Chicago Fans Boo Presentation Of ‘BP Crosstown Cup’ At Cubs/White Sox Baseball Game

This weekend, the National League’s Chicago Cubs are facing off against their crosstown American League rivals, the Chicago White Sox. The interleague showdown is being sponsored by BP. The British company signed a three-year deal with the teams on April 26, just days after the oil disaster in the Gulf occurred.

BP’s sponsorship of the games features broad dissemination of their company logo and includes the presentation of an official trophy — the “BP Crosstown Cup” — to the victor:

bplogocrosstown_cup

As the Chicago Tribune’s Phil Rogers notes, instead of wasting money on this marketing exercise, BP could probably “use every dollar it can get to try to get to the bottom of the devastating leak in the Gulf of Mexico.”

Before the game, the trophy was wheeled out to the home-plate area and presented to the fans. As might be expected, the fans responded by booing loudly. Watch a local report:

Promotions during the games have been “scaled back.” Both teams, however, sent out press releases on Friday saying they stand with their corporate sponsor:

Brooks Boyer, senior vice president of sales and marketing for the White Sox: “But just like we have tough seasons, our partners have tough times and we aren’t going to turn our back on our partners. We hope that in the coming years, the BP Crosstown Cup will be part of the social fabric of Chicago.”

– Cubs spokesman Kevin Saghy said: “We’re trying to stand behind our sponsor, but at the same time be respectful of what’s happening off the ballfield.”

The teams are out of touch with what their respective fans think. Cubs fan Chris Silva said he is upset at how BP has handled the oil spill. “It’s ruined the environment. It’s ridiculous how can you support them doing this cup between the two teams. It’s sad,” he said.

Local Fox reporter Tera Williams said she tried to look for baseball fans who thought that the BP cup was a good idea, “but we couldn’t find anyone. In fact, a lot of fans telling us that they are boycotting BP gas stations.”

Send it down to the Gulf.

The teams and BP should absolve the contract after this ridiculous branding of a rivalry. I certainly would not want to have a corporation stand between a Red Sox/Yankees rivalry (although some could argue both are corporations in their own right).

In all honesty, I hope someone vandalizes that “Cup” in the future. Maybe not as far as throwing used oil on it, but a nice dent or two and a spray can could do the job.

  4. noseeum says:

Better yet, shove it down the pipe.

This is a ridiculous subject for a thread. I in no way support BP, they deserve all the bad press they are receiving, but this story is much ado about nothing.

This promotion was planned long before the deal was signed and I’m sure a lot of time and money has already been spent. They’ve already scaled backed the promotion, I doubt canceling it at this late date would have resulted in any substantial savings.

Faiz, don’t be so lazy, get off your a$$ and find a real controversy to write about, not something lame like this.

While you’re at it, why don’t you do something about the trolls who have ruined your blog. Don’t you realize that they may be partly responsible for the substantial reduction in TP’s readership.

  9. Wayne A. Schneider says:

It’s bad enough that MLB teams sell stadium naming rights to large corporations, even if they are financially strapped (like CitiGroup), but to have them sponsor a six-game series between two teams smells of desperation to make a buck. That it is BP doesn’t matter to me (other than making it worse), but that they do it at all disgusts me.

  10. zxbe says:

Stepping away for a moment that this is BP, brand placement has become ridiculous. I’m surprised they don’t sell the innings, and the bases in baseball for sponsorship.

“It’s a line drive out to Coca-Cola Right Field, and the runner from Toyota Third Base, will head to Depends Home Plate and score. We’re still at the top of the Lipitor Second Inning, with a runner on Canon First Base. We’ll be back after another word from our sponsors.”

  11. Bozo The Neoclown says:

you think that’s bad ayne, wait until they begin opening making campaign commercials for politicians.

  12. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Accoring to the brit’s it’s the BP stock holders who are penshioners who are really the victims here

Victims of their own bad investment choices, maybe. Look, if the British government wants to invest its pension money in some company, it is up to them to choose a reputable company in which to invest. Clearly they made a bad choice here. That’s not President Obama’s fault, that’s BP and their executive officers who have been lying about this disaster from the very beginning. BP ruined its own stock price.

  16. Purple State says:

Having worked with contractual relationships before, Reggie makes a good point. That being said, the teams and BP should quietly dissolve the contract so a second and third “BP Cup” doesn’t come around, but who knows if BP will actually be in existence by then?

Meanwhile, a REAL Cup is being fought for in South Africa. Got my Red White and Blue on today. Go, U.S. MNT!

  17. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    zxbe,

LOL! I’m, frankly, surprised it hasn’t already come to this. Next they’ll have the athletes using the sponsor’s products on the field. They’ll have the 5-Hour Energy Drink first inning in which all players down a shot of the stuff before they bat and take the field. Fans will love the Budweiser Fifth Inning where everybody has to down a beer before running to first. But most will leave the ball park before they get to the Ex-lax Eight Inning. You don’t want to know what happens there.

  18. Xisithrus says:

i agree that this campaign began before the horizon blast.

but really they need to wheel out a ‘trophy’ where you have to buy 8 gallons of bp gasoline with *invigorate, to play some lottery, which they will only say is some *proprietray additive.

what is it chlorethane? toluene? benzene? oxygen bubbles? some by-product of cracking crude oil?

    i did find this

Absolutely. While BP gasoline with Invigorate contains additives, it doesn’t contain any negative side effects. Only positive ones. It helps protect against sludge buildup, corrosion, and keeps your car running younger for longer. Safety first. Always.

  19. Xisithrus says:

Exactly. It’s just gotten to the point of ridiculous. I knew we were on the downward slope of this when the college football “bowl” games started to get renamed for their corporate sponsors. Is everything literally for sale in this country?

It is really too bad BP put its money toward self-promotion, instead of sending a fleet of tankers ASAP to the Gulf to vacuum up the oil. Just goes to show you what a lousy corporate neighbor BP is. Kudos to Chicagoans for having their priorities in order and knowing what to boo. That’s why their Blackhawks deserve the Stanley Cup — and Philly, whose fans will boo anything, does not.

Exactly! I’m in suburban Minneapolis, and we just built a new ball field for the Twins that they just had to have or they’d leave town. This is to replace the last field we had to build for the Twins or they’d leave. Target (which is based here) bought the naming rights, so it’s Target Field. Which is right next to Target Arena. Sad, but true. I realize that the naming rights gives a lot of free publicity, every time an announcer says “Welcome to zxbe Stadium, for the Wayne A. Schneider [insert bowl game name here], brought to you by Sears, there’s more to your life at Sears, and Visa, it’s everywhere you want to be.”

I have to wonder though how much sales are directly attributable to the naming rights. Is it really a money-producing item, or just vanity?

Yeah, and I realize there are intangible costs in business. Building brand recognition, etc. And clearly it must work or businesses wouldn’t be paying millions to do it.

But then I have to wonder about some companies that do it. The XCel Energy Center here in St Paul. Xcel is our local power company. It’s a regulated monopoly. What on earth do they need to buy the naming rights for?

    —————————————————————

I guess it was a dozen years ago when in Phoenix the Diamondbacks had a new stadium for their new team, but the Cardinals were still playing foosball in the old stadium on the ASU campus. They wanted a new one, and put the pressure on. They were a crappy team, and, according to popular opinion, were made so by their crappy ownership. Public sentiment wasn’t strongly on the side of new digs for the Cards. In fact, I got the laugh of the day listening to a local talk radio station where the subject was, “Where should the new Cardinals stadium be located?”

A caller gave the perfect answer: “San Antonio,” he said.

As it turned out, the Cardinals got their new stadium in the suburb of Glendale. Right next to the new arena where the Coyotes play hockey. In downtown Phoenix is the stadium where the D-backs play, a block or so from the arena where the Suns play. All four facilities are corporate-sponsor named.

That’s probably more than a billion dollars worth of real estate developed for pro sports and largely financed by taxpayers. Must be nice to be a corporate sports owner. Meanwhile, schools go without repairs and are laying off teachers because there ain’t no money. Good old American priorities.

Me, I quit watching or paying attention to pro sports at least ten years ago. I have no idea who’s on top or on bottom, and could care less.

Jesse Ventura actually had an excellent comment when he was governor. He was taking a tour of the Metrodome and the discussion was raging about whether or not to build a new facility. I don’t have the exact wording of what he said, but it was along the lines of what you said. Essentially as he was touring he said he didn’t see anything wrong with the Dome. It was only a 22-year old building and had been well maintained. Then he quipped that if we could send our kids to buildings that were much older and more in need of repair, there’s no reason why a bunch of millionaires can’t go to work in this building. And he concluded that if they wanted a new stadium, they should build it themselves.

The Cubs and White Sox did not foresee the magnitude of the BP spill story. At the time they signed the contract, the parties assumed the spill would be easily contained and plugged. Once the contract was signed it would be difficult to pull out. Even if the teams could pull out, they would not because of the revenues that the contract brings in to each team.

If BP thinks the situation will improve they are mistaken. The fans are booing because of the spill and the signage that BP will put up. The fans that booed BP are going to boo Toyota which is putting up a big sign on the right field wall. The ballpark is a landmark along with Boston’s Fenway and fans consider the signage as a defacement. Any company that is allowed to violate the integrity of the ballpark is going to be booed. Most fans do not care about who is sponsoring the games because the rivalry is more important.

When the Iranians finally got a democracy, they decided that the oil under their land belonged to the Iranian people and not to some foreign corporation. For their troubles, the CIA and the Brits overthrew the Iranian democracy in 1953 and installed the dictator shah. The shah went on to torture and murder thousands of Iranians who opposed his brutal dictatorship. and our ever-charming CIA helped to teach the shah’s secret police,

Broun needs to check temps for the rest of the country. In summertime, the Midwest and East Coast temps are just as high as the south. The heatwaves have killed many people in those areas. And that film izle is because they cannot afford air conditioning. If Broun wants to do something for the people then he should propose a bill to provide and subsidize AC for people who cannot afford it. Otherwise, he should keep his stupid to himself because every time he speaks, he makes a fool of himself. This is why the trolls and the Repugnantcon hypocrites just cause me to delaminate: these “people” engage in the most willfully vicious sort of posturing, violating any and every basic tenet of critical thinking while they pule and oyun havaları dinle posture, driven exclusively by the most impenetrably infantile ideological nonsense imaginable. So they cherry-pick this or that detail, hoot ‘n holler like they’ve made some profound point, and twist themselves into the most assanine pretzels imaginable to avoid dealing with the systematic and relational whole indirmeden film izle which is what the solution genuinely comprises.
