Wow, I Kind of Want a PS3
it took a year and a half, but the PS3 is starting to impress me. i thought it had a very strong lineup at E3 this year. there were three games that really caught my eye.
Resistance 2
it's a fact: jeremy dunham was the only person who liked the first Resistance. but i'm a sucker for giant monsters (see: Monster-0). the sequence shown during sony's press conference totally blew me away. another part of the game i was demoed also impressed me, when hordes of skinny zombie things chased our heroes through the back alleys of an obliterated city. this game has some breathtaking vistas, and it has pwned killzone 2.
Fat Princess
i love stylized gore. this game has a lot of it. but it also has compelling multiplayer gameplay. there seems to be a lot of variety in how you can approach a battle, much like Team Fortress 2. i gotta give Sony credit for greenlighting such a quirky title.
Valkyria Chronicles
oh, you know i'm down with the strategy games. SEGA has a pretty interesting one on its hands, here. it sports great looking, water color-like visuals. Valkyria also adds new elements to the turn-based strategy genre, like free-roaming action during your turn. this isn't a grid-based tactical game like Final Fantasy Tactics. you're free to run anywhere on the map until your turn points run out. it's definitely got a quirky japanese feel that will probably turn a lot of people off. but strategy fans should look out for this one.
so i may not be able to resist the PS3 much longer.
my overall game of the show was Prince of Persia. i was so captivated by the relationship between the prince and princess elika. there was a moment during our demo when both characters slid down a wall. the prince got to the bottom first, turned around, and caught elika in his arms. the animation was so convincing and it told us so much about them, ryan geddes and i were both stunned. i can't wait to play that game.
Tomorrow Shall Be a Great Day for XBLA
omg, 1942: Joint Strike and the Puzzle Quest expansion on the same day. what did i do to deserve this? only bad thing is i leave for NY at 7am thursday and i'll be away from my 360 for five days .
in other news, i spent some time playing Clone Wars on Wii today and it's not as lame as the trailer makes it look.
My Weirdest E3 Moment
being demoed Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts alongside Nintendo's Reggie. forget the fact that Microsoft was giving a demo of a former Nintendo product to the president of Nintendo of America. what was really weird was Microsoft's Ken Lobb was acting like he didn't know who Reggie is. he was telling Reggie about the state of the platformer. you know, the guy from the company that invented the platformer and delivered one of its finest specimens last year with Mario Galaxy. this was the last day of the show so maybe Lobb was just running on auto pilot at that point. Reggie was also kind of hostile. anytime Lobb would start to explain a feature in depth, Reggie would say "yeah, yeah" and dismiss Lobb with a wave of his hand. it was rather surreal.
in other news: e3 S U C K E D for nintendo fans. it is time to abandon ship. nintendo is no longer making games for us. it's making games for our grandmas and baby sisters. move along, there is nothing to see here.
You Know Who's Awesome?
Casey Affleck
i watched both Gone Baby Gone and The Assassination of Jesse James this week, and man, affleck is great in both films. he's one of the best actors working today. i was really impressed with his range, from a private investigator struggling to earn respect and deal with his convictions in GBG to the awkward, envious Robert Ford in Jesse James.
both movies are pretty good, but Gone Baby Gone is the better of the two. Jesse James is beautifully shot, and i'm always down with brad pitt, but it's a little slow.
In Defense of Shorter Reviews
i reviewed Final Fantasy Tactics A2 yesterday, and the fragile hearts of the internet are outraged once again because it's (gasp) only one page long. there really is no pleasing some people. even if they agree with the review score, they'll complain that i didn't drone on and on for ten pages to appease their thirst for nerdiness.
i try to keep all my reviews around one page. that is plenty of space to describe a game and tell you whether or not i think it's good. as a whole, i think videogame reviews tend to be too long. this is the internet, and i want to get my information quickly. usually the score and closing comments tell me all i need to know. i'm actually a big fan of The Onion's game reviews.
in the case of FF Tactics A2, it's not like there was an entirely new gameplay experience that needed describing. this is the same game we've all played before. it's awesome, but it's nothing new. and we'd already written three previews on the thing. i described the major features of the game, explained why i liked it, and commented on the one thing that bugged me about it. sure, i could have gushed for a few more pages about every little detail, but part of being a good writer is being efficient with your words. (and let me just save the smart ass in the back row there the trouble: "isn't part of being a good writer using proper capitalization?" wow, you're brilliant.)
besides, wouldn't you rather be playing the game than reading about it? you don't need a scientific analysis trying to explain that the ability to barter items at the bazaar in FFTA2 is giving us new insight into the human experience. these are games, people. don't take 'em so seriously.
