Hogwarts Legacy is a game that looks great on the surface, but the overall experience ends up feeling pretty disappointing.

The open world is visually impressive at first, but it quickly starts to feel empty and repetitive. Outside of the main areas, there isn’t much variety, and a lot of activities feel copy-pasted.

The gameplay also lacks depth. Combat is flashy at first, but it becomes repetitive over time, and there isn’t enough variety to keep it interesting long-term.

The story and characters are another major weak point. The characters feel poorly written, and I had zero emotional connection to them throughout the game, which makes it hard to care about what’s happening.

Overall, Hogwarts Legacy feels like a missed opportunity. It has a strong setting, but the repetitive gameplay and weak writing make it hard to stay engaged.

I've had my Steam account for over two decades, and in all that time I've only written one other review. I generally don't bother. Most games reveal what they are fairly quickly, the community reaches a consensus, and I move on.

Hogwarts Legacy is one of the few games that left me disappointed enough to actually sit down and write something.

The frustrating part is that the game isn't bad. In fact, the first several hours are excellent. Walking through Hogwarts for the first time genuinely feels magical. The castle is visually stunning, the atmosphere is strong, and for a brief moment it feels like the Harry Potter game fans have been waiting for.

Then the illusion starts to wear off.

The best way I can describe Hogwarts Legacy is that it looks like a beautiful onion. Every layer appears impressive, but the deeper you cut, the more you realize there's nothing at the center.

The story is serviceable but forgettable. Rather than telling a unique story within the Wizarding World, it relies heavily on familiar "chosen one" tropes and rarely takes any creative risks. I kept waiting for the narrative to surprise me, but it never really did.

More disappointing is how little the game supports the fantasy it advertises. You're supposed to be a student at Hogwarts, yet your choices barely matter, your relationships barely matter, and your actions carry almost no meaningful consequences. The game constantly tells you who you are supposed to be, but the systems never reinforce it.

The open world suffers from the same problem. It is enormous, beautiful, and filled with things to collect, yet very little of it feels meaningful. After a while I wasn't discovering anything interesting; I was simply clearing icons off a map. What initially felt like exploration gradually became a checklist.

There were also numerous immersion-breaking moments that repeatedly pulled me out of the experience. Some came from lore inconsistencies, others from character presentation and dialogue, but together they created a constant feeling that the game was more concerned with presenting the Wizarding World than understanding why people loved it in the first place.

That's ultimately my biggest criticism.

Hogwarts Legacy successfully recreates the appearance of Harry Potter. It recreates the architecture, the clothing, the spells, the music, and the imagery. What it struggles to recreate is the sense of wonder, consequence, discovery, and character that made the world memorable.

By the end, I realized I was exploring a world I loved rather than playing a game I loved.

For some people, that will be enough. It wasn't enough for me.

Hogwarts Professors: "The Unforgivable Curses are an absolute abomination and using them will result in immediate expulsion!"
Also me: Levitating a poacher into the air, freezing them solid, and then shattering them into a thousand pieces with Diffindo before heading to Herbology class.
You do not even need to be a die hard Harry Potter fan to appreciate what an absolute achievement this game is. Though if you did grow up with the books or movies walking into the Great Hall or seeing the common rooms for the first time will genuinely give you goosebumps. It captures the pure magic of the universe in a way no game before it has ever managed.

The developers clearly poured an immense amount of love and reverence into designing the environment. The castle itself is a masterpiece, it's absolutely packed with moving portraits, hidden rooms and secrets! I spent my first several hours just wandering the corridors and taking in the atmosphere. Hogsmeade feels equally alive, bustling with chatter and backed by a phenomenal soundtrack that perfectly echoes the whimsical energy of the films.

The open world is vast and visually stunning and getting around is a blast. The broom controls are incredibly smooth and snappy to the point where flying mounts feel almost entirely redundant because the broom is just so much faster to mount and dismount.


Where the game unexpectedly excels is the spellcasting sandbox, the combat is fast, fluid and surprisingly deep. Stringing together combos like pulling an enemy close with Accio, lighting them on fire with Incendio and blasting them off a cliff with Depulso never gets old honestly. You also have access to potions and combat plants like the Chinese Chomping Cabbages (which are essentially 50% vegetable and 50% teeth) that can tear through encounters for you.

The game leans heavily into making you a one-wizard army. It’s definitely more of a beautiful relaxing journey than a brutal mountain climb; the game is very generous with its dodge-roll i-frames, and once you unlock your core talents, you will absolutely wreck anything in your path.


However, for all its magic the game does struggle to maintain that same momentum once you step away from the castle gates. The outer regions of the map feel a bit bloated and repetitive, eventually turning into a checklist of spider caves, bandit camps, and far too many Merlin trials.

There is also a noticeable lack of true "student life" mechanics. For a school setting the absence of curfews or any consequences for sneaking around at night feels like a missed opportunity... you can literally break into a faculty member's bedroom at 3 AM to steal a collectible while they sleep. Aside from standout companions like Sebastian and Poppy, most of the side characters feel a bit flat. They treat the protagonist as a blank-slate self-insert, resulting in a lot of "hello mysterious fifth-year friend" dialogue rather than meaningful relationships. I really hope the inevitable sequel takes notes from games like Bully, where attending scheduled classes actually rewards you with unique gameplay perks and mechanics.
A quick heads-up on optimization: the graphics are gorgeous, BUT the game is incredibly demanding on hardware. If you are running an 8GB VRAM card like an RTX 3070, turning on RTX will absolutely tank your performance... and cause heavy stuttering. Keep the settings reasonable and it runs beautifully, but it definitely eats up resources.


Even with the repetitive late-game collectible grind and the slightly hollow outer map, the sheer joy of exploring Hogwarts and blasting dark wizards out of the sky makes this a must-play. It lays a phenomenal foundation for the future of the franchise.
At the end of the day I highly recommend playing it. 8.8/10 from a slytherin, would transfigure a goblin into an explosive barrel and throw him at his friends again.
