Act of War Interview 08:36 pm

Computer&VideoGames; have whipped up an interview on Act of War: Direct Action, from Atari. Check it:What does Act of War bring to the table to revitalise the genre?
Alexis le Dressay: It's important to respect the strengths of the genre and not confuse the player with irrelevant features, but a distinctly unique thing with Act of War: Direct Action is the focus on realism, mainly of course in the graphics department. There is no reason why an RTS game shouldn't be as visually pleasing and realistic as an FPS, or as entertaining or easy to get into. That's why for example, the whole game is to scale and we've spent a tremendous effort on detailed representations of real cities, such as San Francisco, Washington D.C. and London.

GameSpot have slapped up a preview of SWAT 4, from Irrational Games. Here's a cut: The single-player campaign will be fairly easy to get into. After a quick tutorial that will get you up to speed with all the latest SWAT gear, including weapons, non-lethal grenades, breaching charges, and an optical camera that lets you peek around corners, you'll dive into your first mission. At the beginning of each mission, you'll be given a briefing of the tactical situation and some background information on the suspect or suspects, as well as the opportunity to listen to the initial 911 call, if one was made. This can provide valuable information as to what to expect inside. You'll also be given the best available map of the premises (anything from a quick sketch to detailed schematics, depending on the location), as well as a choice of possible entries into the property. For example, you may want to send your team through the front door, or you can try sneaking in through the back. You'll also receive mug shots, sketches, or photos, if they're available of the suspects, as well as any civilians known to be inside, though in some situations that information is unknown and unavailable.

PC.IGN have slapped up part two of their multiplayer preview on Brothers in Arms. Here's a slice: You are outgunned and outnumbered, and the enemy knows where the Explosives are. It might seem hopeless, but you have a sniper rifle. Use it. Keep your distance, and pick off the enemy from afar. When the Mission begins, immediately move to the nearest possible Explosives location. You might get lucky and turn the tide. Once you have Explosives, the Germans will be forced to retreat to defend the well lit bridge. Now is the time to snipe. Remember, there are TWO bridge supports, and you can win by destroying either one.

IGN interviewed former LucasArts legend Tim Schafer about Psychonauts:
IGN: The game's great, it's inventive, and it did take negative three days to make. So why the hell did Microsoft cut the project?
TS: Before we were with Majesco we were with Microsoft. When they first started out with the Xbox, there was a big push for our kind of game -- a non-traditional, ground-breaking kind of game. We wanted to do something that would be a milestone, [that] would change things. They were into that then. They had some changeover and a lot of games didn't fit what they wanted to do anymore. Majesco stepped up and said, "This is exactly the kind of game that we want to make." So, they've been really supportive and great about it.

CNN's Game Over column spoke with Sony America's CEO who reveals that the decision to release only Value Packs is so that the PSP can differientiate itself from the competition by appearing to do more than just play games. Here's Kaz on PSP-PS2 link-ups:
"That's going to really depend on the software application," he said. "There's talk now in our internal studios that you'd want to buy both [versions]...where, for example, you're playing a particular game at home, say 'SOCOM' and you clear certain levels, then you transport that data to your PSP, then play some when you're out and transport that progress back to your PS2. It would be a seamlessly integrated portable and full console game. ...I think there's the potential to double revenue."

In addition to the revolutionary PSP hardware, the PSP Value Pack contains an unprecedented added-value package of accessories and entertainment content, including 32 MB Memory Stick Duo(TM), headphones with remote control, battery pack, AC adaptor, soft case and cleaning cloth, movie/music/game video sampler UMD disc including multiple non-interactive game demos, and for the first one million PSP Value Packs shipped, a special UMD video release of the feature film Spider-Man 2 from Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Kinda sucks UPN axed Enterprise; to be honest I wasn't a big follower of the series, although I was starting to actually watch it on a weekly basis this past season. That guy from Quantum Leap made a pretty good Captain too. :( One of the biggest pet peeves I had about Enterprise was that it was set before the original series, yet the technology they used seemed more advanced. Not just the way it looked from a cosmetic standpoint (not that I was expecting some 60's retro design) but that always bugged the crap out of me. Since we're sharing a Star Trek moment, today's question is: Best Star Trek game?
