Steam's Crysis Warhead Copy Protection FAQ
- BERJAYA 31 Comments
Following yesterday's full disclosure, we now bring you official word on what's what in Crysis Warhead copy protection land:

Will the retail version be activated via Steam or does it have an independent EA activation?

The Steam and retail versions both use SecuROM product activation online.

Will the Steam version have an activation limit?

The Steam version of Crysis Warhead has the same activation limit as the retail version of 5 activations. The Steam version of Crysis Wars will only require authentication upon installation just like the retail product.

How often can I install the game which I got from Steam?

Re-authentication is required only if you make significant changes to your PC's hardware, reformat your hard drive, or in some cases, upgrade your Operating System. Multiple installations of the game on the same computer that has not gone through significant changes will not count against the number of computers the game can be installed on.

Does Crysis Wars have online activation?

Crysis Wars is authenticated upon installation. If you want to play through Gamespy Arcade, you’ll need a valid registration key like most online games that use that service.

Can I play online only via Steam?

Online play for all versions of Crysis Warhead is done through Gamespy.

Are Crysis and Warhead the same when being downloaded via Steam as the hard copy ones?

Yes, the binaries and content are identical.

Mythic Cuts Off Pre-Order Accounts, WAR Players Left In The Lurch
- BERJAYA 18 Comments
Folks who pre-ordered Warhammer Online were able to play without physical copies through a pre-order code that was meant to be provide access to the live game until some time next week. Now, Mythic has changed the rules, cutting off all players who have yet to receive their retail release:

This announcement is to let everyone know that if you haven’t yet entered your CD key into the account center, you must do so by tomorrow (Friday) morning at 7:00 AM. If you do not enter your information into the Account Center by the deadline your characters will not be affected, you will just be unable to login until your product key is entered.

If you pre-ordered online and have not yet received confirmation that your order has shipped we encourage you to contact your retailers customer support to ensure you receive your game on-time. EA Store customers will be contacted with instructions on how they may continue playing while they wait for their box to arrive.

Think of it as a good time to stand up, have a stretch, and go out to greet that bright, giant, hot thing in the sky. Don’t forget your shades!

The WAAAGH! is understandably upset.

Activision Likes to Sue Pirates
- BERJAYA 28 Comments
Edge Online reports that Activision has filed a lawsuit against a guy who was allegedly distributing copies of the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty 3. This is just the latest case for Activision; according to Game Politics, the publisher has been suing alleged software pirates for a little while:

The video game lawsuits that GamePolitics has uncovered include:

  • Shawn Guse of Federal Way, Washington. Guse, unrepresented by counsel, agreed to pay Activision $100,000 (CoD 3 Wii, CoD 3 Xbox 360) to settle the case.
  • Chris Hyman of Abbeville, South Carolina. Hyman, also unrepresented, agreed to pay Activision $25,000 to settle the case.
  • George Laflin of New Jersey. Laflin, apparently the only defendant who had an attorney, agreed to pay Activision $100,000 (CoD 3 Xbox 360).
  • Maryanne Leach of Northome, Minnesota. Leach, with no attorney, agreed to pay Activision $1,000.
  • Kenneth Madden of York, South Carolina agreed to pay Activision $100,000 (CoD 3 Wii, Cod 2 The Big Red One PS2, Tony Hawk's Project 8, Xbox 360). He too was unrepresented.
  • James R. Strickland, aka Ryan Strickland of New York State; case is still active (CoD3 Xbox 360).

Far Cry 2: No Demo; Multiplayer Modes Revealed
    - BERJAYA 9 Comments
I believe we've posted the 'no demo' news in the past, but hey, here's a second confirmation. Disappointingly, the multiplayer modes are all rather uninspired considering the huge sandbox that's available:

The obligatory Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch modes will be present and correct, along with Capture the Diamond (if you've ever played Capture the Flag, you can probably work it out).

Plus there's Uprising, described by Pharand as "a modified version of a VIP".

"We decided that all persistency will occur within a match or a define series of matches," Pharand added. "That way, gamers will have a taste of all our great guns quickly. You will get upgrades within classes and it will allow you to be more tactical in your progression, depending of the type maps you play."

EA Will Not Rip You Off Online
    - BERJAYA 13 Comments
Oh my, where to start? Nickel and dime DLC, cheat codes, online store prices higher than any retail outlet and with numerous download restrictions... need I go on?

We've gone from connected consumers being the minority to connected consumers being the majority.

We need to look three years into the future and say it's going to be a completely different business, because of broadband connections. I am not going to be at the helm of a company that ends up like the music business that refused to stop trying to sell you CDs for £15 because it was a hugely profitable model. And the music consumer says, 'you know, I don't want to pay £15 for 12 tracks of which I want two, I don't want shiny discs anymore'. And so what did the industry do? It started suing its consumers for illegal downloads and, you know, Steve Jobs comes to the rescue to figure out a way to charge you 99 cents or whatever you're paying in the UK.

    79p

Is that what it is? You're being ripped off. We're not going to do that, we're going to evolve, we're going to go faster for the consumer, whatever the consumer wants. So in the future hard drives are going to be bigger, broadband is going to be faster and we're going to look back and laugh at the fact that we used to drive to the store to buy a piece of plastic with data on it. That business model isn't going to exist – I don't know whether it's going to be five years from now or ten years, but it's not going to be around anymore.

    Crytek's CryEngine 3 Set For 2011 Release
    - BERJAYA 14 Comments
Crytek's Cevat Yerli expects the Playstation 4 and Xbox 720 to be released by 2012 at the latest, so that's when he'll have CryEngine 3 ready to rock and roll:

"The future, in our terms, starts next year. Next year we start researching our 2012 engine," the Crytek founder told the audience.

"I believe in 2011 and beyond, you'll see very creative use of rendering methods," Yerli says. "It will develop a lot of styles."

Which might sound rather technical, but there are other ramifications. "Software rendering will become, again, a renaissance of programming. That will allow for a new style that will rival CGI."

Having reached those conclusions, Yerli states: "The action is simple. We are linking ourselves to the console cycle."

"Frankly we are linking ourselves to the PS4," he continues by saying that it's a "driving beacon" for his company, despite the fact that Sony hasn't given the company full details. "That's probably the most important information that our company is missing."

I dinged 10 in Warhammer Online. Not bad for a day of play and no prior beta experience. My only quibbles with the game so far as are some minor UI annoyances and the long queue times. EA Adding Account Controls To Each Spore Install
    - BERJAYA 2 Comments
Complaining works my friends - following a massive uproar, EA is to allow families to have five profiles per purchased copy of Spore. Previously, the game's manual had stated that accounts were possible, but EA later revealed that this was a misprint. Now, having received thousands upon thousands of complaints, the company is working on updates to the game and its website to allow Dad's cock monsters to be shielded from little Johnny's innocent eyes.

We are going to add the ability to have multiple Spore Screen Names for any one Spore Online Account. Here’s how this will work: for each copy of Spore that you have purchased, you will be able to have one Spore Online Account, just as it is now. However, we will be adding the ability to have five Spore Screen Names for that account. When you launch Spore, you will be able to log in with any of those Screen Names.

The content that is made and the MySpore Page will be associated with the logged in Screen Name for that account. Each Screen Name will be able to view and create content, Buddy Lists and Sporecasts that will be tied to that Screen Name. The Achievements earned will be credited to the Screen Name that is logged in at the time the Achievement is triggered. In the first iteration of this change, all Screen Names will be playing in the same Galaxy and any content downloaded by any Screen Name will be available in the Everything section.

As the forum post's FAQ states, the changes will take time, though honestly, profiles should have been in from day one, and obviously were at some point in time for the manual's editor to include specific details on how to utilise the removed feature.

Pre-Order Red Alert 3, Become A WAR Bear
    - BERJAYA 16 Comments
Pre-ordering Red Alert 3 from EA's selected partner nets you an exclusive in-game Warhammer Online item that can be used to transform your avatar into a Soviet War Bear for five minutes every hour.

Kossar's Helm are very rare helmets that players can only obtain by purchasing Command & Conquer Red Alert 3 (either the Command & Conquer Red Alert 3 Premier Edition, or the regular PC version of Command & Conquer Red Alert 3). Kossar's Helm will only be offered for a limited time inside Command & Conquer Red Alert 3.

These helms were rumored to belong to the deadly 77th Kislev Kossars Regiment, also known as "the Dancing Bears". Legend says that the regiment's warriors were able to transform into fierce slathering bears in the heat of battle. Many historians have postulated that the transformation was due to the enchantments held within the runes of Ursun the Bear God that were etched into each of the Kossar's Helms. Thought they were destroyed to a man at the Siege of Praag, their magical helms were never recovered and are said to circulate even today.

While in bear form, players can run around and show off. Bragging is very important in WAR. Taunting your foes and showing off is an integral part of the game experience. While the helm gives no actual stat bonuses, you get to turn into a frikkin bear! How cool is that?

Crytek's Crysis Warhead Copy Protection FAQ
    - BERJAYA 37 Comments
Breakin' it down: Five activations (up from three it initially launched with); unlimited installs on five machines if activation token doesn't kick up a fuss following hardware changes; DVD not required in drive post-activation; one authentication at first launch; single-player fully playable offline following one-time online activation; no de-authentication tool available, though EA Support will help out on a case-by-case basis; Steam-Securom copy protection to be detailed tomorrow.

Our passion is making quality games. We put our heart and soul in every game and hope that our fans will enjoy them as well. For years, Crytek fans have been passionately supportive of our efforts and we appreciate all of your dedication.

We realize that copy protection and piracy is a very emotional and hotly debated topic. It is very hard to find a solution that fits both our needs. We need to make an effort to limit piracy but we do not want to limit the experience of our fans.

Warhead uses online authentication and allows up to five activations. This gives you the opportunity to install the game as many times as you want on five different machines.

We also know that multiplayer gamers have different needs, so Crysis Wars does not have an activation limit, but requires the game to be unlocked online once you start the game for the first time. Afterwards it will be possible to play in LAN without any online connection. The CD-key is only required when playing online.

I sincerely hope that you will enjoy playing Warhead as much as we enjoyed making it. We are very proud of it. Our community is the main reason we make games. If there is something you feel we could improve, please tell us what and why and we will do our best to listen to you.

    Sincerely,
    Cevat Yerli

Crysis Warhead Includes Three-Activation Spore-Like DRM
    - BERJAYA 55 Comments
Sorry folks, EA lets you activate Crysis Warhead three times, period, just like Spore. However, it should be noted that EA has upped Spore's install limit to five and will issue a tool to de-authenticate and reclaim activation tokens "soon.," so hopefully the same will be done here.

The way round this hullabaloo, of course, is to purchase through Steam, though many Europeans will no doubt find the cost far too high when stores are selling the retail version at less than half Valve's price.

WAR Goes Live, Nags Players Every Load
    - BERJAYA 21 Comments
Mythic's boss notes in a community update that players will have to scroll through and accept an EULA every time they launch WAR.

Mythic Entertainment, an Electronic Arts Inc. studio, today launched the highly anticipated MMORPG, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (WAR), in North America, Europe and the Oceanic territories. “The Day of Reckoning is finally at hand and I am pleased to invite players to take their first steps into the Warhammer Fantasy universe,” said Mark Jacobs, co-founder and general manager of Mythic Entertainment. “The stage is set and the combatants are ready - it’s time to go to WAR!”

    The Witcher: Versus Trailer
    - BERJAYA 1 Comment
This seven-minute video demonstrates the enhancements and premium to-pay-for content that'll soon be added to The Witcher: Versus, a browser-based game developed for CD Projekt:

Later this year, developer one2tribe will add premium content to further enrich the deep gameplay of The Witcher: Versus, based on the hit PC RPG from CD Projekt RED and the wildly popular fantasy books from Andrzej Sapkowski. To avoid riots and hate mail, one2tribe reassures cash-strapped gamers around the world that they will not be shafted by this new content, as those who indulge in premium content will not gain an advantage within the game. The core gameplay of The Witcher: Versus will remain free of charge, and will continue to evolve in parallel in the coming months.

Premium content will be added gradually; the first premium access package will contain new features intended to ease account and character management; they include a rucksack for items that are not currently equipped, a history of fights against a certain player (for ultimate bragging rights), as well as a private duels archive. The designers will reveal additional details over the next few months.

Future changes in The Witcher: Versus will not focus on premium content only, and will serve to make the free-to-play game even more enticing; leagues, tournaments, challenges, a full-featured RPG world and much more will begin to find their way into The Witcher: Versus in the later part of the year.

Gamers who wish to hack, slash, and uhh… magic their way to victory over friends and strangers on their lunch breaks (or anytime, really) can visit the website to get in on the action.

Blood Bowl Goblins vs. Skaven Screenshots
    - BERJAYA 5 Comments
An ultra-violent mix of American football and other team sports, Blood Bowl takes place in the popular Warhammer universe, and allows players to build the ultimate fantasy teams:

The Goblins are small and cowardly creatures, renowned for their low intelligence yet sneaky attitude. One can often find them accompanied by gigantic Trolls (who are even dumber), in formations that seem more humorous than dangerous. Goblins, due to their small height and agility, make good receivers, but their chance of blocking a human-sized adversary is nearly nonexistent. Make no mistake about Goblins, though, they often use the most perverse weapons and techniques to counter their low strength – including the unique “Goblin throw!” In this play, a troll will grab a Goblin and throw him into position deep into enemy territory bypassing the opponents defensive line altogether. - a must for Goblins teams, as long as the Troll doesn’t decide to eat his small teammate before executing this move!

On the other side, Skaven, born of the foul magics of Chaos, are half-man and half-rat creatures, and though far from being the strongest or toughest players in Blood Bowl, wow are they fast! Many teams have been surprised by a Skaven slipping though their defensive lines to score a dazzling touchdown. Skaven can also call upon the phenomenal power of a Rat Ogre to counter their opponents and block the toughest players.

    Condemned 2: Bloodshot Ads Banned
    - BERJAYA 5 Comments
Silly old England, always banning adverts after they've run their course, never to be seen ever again, even without the ban hammer being swung:

The ads appeared in post-9pm and post-11pm slots respectively. The longer, post-11pm version showed three punches from a first person perspective, with a hooded figure holding a brick aloft then bringing it down towards the camera.

The watchdog received just nine complaints over the duo of ads, with three people recommending that the ads were ‘inappropriate for broadcast at any time’.

The ASA concluded: ‘… the ads contained scenes of graphic and brutal violence which, although computer-generated, were realistic in appearance.

‘We noted in particular that both ads showed a man punching another on the floor and blood splattering on the screen as a man was beaten with a club and considered viewers were likely to find those scenes offensive and distressing and to see them as condoning real violence and cruelty.’

Why Has Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway Taken So Long To Develop?
    - BERJAYA 7 Comments
In short, Playstation 3, although there were Unreal Engine 3 teething troubles too:

“This is the first time we have done a big, multi-platform game in-house, and it was brand-new technology, as well,” explained Cooke. “You kind of expect when you buy off-the-shelf software [Unreal Engine 3] that you’re just going to be up and running on all three platforms. We made a lot of changes to the engine, so each platform reacts to those changes differently. There’s a lot to follow up and that kind of stuff, trying to make it work right on all the different platforms.”

While the changes and tweaks made to the existing technology from Epic Games complicated matters, it was the PS3 version that gave Gearbox the most trouble. They had no experience on PlayStation hardware.

“In previous ‘Brothers in Arms,’ we had farmed out the PlayStation versions to other developers who were PlayStation experts,” he said. “So we had to build up all that expertise in-house to understand that platform. There’s just major hardware differences; you don’t know if your Xbox guy has a hard drive but your PlayStation guy does, and you’ve got 8 cores on this machine and 4 and a half on this machine and some PC users have…who knows how many?”

    Atari Taking Business Online
    - BERJAYA 2 Comments
Atari's latest Hail Mary idea is to take their entire business online, enabling them to cut costs and receive significantly more revenue per game sale:

Atari has revealed that 90 per cent of its output will be online-only in a few years as it increasingly favours online titles over traditional retail.

The publisher’s recent deal with Namco Bandai includes a clause which gives the Japanese developer and publisher the option to buy Infogrames’ distribution business outright in five years’ time – giving Atari the opportunity to concentrate fully on its vision of becoming a top-five online brand.

"We’re taking the first steps here," Atari CEO David Gardner told MCV. "In five years, Namco Bandai will probably own the majority of it, it will no longer be our responsibility and Atari will be just an online company – within five years we’ll have 90 per cent online products."

God of War Ganked Ideas From Author?
    - BERJAYA 9 Comments
A lawsuit filed against David Jaffe and Sony claims that the pair ripped off an author's idea after he presented it to them as a possible game:

The claims come from Jonathan Bissoon-Dath, the author of fictional works based around a mythical Greek warrior, and Jennifer Barrette-Herzog, who designed the map that accompanied his work 'The Adventures of Owen: Owen's Olympic Adventure'. Both plaintiffs claim that Jaffe's game contains similarities in plot, character relationships, themes, settings, mood, pace and dialogue.

The two plaintiffs claim to have given their work to agents who presented the work to Sony and that three years later God of War was released. Sony and Jaffe, however, deny any accusations of copyright infringement and have requested that they be reimbursed for any legal expenses incurred while defending themselves.

Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising's PC Optimisations
    - BERJAYA 9 Comments
EuroGamer got a real-time, 'real' demonstration of Codemasters' OpFlash 2, and by the sounds of things its going to be as technically demanding, performance wise, as Bohemia Interactive's seven year old original:

Achieving this level of realism is, understandably, a vast undertaking, and Lindop is keen to stress how important it is for it to gel correctly on a technical level. "To have all these dynamic effects and terrain, weapon systems all running simultaneously... A lot of the technology and effort has gone into that," he nods. "It means we have to have very clever audio managers and effects managers to have this kind of scale of combat on a cross-platform [title]. As part of the cross-platform delivery there's actually a lot of cross-pollination between platforms so that everybody benefits."

Indeed, PC owners with Quad Core processors and 4GB of memory will particularly benefit from the extra detail. Console owners need not fear getting a watered-down version, but PC owners can expect more expansive multiplayer options and bigger matches. It has previously been reported that the PC will feature 32 player (16 vs 16) multiplayer compared to the console's eight-player multiplayer. In both versions, however, each player will have a total of eight AI squad members fighting alongside them. In co-op terms, the PC will feature eight-player co-op, while console will be restricted to two-player co-op - so there are evidently going to be huge benefits to opting for the PC version if multiplayer is your thing.

    BERJAYA BERJAYA BERJAYA

I think it's safe to say that the consoles are now outdated tech, unable to keep with the times.

    Left 4 Dead's Face Stabs
    - BERJAYA 1 Comment
Nothing new on the Team Fortress 2 class updates front of late? No worry, the team has been helping to refine Left 4 Dead's Versus mode:

The last couple of weeks we've actually been moonlighting on Left 4 Dead. While the L4D team has been focusing on finishing up the core cooperative gameplay, we've been helping them by working on their Versus mode. Versus is the recently-announced competitive mode where one team plays the Survivors and one team plays the Infected. We've learned a lot while working on TF2 in the last year, and we were able to apply some of those lessons to Versus mode. As a result, we've just finished adding critical hits, respawn waves, flawless auto-team balancing, and facestabs to L4D, while removing anything that looked remotely like a grenade. I kid, I kid.

Now that we're wrapping up that work, we'll be returning to TF2. We've got a bunch of exciting changes coming down the pipe for the next class update. Feels good to be home again!

Sorry for the tardy update. I was playing Warhammer Online. I went with a dark elf sorc on a server that starts with Ulf something in case you're curious. It's pretty good, as far as the newby experience is concerned. The public questing system is nice and when you can get into a battleground (the queues are kinda long unless you're on a super populated server) that really speeds things up as well. And yeah, the biggest bottleneck for the BGs is getting enough people to play. The XP is like 10 times faster than doing quests and crap so it would be nice if more folks got in on that.

Oh, I finished Spore too. Well, I'm done with Spore (cough). Nothing I do in the space stage is saving and I don't want to keep doing everything over again so I'm going to call it (at least for now).

    Today's question:

Will you be playing Warhammer Online?
