Apple Tablet “will be the most important thing I’ve ever done," says Jobs
24 Jan 2010 | 8:14 pmThat's what's overheard in Silicon Valley, says TechCrunch. Sure, the article's sources are cloudy (the author says he's heard it "multiple times second and third hand from completely independent sources," and unnamed "senior Apple execs and friends of Jobs are telling people that he’s about as excited as he’s ever been."), and technically we're still not even sure this thing exists. But it certainly builds buzz for most highly anticipated Apple product of the year, expected for release Wednesday. It's really something when the product is as fabled as what the CEO says about… -
7-year-old raises £70,000 for Haiti relief
24 Jan 2010 | 5:31 pmA 7-year-old London boy has raised more than £70,000 for Haiti earthquake efforts with a sponsored 7-lap (about 5-mile) bike ride around his local park. After seeing pictures of the earthquake victims on TV, Charlie Simpson became upset, according to the Telegraph.co.uk. So Charlie and his mother, Lenora, talked about what they could do to help. His mom helped him set up an online giving page to raise money for UNICEF relief efforts in Haiti. “My name is Charlie Simpson,” he wrote on the page. “I want to do a Sponsored Bike Ride for Haiti because there was a big… -
TSA officer pranks traveller by planting "contraband"
24 Jan 2010 | 4:52 pmWhen the TSA worker pulled a bag of white powder from 22-year-old Rebecca Solomon’s backpack, she started to cry. “Tears streamed down my face as I pleaded with him to understand that I’d never seen this baggie before,” the University of Michigan student wrote in The Michigan Daily. Solomon had never seen the bag before because she was, as it turns out, the victim of a cruel prank by the TSA officer. While making a routine trip back to college from her home in Philadelphia, the security employee had pulled her laptop bag during screening and refused to return her… -
Twupidity: "We regret the error."
24 Jan 2010 | 2:08 pmBusinessWeek published a story called “How Much Are Twitter’s Tweets Really Worth?” Click on the link to see where it now goes. Of course, you can also see the original story’s archive. What happened to the story is more interesting than the story at this point. Did Kim Kardashian’s lawyers make a stink? Did the fact checkers work through a backlog? This is the story that said that Kim gets $10,000/tweet and that I get $900/tweet. I don’t know about Kim, but I’ve never gotten paid by this company. The $900 number arose because I went to the site to…

New Apple Tablet Evidence Surfaces: Around 50 Test Devices Identified
24 Jan 2010 | 7:17 pmA new report by mobile analytics firm Flurry concludes that the Apple Tablet indeed exists, that about 50 test units are housed at Apple’s headquarters, and that it is primarily a media machine for gaming.Flurry’s analytics platform, because it’s run on thousands of different applications worldwide, is able to measure data such as OS, location, and engagement. In its data, Flurry has discerned that a group of about 50 devices are running the yet-unreleased iPhone OS 3.2 software, all of which have been geographically pinpointed to be located on Apple’s main Cupertino,… -

iPhone May Leave AT&T; Exclusivity Wednesday [Rumor]
24 Jan 2010 | 3:34 pmIt’s almost inevitable that AT&T will lose its iPhone exclusivity sooner or later. According to Hot Hardware, that milestone could come as early as next Wednesday at Apple’s special event. It makes sense for Apple: analysts say iPhone sales could as much as double as a result of pursuing broader carrier distribution. Plus, it would help assuage the Justice Department, who have indicated concern over iPhone exclusivity with AT&T.It even makes sense for AT&T, who in some ways are arguably shouldering an excessive burden by being the sole carrier of the data-intensive… -
Chinese Government Denies Involvement in Google Cyberattacks
24 Jan 2010 | 2:32 pmThe Chinese government has officially denied any involvement in the sophisticated cyberattacks that breached Google’s security. The statements come 11 days after Google threatened to pull out of China unless it’s allowed to run its search engine uncensored. The statement, aired during two interviews on the Chinese state’s news agency, came out strong against accusations that China itself had involvement in the attacks against Google and the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists. Here’s what a spokesman for the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology… -

Michael Arad Offers Sneak Peek at 9/11 Memorial Fountains
24 Jan 2010 | 9:04 pmAfter working on his contribution to the 9/11 memorial project for more than seven years, architect Michael Arad tested a mockup of the fountain concept named "Reflecting Absence" which will eventually become the centerpiece of a new park at the World Trade Center site. The two fountains, situated in the footprints of the World Trade towers are scheduled to open in time for the 10th anniversary of the attacks, next year. In an industrial lot situated in Brooklyn's Navy Yard, two monolithic walls were constructed to represent a corner of one of the fountains. Arad then tested how the tiny… -

Polycom and Juniper Team to Solve Age-Old Telepresence Problem: Communication
23 Jan 2010 | 7:20 amVideo conferencing technology has been around for years, but most of us still don't spend our days sitting in large rooms staring at virtual counterparts of our distant coworkers—we prefer confusing conference calls or plain old Skype instead. Why is that? If video conferencing is the meeting of the future, a movement toward a world that is truly flat, why, in 2010, isn't everyone on it?Well, mostly because it's so damn complicated. Because it hogs bandwidth. Because the thingamajig in my office doesn't work with the thingamajig in your office. Because it's a big hassle. But today's… -
How Much Energy Will the 2010 Olympic Games Use?
22 Jan 2010 | 8:35 pmThe world's growing interest in all things green--along with international conferences like COP15--have put pressure on Olympic organizers to prove that the 2010 Winter Olympics won't have a big environmental impact. That's why the International Olympic Committee enlisted help from energy conservation startup Pulse Energy in monitoring real-time energy usage at this year's games. The best part: Pulse's Venue Energy Tracker Web site lets anyone keep track of the amount of energy being consumed in Olympic sports arenas. According to Pulse Energy CEO David Halliwell, the idea for the energy… -
Genzyme: Good; Genzyme Movie With Han Solo, George of the Jungle: Bad
22 Jan 2010 | 5:23 pmGenzyme, a leading biotech company that made our Most Innovative Companies list last year, makes its (fictional) film debut today, although, according to a recent Reuters article, the company isn't necessarily thrilled about it. For one, the movie in question, Extraordinary Measures, stars Brendan Fraser and Harrison Ford. Together. Secondly, it doesn't exactly portray the company--called Zymagen in the film--in a positive light (Zymagen buys out the start-up run by Fraser and Ford's characters and cancels their project in favor of its own). Last March, we praised Genzyme for its innovative…

Brightcove Wants To Take “TV Everywhere” Beyond Your Cable Company’s Video Website
24 Jan 2010 | 8:46 pmWhen cable companies like Comcast and Time Warner talk about “TV Everywhere,” they are generally talking about a Web video portal they control themselves which gives their regular cable TV subscribers access to at least some of the same programming online. If viewership is going to shift online, they want to be the ones providing it—and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. But when Brightcove CEO Jeremy Allaire talks about TV Everywhere, he envisions more of a federated model where TV programmers make more of their shows available on their own sites to visitors who are… -
Breaking: Flurry Notices Cupertino-based Users Testing Apps on Apple Tablet
24 Jan 2010 | 7:39 pmFlurry, a mobile app analytics company, has noticed approximately 50 devices in the Cupertino that match the characteristics of Apple's tablet device. Flurry claims to have reliably placed these devices on Apple's Cupertino campus, and are confident that they are "observing a group of pre-release tablets in testing." This make sense - as the Apple Tablet has to be tested before it is announced this Wednesday, January 27 in San Francisco. Furthermore, Flurry has been an extremely reliable source on analytics data thus far and don't often break stories unless they are sure they've checked their… -
Exploding Term Sheets Prompt Y Combinator To Sync Acceptance Dates With Competitors
24 Jan 2010 | 7:24 pmThis evening Y Combinator opened up applications for its Summer 2010 round, marking what will be the fifth anniversary of the program, which has funded 171 startups to date. This round is bringing an important change: the program calendar has been moved up by a month, which means that startups will find out if they’ve been accepted at nearly the same time that they’ll hear back from competing programs like TechStars and DreamIt Ventures. The move stems from the growing competition between Y Combinator, which pioneered the startup mentorship model, and similar programs that have… -
Overheard: Steve Jobs Says Apple Tablet “Will Be The Most Important Thing I’ve Ever Done.”

We haven’t heard this first hand, but we’ve heard it multiple times second and third hand from completely independent sources. Senior Apple execs and friends of Jobs are telling people that he’s about as excited about the upcoming Apple Tablet as he’s ever been. Track New Foursquare Deals And Easily Drink For Free
24 Jan 2010 | 3:41 pmOne of the most interesting things about Foursquare is the local venue deals offered through the service. Unfortunately, the only way to find them is either to check-in to a place at or near where one of the deals is, or to check out Foursquare’s Businesses page, which just has a huge list of all their deals in every city. But now there’s a better way built using Yahoo Pipes. Arthur Klepchukov implemented a pipe which simply takes the Foursquare Businesses page and runs it through some filters to get at the new deals in certain cities. As you can see, in Klepchukov’s…

The ubiquity of competition
24 Jan 2010 | 2:58 amSure, there are playoffs in football, but competition is everywhere, we just forget to notice it.There are three hundred photographers looking for work in a particular specialty. One puts a creative commons license on his shots in Flickr and they start showing up in many places, from presentations to brochures. Which of the 300 photographers has won the competition for attention? Which one of the three hundred has shared his ideas enough to be noticed? There are twenty towns you can choose for your family's new home. One invests in its schools, has a focus on inquiry, AP courses and community,… -
The false solace of vilification
23 Jan 2010 | 2:12 amFile this one under basic human emotions that marketers need to be aware of.When a global slowdown, national tragedy or random event hits, people look for someone to blame. If there's no one to blame, sometimes they look for someone to hate, even if it is ultimately self-destructive.A novice computer user downloads viruses, interacts with spyware and encounters a system crash. He calls tech support for the word processor he uses and lets them have it with both barrels.A flood hits a town and innocent people die and buildings are destroyed. The widows and bereaved families take it out on the… -
No, everything is not going to be okay
22 Jan 2010 | 2:59 amIt's natural to seek reassurance. Most of us want to believe that the choices we make will work out, that everything will be okay.Artists and those that launch the untested, the new and the emotional (and I'd put marketers into all of these categories) wrestle with this need all the time. How can we proceed knowing that there's a good chance that our actions will fail, that things might get worse, that everything won't end up okay? In search of solace, we seek reassurance. So people lie to us. So we lie to ourselves. No, everything is not going to be okay. It never is. It isn't okay now. -
Too much data leads to not enough belief
21 Jan 2010 | 2:07 amBusiness plans with too much detail, books with too much proof, politicians with too much granularity... it seems as though more data is a good thing, because data proves the case.In my experience, data crowds out faith. And without faith, it's hard to believe in the data enough to make a leap. Big mergers, big VC investments, big political movements, large congregations... they don't usually turn out for a spreadsheet. The problem is this: no spreadsheet, no bibliography and no list of resources is sufficient proof to someone who chooses not to believe. The skeptic will always find a reason,… -
In between frames
20 Jan 2010 | 3:16 amScott McCloud's classic book on comics explains a lot more than comics.A key part of his thesis is that comic books work because the action takes place between the frames. Our imagination fills in the gaps between what happened in that frame and this frame, which means that we're as much involved as the illustrator and author are in telling the story.Marketing, it turns out, works precisely the same way.Marketing is what happens in between the overt acts of the marketer. Yes you made a package and yes you designed a uniform and yes you ran an ad... but the consumer's take on what you did is…

5 Things I Learned About Blogging from Being an Author and Journalist
24 Jan 2010 | 6:35 amA Guest Post by Alexandra Levit from www.newjobnewyou.com I’ve been an author since my early twenties, and a journalist since last year. All forms of writing were not created equal, and I’ve found that writing my blog, Water Cooler Wisdom has had its own set of challenges. However, there are a lot of takeaways for bloggers who have spent some time in the trenches of traditional media. Here are some that I’ve observed: 1. Endurance is King When I’m getting ready to start a new book, the very prospect of it is overwhelming – after all, 65,000 words is a lot of writing. These days,… -
The Blogger’s Guide to Becoming rich (Instead of Just Famous)
23 Jan 2010 | 6:15 amA Guest Post by Johnny B Truant I saw Gary Coleman on TV last night and thought, “That guy has to be rich. Everyone knows who he is.” But then I realized that Gary’s true paid celebrity ended over 20 years ago, and whether he’s rich or not today is really a matter of luck and investment. But that’s not how most people are wired to think. We figure that if someone is or ever was in the public eye, they probably have a big fortune. But who knows how well Gary invests? It’s distinctly possible that most of us here have more money then he does. This whole thing… -

So far in the series we’ve talked about Listening, Trust, Usefulness, Community, Being Personal and Story Telling. Not all successful blogs will do all of these things – but in my experience, many of them do. Today I’d like to continue this series by talking about another such principle – Uniqueness. The Problem of Clutter Almost every time I’m questioned about blogging I’m asked whether I think it is too late to… -
Lessons about Blogging from a 90’s Road Trip
21 Jan 2010 | 6:13 amI’m in two minds whether this story should go on my personal blog or here on ProBlogger. The lessons are about life but in the second half this post I tie them to blogging. Apologies for the quality of the images in this post – they’re pictures of pictures – my scanner died today! Unfortunately I don’t have any excuses for the clothes I’m wearing in some of the shots! On the spur of the moment on a cool September morning in 1993 a mate and I bundled some camping gear into the back of my 1986 Toyota Camry and left for a four week road to the red center of… -
How to Extend the Profitability of an E-Book Beyond Launch Week
20 Jan 2010 | 6:08 amMuch has been written about how to launch an E-book to maximise sales with a big bang in the time surrounding a launch. I wrote a few weeks back about my own $72,000 E-book launch and received a lot of feedback from readers on their own big launches. What happens after an E-book launches? Once all the bells and whistles of the initial offer fade – do E-books continue to sell or do you need to keep launching new ones (or re-launching the old ones) to keep turning a profit? Side Note: We just did launch a new E-book on DPS – this one is an introduction to understanding how cameras…

How NOT to Help Haiti
23 Jan 2010 | 8:46 amI’m getting tons of tweet requests to help Haiti by retweeting things. This is, in and of itself, okay. What needs to happen, however, is that we have to be specific and point to details, and we have to give people the right kind of information to be helpful. For instance, look at Chris Messina’s post on designing hashtags for emergency response. This is useful. Other ways? Point to blog posts or other websites that have the further detail. Other ways? Point to charities that you are confident are helpful. For instance, I support Skip1, because I know Shelene Bryan, and know how… -
How Systems Thwart Service
22 Jan 2010 | 9:15 amIt’s totally my fault. I’ll start up front by admitting that. Southwest Airlines was kind enough to sponsor my flight to and from the Social Media Club Dallas event, and I’m grateful for that kindness. But it all got messed up in the end, oddly thwarted by not having the right piece of paper on hand when I got to the ticket counter. The method is supposedly simple: if you receive a free voucher to fly as the guest of Southwest Airlines, they send you a paper ticket. You present this piece of paper to the ticket counter person when you check in, and then you receive a… -

24 Jan 2010 | 1:00 pmDesigner and blogger Phil Gyford spends a lot of time with six different text input gadgets, ranging from low-tech (pen and paper) to more high tech (full keyboard, iPhone keyboard, etc.) His question: Which gadget provided the quickest means of input?I have six input methods to compare: The Apple Newton MessagePad 2100's handwriting recognition (1997) The Palm Vx's Graffiti (1999) The Palm Treo 650's hardware QWERTY keyboard (2004) The Apple iPhone 3G's software QWERTY keyboard (2009) To test the speed of input I was going to use the same piece of text for each one. Put Together a DIY Wrapping Station to Organize Your Ribbon and Paper [DIY]
24 Jan 2010 | 12:00 pmHaving all your ribbon and wrapping paper in one location and organized neatly goes a long way towards making gift preparation less stressful. This simple DIY organizer puts your gift supplies out of the way on the wall.It might seem like a strange time of year, post-Christmas and all, to be talking about organizing your gift wrapping paper and ribbon, but most likely the whirlwind of the holidays left you shoving wrapping paper and supplies in a closet to be forgotten about until next year. After finding herself scrambling to wrap a gift for a party her daughter was attending Kate, the woman…

How to Blog like Shakespeare: Writing for Three Audiences at the Same Time
22 Jan 2010 | 7:40 amWilliam Shakespeare is the shorthand we use when we want to describe a great writer. He stands for the pinnacle of writing ability. One reason is that he mastered the art of writing for completely different audiences. He appealed to the ultra elite, to regular theater-goers who never missed a performance, and to the illiterate mobs in the cheap seats. And he managed to satisfy each audience magnificently. I’ve written a blog series around the web about how to write for each of three different audiences: new readers, regular readers, and experts. Now it’s time for us to try the… -
Three Quick Steps to Clear Writing
21 Jan 2010 | 7:46 am“Few appreciate brilliance, but everyone appreciates clarity.” I came up with that line on Twitter, and thought . . . Why waste it there? Here’s the quick and clear guide to clarity in writing: Short Short words are the rule that makes your exceptional words sing. Short sentences make powerful points faster. Talk Write like you talk, except better. Better words, better arrangement, better flow. Know the rules of grammar, then break them like you do. But better. Care Clarity comes from deeply caring if people truly understand. Do you? About the Author: Brian Clark is founder of… -
The Art of Zen Copywriting for Bloggers
20 Jan 2010 | 6:32 amIf you’re like many bloggers, you have (or you’re thinking of developing) products and services to sell to your readers. Your instinct might be to write the sort of hard sell copy you’ve seen so much of, because you will assume that’s what always works. But will it? Maybe. Maybe not. The trouble with hard sell is that it’s overused, it can destroy your credibility, and many bloggers just don’t feel comfortable being so aggressive. So what do you do? I’d like to show you a different approach to selling that turns conventional wisdom on its head,… -
The Most Important Success Tip: Stop Lying Down with Dogs, Already
19 Jan 2010 | 7:31 amI remember hearing a factoid a while back that said that your income is destined to become the average of the five people you spend the most time with. At the time, that bothered me. Outside of my family, I was hanging out with some folks who weren’t exactly rolling in dough. So to me, this factoid said: Dude, you’re going to be poor; Dude, if you want out, you’re going to have to ditch your friends and phony up to some rich people, which is lame; and Dude, if you do that, your new social circle probably won’t say “dude” at all. But it got worse. Your… -
Romance 101: How to Use Feminine Words That Sell
18 Jan 2010 | 7:14 amIf gender stereotypes make you uncomfortable, there’s a good chance you’re going to hate this post. Because this post is overflowing with gender stereotypes. It’s all about identifying, valuing, and celebrating the feminine. Today I’m going to talk about the use of words that are traditionally considered “feminine” to spice up your copy. Why would you want to do that? Well for one thing, whether you know it or not, you’re probably writing for a female audience. The economic power of women Women’s buying power has increased tremendously in recent…

Taking A Sick Day…
21 Jan 2010 | 9:15 pmHey gang, Brad here. I just got a message from Scott asking me to let you all know that he’s taking a sick day from the blog today. He’s got a cold, along with all the coughy, sniffly, wheezy, blechy stuff that comes with it. Nothing serious, just enough to need a day off from the blog He did ask me to pass along his thanks to John Keatley for a great guest blog on Wednesday. He told me that he really enjoyed the heartfelt story that John shared about one of the people who helped him pursue his photography career. If you missed it for some reason, I highly recommend… -

Shooting My First NBA Basketball Game
20 Jan 2010 | 11:43 pmLast night my buddy Erik Kuna and I got to shoot the Orlando Magic vs. Indiana Pacers NBA basketball game, and we had media passes that put us right under the basket (well, 6 or 8 feet to the right of it, anyway). It was my first time shooting NBA Basketball (well, for that matter, it was my first time shooting basketball) and as you might expect we had a blast!!!! (plus the Magic won!). I wanted to include the three-frame shot you see above of a slam dunk from Magic star Dwight Howard (who had a season-high 32 points in last night’s game) but to really see it, you have to click on it… -
It’s “Guest Blog Wednesday” featuring John Keatley!
19 Jan 2010 | 9:01 pmMy story has very little to do with me, and much more to do with those with whom I have crossed paths. My life would be very different if it were not for the kindness of others. Through reflecting on events in my life, I realized I need to write down my story, as a way of honoring those who have had a hand in shaping my career path. Hopefully you will be inspired by something you read here, and in turn encourage someone you cross paths with. It doesn’t take much. Before I began my career in photography, a total stranger stepped into my life and encouraged me. We spoke for only a few… -
Tomorrow’s Guest Blogger Is…
19 Jan 2010 | 1:21 pmSeattle-based photographer, John Keatley. A while back, I (Brad) put out a tweet asking who people’s favorite photographers were. Among the responses I got was Mr. Keatley. I took a look at his site and immediately contacted him about doing a guest post. For those who know me, you know that I have a fairly sarcastic/dry/twisted sense of humor, and John’s work is right up my alley. He does a number of commercial and editorial assignments that are fairly straightforward. But his personal work tends to be a bit off-kilter, in a good way. His clean and simple style is also very…

Pope to Church Leaders: Blog, Already
24 Jan 2010 | 9:26 pmToday, Pope Benedict XVI announced that priests and church leaders should be actively using digital tools, including the social web, to communicate with laypersons, particularly young people. The occasion was the 44th annual World Communications Day, traditionally a time for the Vatican to project an annual message for the church to its people and the rest of the world. This year's message stood in sharp contrast to the missive he delivered in 2009, when the Holy See stated that mass media - including online information sources - acted as a "poison" that numbed morality and sensitivity. "'It… -

Hey 'Girls'! Match Your Laptop and Your Lipgloss!
24 Jan 2010 | 1:00 pmJolie O'Dell sparked a fascinating thread on marketing to geek women - specifically, marketing cutesy pink stuff to them. Okay, so maybe there is a long-tail market for Barbie's Dream Server Farm. But my experience in shopping for consumer electronics says there's plenty of room for folks who sell technology of all kinds to get a little more savvy on how gender relations have changed. Think of all the items that you’ve discarded from your to-do list to save time. Even more frightening, what items might you have overlooked to meet a deadline? What have you left on the proverbial cutting-room floor yet again? What better time than the new year, or new decade for that matter, to tackle your neglected checklist? In this article, we’ll look at some commonly overlooked items on a typical… -

Find The Right JavaScript Solution With A 7-Step Test
21 Jan 2010 | 6:19 amAs Web developers and designers, we are spoilt for choice right now. To build a complex Web application or even just spice up a website with some highly interactive interface element, we have hundreds of pre-built solutions to choose from. Every library comes with widgets and solutions, and every developer tries to make a name for him or herself by releasing a funky JavaScript solution to a certain interface problem. We can pick from dozens of menus, image carousels, tabs, form validators and “lightboxes.”Having this much choice makes it easy for us to pick and choose,… -
Mastering Photoshop: Unknown Tricks and Time-Savers
20 Jan 2010 | 7:09 amWe all have shortcuts that are essential to our daily workflow. A majority of them are staples such as Copy (Command + C) and Paste (Command + V), but occasionally we stumble upon a shortcut we wish we’d learned years ago. Suddenly, this simple shortcut has streamlined our process and shaved quite a bit of time off our day. Collected here are some lesser known but extremely useful shortcuts. Many of these are not documented in the “Keyboard Shortcuts” menu, and some of them don’t even have equivalent menu options. Please note that all of the shortcuts… -

Home security on your iPhone
24 Jan 2010 | 1:30 pmFiled under: Software, Cool tools, Internet Tools, iPhoneWe all know how the iPhone can secure itself, but you can get it to secure your entire house as well. A while back, I briefly toyed with the idea of going without a landline. It's an alluring prospect, and strikes me as satisfyingly post-modern. But one thing held me back: my home security system, which relied on a landline to connect it to central monitoring. So even though I went through a brief affair with Vonage until Verizon FiOS Triple Play pulled me back in, I had to keep a limited line connected to the house for our security… -
Happy 26th Birthday, Mac!
24 Jan 2010 | 12:30 pmFiled under: Odds and ends, Apple HistoryDespite all odds, the Mac has survived to its 26th birthday. On January 24th, 1984, Steve Jobs pulled a 128K Mac out of its case in front of a crowd of reporters, turned it on, and let the computer introduce itself to the world. The rest, as they say, is history. We've seen our favorite computer go from an awkward infancy, to almost dying in its teens, and now being a profitable prodigy in adulthood. It has spawned a popular family of siblings, from the iPod series of media players to the iPhone. Somehow, it's fitting that we may see the birth of the… -
The MacView: An incredibly well-done concept tablet
24 Jan 2010 | 11:30 amFiled under: Odds and ends, Graphic Design Here at TUAW, we've been treated to so many concept drawings and fake photoshopped tablets over the past several months that we've become somewhat jaded about them. However, Polish designer Patrycjucz Brzezinski's concept for an Apple tablet, named the MacView, is so well done that it deserves mention. The MacView was developed as a diploma project for Brzezinski, and if the work shown on various Web sites is any indication, he may go far in his career as a designer. The concept of the MacView is different: rather than a single slab of aluminum and… -
Found footage: Jailbreak BTstack support extended to 1st gen iPod touch
24 Jan 2010 | 9:00 amFiled under: iPod Family, Cool tools, Hacks, iPhone, Jailbreak/pwnage The BTstack project that we've covered before on TUAW, offers a way for iPhone and iPod touch units to communicate with arbitrary external Bluetooth devices. To date, it's been used to connect keyboards, mice, and wiimotes with iPhone software. This system has now been extended to the first generation iPod touch, bringing all six iPhoneOS models into the Bluetooth arena. Since the 1st gen touch does not provide its own built-in system, it requires an external module. This video uses the dongle described at this blog post to… -
Dear Apple: What we want to see in iPhone 4.0, part 3
24 Jan 2010 | 8:00 amFiled under: iPhone This is the third in a series of letters from you, the TUAW reader, to Apple detailing what you want to see in the next iPhone. In the first letter, you told Apple what you want to from the next OS. In the second, you told them what you'd love in the next hardware. This final letter is all about Apple's built-in apps and how you think they can be improved. Even with rumors swirling that iPhone OS 4.0 will be previewed on Wednesday (along with some tablet thingy), chances are the OS won't be finalized until early summer, so there's still plenty of time for Apple to take…

On Assignment: John E. McIntyre
18 Jan 2010 | 8:02 amOne of the best things about spending 20 years in newspapers is getting to work with people like copy editor John E. McIntyre. He worked at The Sun for 23 years, including 14 years as head of the copy desk. John was the last line of defense against errors -- or outright stupidity -- getting into print. And that line of defense was well-fortified. It was not at all unusual to get a midnight call from the copy desk, beginning with, " We have a little question about something in your caption..."And more often than not, it was your sleepy butt they were saving.Who Needs a Cpy Desk, Anyway? As the… -

18 Jan 2010 | 7:30 amOn a kinda-related note, as of late last week Strobist's HQ began running on solar power. We only had enough roof space to offset about half of the juice we were suckin'. But it's a start. If you are on the fence about solar, take a look at some of the incentives that are being thrown around. We got a 30% federal tax credit, a Maryland state rebate, a county property tax rebate and are selling the renewable energy credits. All in all, that knocked nearly 70% off of the bill. It made the numbers a no-brainer. (We used Greenspring Energy, if you want more info.) We went with a solar water…

Can Your Photography Change The World?

Can your photography bring about a positive change for humanity’s sake? If so, would you care and how would you go about it? And just how much impact would you need to make you feel the outcome is worth effort? Sony Alpha 850 DSLR Review
23 Jan 2010 | 12:45 pmIn the territory of the DSLR camera we seem to have inherited a duality that continues, model to model. On one hand we have cameras with an APS-sized sensor, roughly half the area of the 35mm film frame. These benefit from the use of smaller, cheaper lenses, yet still capture well-accepted images. In the other hand we have high end DSLRs with full size sensors, like this one, able to use ‘normal’ 35mm lenses, with no enlargement factor involved when comparing the field size. Bigger and more expensive lenses is the price we pay for a full frame sensor. However, there is much going on… -
This Week in the Digital Photography School Forums (17-23 Jan ‘10)
23 Jan 2010 | 6:01 amWeekly Assignment You can tell it is winter for a lot of our forum members if you look at the Landscapes assignment we finished this week. There were a lot of snow covered landscapes out there. Our winner this week was one of those snow covered landscapes, lisa’s Lonesome Tree. The soft colour palette, composition, and simplicity of the landscape really made it stand out amongst the other lonesome trees. Our first runner up was Cpt’s Once Upon a Time. The starkness of the shot with just hints of the house and the lonely horse standing outside really tells a great story of winter. -

Video – DNG and Auto-Saving Changes
14 Jan 2010 | 9:01 pmWell everyone, after this week I think we will have successfully beat this DNG thing into the ground. It's all good though. I think the topic is worth a little extra time. Anyway, I realized there was one question that came up a lot. It deals with if/how/when Lightroom will save all of your edits to the DNG files and where those edits get saved to. The DNG Follow Up Post
10 Jan 2010 | 9:01 pmFirst off, thanks for all of the conversation in the comments on the DNG article the other day. I wanted to post a follow up to give some more thoughts and answer a few questions? For starters, I have to say there were more DNGers than I thought. I didn't go through and count each one but it felt like a 40/60 split (DNG/Not DNG). Based on my experience at workshops and seminars, that's more pro-DNG than what I've been used to. And that's a good thing. Don't get me wrong. Even though my post talked about some reasons people don't use DNG and I admitted that I don't convert to DNG, doesn't mean… -
To DNG or Not to DNG?
7 Jan 2010 | 5:44 amI received a question in the comment section the other day from some one asking about DNG and what the rest of the folks thought about it. The question was answered by a person that said something to the effect that they thought most people using Lightroom were converting to DNG upon import. It got me thinking about whether or not that was true. Most people I run into DON'T convert to DNG. I get lots of questions on it because they think that maybe they should, but they're not yet doing it. Personally, I think it's because there's still some confusion about what it is and what is does to your…

Jakester as Superhero….
19 Jan 2010 | 5:37 amSo I was with the DLWS gang in the Marin Headlands, looking at the Golden Gate Bridge, which, I can reliably report, does not move. See below. No stranger to photog paranoia and insecurity, which rages in the hearts and minds of shooters everywhere, I continued to prove that salient fact over and over again, as if my right index finger had developed a kind of idiot savant twitch, in that it knew how to do one thing well, that is, push the damn shutter button over and over again. I’ve always been good at simple, repetitive tasks, so I went to town and produced a grid of remarkably… -

18 Jan 2010 | 7:01 amOn the West Coast, finishing my last few days on this story for the great chiefs of the Land of the Yellow Border. Few things going on…. ADORAMA IPHONE CONTEST! This is pretty cool. Great prizes, easy to follow up and enter. Hit this link to check it out. I think this is wonderful, fun acknowledgment that we are all just a bunch of distracted slackers out there who really don’t do any work anymore but just wander through the streets and our workplaces making snaps and videos and playing with apps. We’ve come a long way since the time when we would slide into the video… -
Dang….
13 Jan 2010 | 6:56 amHave to admit I got caught up in it. Home run race, Big Mac, the whole nine yards, to mix sporting metaphors. I never said a word to him, because at the height of the whole shebang, he wouldn’t say zip to the media. Shut it down. No interviews or photo sessions. I was following him down the visiting dugout tunnel when he passed Walter Iooss, who is about the most connected sports shooter I know. Walter called out, camera in hand, “Mark, two minutes.” McGwire moved past without a word, like an ocean going freighter in a small canal, people, cameras, pens and notebooks… -
DLWS, 2010
12 Jan 2010 | 11:26 amFirst stop of the year for Moose and the gang…..San Francisco, Golden Gate Bridge. One SB900, camera left, Tri-Grip one stop diffuser, minus 2 EV programmed into the camera, plus one EV into the flash. Lots of folks shot some nice stuff of the bridge itself, but, being a people shooter, I just look at the bridge as a nice backdrop to put somebody against. Josh obliged, and we did a quick flash lesson out on the rocks for the group. Knocked around the bridge before, of course, as has just about anybody who’s come this way with a camera in their hands. Tony Bennett and I went up… -
Long and Winding Road….
7 Jan 2010 | 6:15 amThat was 2009, certainly. About 260 days on the road, another Geographic story notched and published, another started for this year. Blessedly, another year behind the camera. Ups and downs, a few good frames, lotsa bad ones, another camera update (hardly a yearly event, more like bi-monthly) and, instead of another file cabinet with hanging slide sheets, a few more terabytes of storage. Cameras became like cars–hybrids. Tweeting now, and saw the Facebook thing turn the word “friend” into a verb. Finally sold my Contax G2 rangefinders, so now, really, don’t officially…

Resetting Photoshop’s Preferences
21 Jan 2010 | 6:15 amHere’s a quick way to reset your preferences in Photoshop: Press-and-hold Command-Option-Shift (PC: Ctrl-Alt-Shift) while you start Photoshop. As you start the program you will get a pop-up dialog asking you if you would like to delete the settings file. Deleting the file will create a new set of preferences from scratch. -
Turn the Font Off and On
20 Jan 2010 | 6:15 amOften, I echo Matt Kloskowskiís feeling that font preview is either loved or hated. I find myself usually turning it off, and hereís why: I love fontsólots of them. I install fonts like thereís no tomorrow. Iím assuming that this is going to catch up to me at one point or another, but I continue [...] -
