leaders, so that whichever the way the election turns out, I can at least feel that the country is not likely to be taken over the cliff.
I had great misgivings about Bush in 2000, but I let myself be reassured by William Safire, in an address he gave at a local forum. Both candidates would make good presidents, he cooed. So I let down my guard and didn't worry so much, and didn't appreciate the true nature of the disaster of the outcome of the 2000 election until after Bush had actually taken office. He didn't quite take the country off the cliff, but he brought us to the precipice, and we aren't all that far away from it even now.
I look at the likely prospects on the Republican side today, and they scare the bejesus out of me. There's not a single one of them I would care to see run.

Well, partly due to gullibility, partly due to Kerry's total ineptitude at realizing this, and partly due to Karl Rove being the most evil man of the 21st century, but you'd probably know better than I. I mean no offence to the sane folks in those areas (curse my stereotypical politeness!), but it seems gullibility levels increase the further towards the middle-south of this continent you go... also, let me be clear: I'd rather two rational candidates. I just don't see it happening. The right in the US seems captive to the nut-jobs they used to just exploit for votes.

What I'd like to know is why she still calls herself Governor Sarah Palin and is introduced at speaking events as Governor Sarah Palin? First of all, even if Governor WERE a lifelong title of honor, like Mr. President, then I'm sure it would be exclusively reserved for people who actually LASTED MORE THAN A HALF TERM AS GOVERNOR BEFORE QUITTING!

The article wasn't Josh's prediction, the story was based on the prognostication of others who should know... latest poll in July had Murkowski at 61.8% to Miller's 29.6%... and "operatives for both Republicans and Democrats tell TPM they expect Murkowski to prevail tonight by a wide margin". So, as much as you'd like to pin the faulty prediction on Josh, that error lies elsewhere.

This really should be a teachable moment for everyone who expressed foolish thoughts on this thread ('anti-incumbency BS,' 'Sarah Palin has no influence' etc. etc.). Miller was pulled out of nowhere by Palin and, even if he loses slightly w/ the absentees (which isn't likely, but not impossible), it's already a significant win.
Deal with the reality out there, not the fantasy that lives inside your skull - the public is pissed, Obama is toxic, and the Dems are cruising for a very painful beating in November. TPM readers, start making your plans now to emigrate to France, you're going to like America on November 3, 2010 even less than you do now.
