The Oddness of an Empty DVR
I can count on one hand the number of times my DVR has been empty in the past -- and this is one of them. There's something a little unsettling about having nothing recorded to watch on your DVR after having 30+ hours on it for about 9 months straight, always on the brink of being completely full. Without something on the DVR, one can turn to a Netflix or a DVD from your home collection, without any guilt (as in "oh man, I should really get caught up on this show before I watch a DVD"). But it still feels odd to not have loads of entertainment options at the touch of a button.
I know this feeling of oddness will be very short-lived -- it's the start of the fall season and I have five hours of programming recording tonight -- but I feel I must savor it since it likely won't happen again until summer.
Stuff I've Watched & Wanna Watch
RECENT VIEWINGS:
The Colbert Report: Colbert's perfected his O'Reilly-esque personality and delivers laughs on a nightly basis. This Monday's episode with guest Amy Sedaris was hilarious, as it was punctuated by Amy, Steven and "Tad" (fellow Strangers with Candy alum Paul Dinello) tumblecizing.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest: Finally got a chance to see this on Wednesday. It was very... meh. Entertaining action sequences but a totally confusing plot that didn't have the fun and breeziness of the original. And the ending was very Back to the Future: Part II.
Squirrel Boy: Entertaining new Cartoon Network original to watch with your kids. Check out my review.
THINGS I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO:
Who Wants to Be a Superhero?: An amusing looking SCI FI Channel reality series. The creative consultant for the show, comic artist Matt Haley, is doing his own blog for IGN, so be sure to check it out.
Eureka: Another SCI FI Channel show. This one starts up on Tuesday. I like the the concept and the commercials I've seen thus far, and our own Jason Van Horn's advance review is positive, so I'm definitely looking forward to it.
A Scanner Darkly: I'm not sure when it's getting around to my area of the world, but I definitely want to check it out when it does. IGN FilmForce has the first 24 minutes online -- I'll have to find sometime today to check it out.
Snakes on a Plane: They're snakes, and they're on a motherf***in' plane. 'Nuff said.
Prison Broke
I used to really enjoy Prison Break. It was great, high-concept, escapist (literally) entertainment. Last night's season finale was extremely disappointing, though -- to the point that I felt the show was insulting the viewers' intelligence, and I'm not even looking forward to next season. You can read more in my full review of the episode.
For those of you who haven't seen it yet, IGN TV is up and running, in Beta form. Not everything's active yet, lots more shows need to be fleshed out, but we're doing daily updates and launching a bunch of recurring features. Two of those recurring features are The Must Watch List and What to Watch. The Must Watch List currently has a total of 25 shows that we think are worth watching. Prison Break is currently on there, but I think in the next edition of the Must Watch List, it'll be gone. You can check out our What to Watch feature for a daily rundown of what's on TV each night.
We've got a lot of big stuff planned in the near future -- right now, IGN TV's Eric Goldman is in NYC, covering the network upfronts -- the presentations to advertisers where networks reveal their upcoming fall schedules. We'll have a ton of coverage from that in the coming days, including reactions to clips, interviews, and more. Let us know what you think!
IGN TV-ness
The launch of IGN TV is now mere days away. If this were an episode of 24, the clock would be ticking, while images of IGN editors diligently worked at their computers. Editors typing in data, writing articles, and uploading graphics. That'd be the most boring episode of 24 ever. Unless the IGN offices were suddenly under terrorist attack, in which case I'd want a new job. I don't actually want danger or adrenaline-pumping events happening in my life. I'd rather just watch TV and work on a website... which brings us back to IGN TV.
We've got a lot of big things planned for the site, from big features and interviews to upfront coverage and set visits. TV.ign.com. Tell your friends and family. Remember it. Bookmark it. Make it your new home page. Start a blog about it. Devote yourself 24/7 to it. Love it. Or at least just check it out when it's ready. Please.
IGN TV Cometh
A new IGN channel is on its way, covering all things television: IGN TV. Over the past couple months I've been moving from my previous position of Editor-in-Chief of IGN FilmForce to EIC of IGN TV. We've been putting together some really cool content for some great shows, some of which you've already seen running on IGN FilmForce, such as my Prison Break set visit, Stax's in-home visit for Heist, and various reviews by IGN TV's new full-time staff writer Eric Goldman, including South Park's season premiere, The Shield's season finale and the Sci Fi Channel miniseries Dark Kingdom: The Dragon King.
Once IGN TV launches on April 25, the features and reviews will be flowing freely and we'll be covering as much TV as we can possibly watch. Have a favorite show you want us to cover? Like our articles so far? Think the articles and our taste in shows suck? Send us a note at tv_mail@ign.com and let us know.
Until the launch, check our blogs, read the content that pops up on IGN FilmForce, and let us know exactly what you want us to do more, or less, of.
