What tropes are an instant "nope" for you? by Ambitious_Support_76 in FanFiction

[–]justduck [score hidden]  (0 children)

I've kind of run out of fics in my OTP and OT3, and have been thinking of going back to Gotham to see what's cropped up since 2021 when I kind of moved over. My problem is I love superheroes, but I've got these OCD tendencies that make it damn near impossible to just jump in to reading the canon comics. I am very much a chronological reader, which you really can't be for things like Batman and Captain America. So all my fandom knowledge and headcanon is off the TV and movie stuff, and I find with DC, they haven't had anywhere near the opportunity to flesh out the DC Universe and get me familiar with characters that show up in many fics.

I'm working on mine right now (well...not right now) and I am 110% same sitch with "how tf did I let it get this bad". Its hard enough to clean when you're not in the midst of a depressive episode, but a mountain of shit piling up, and my room smelling because I haven't been able to vacuum since ?? KEEP AT IT. It's going to feel so good when we're done.

Mpreg is 100% a squick of mine.

I read Marvel primarily, and "no-powers" is lame. I'm also not big on time-traveling (big segment of Captain America fics). Mostly because I'm something of a history buff on the interwar and WWII eras, and incorrect bits jolt me out of the story. I also tend to avoid OC main characters/love interests, high school, and "AU coffee shop" (I really don't get that last one)

Is it just me, or are people extra oblivious and disrespectful at Costco than at other places? by redflower5 in NoStupidQuestions

The product of decades of "rugged individualism" propaganda. The U.S. is a society of "Me" not "We". 'Tis better for 50 people to be inconvenienced than for me to be inconvenienced.

Trader Joes is worse. People I know who are normally very self-aware/respectful just seem to leave their bodies when entering the parking lot. They act like they are the only people in the store - until they see a friend, and they both park in the middle of everything to catch up for a half hour.

Is paying 500 dollars normal for a towing release fee? by United_Cricket_4991 in AskLosAngeles

Sadly, that's a low fee. I know places that charge $280 for the pickup, and then $350/day storage.

how do i deal with earthquake trauma? by Silent-Bat8006 in Earthquakes

[–]justduck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Growing up in Southern California, I went through some M5 and M6, and I had the same problem. Something I've done to help with the anxiety - that I didn't realize was a coping thing - is that I have created a kickass earthquake kit for the next big one. My therapist said it's probably so I know that no matter how upset I am, I won't have to worry about food/shelter/meds/etc. The shaking will be scary, but I'll be OK. Another thing I have done since I was little is that every time I enter a room, I immediately identify where I will go if the earth starts shaking.

I've taken it a step further in recent years and have learned some emergency skills so I can help my neighbors afterwards. If I am busy, I can't worry. So now I know basic urban search and rescue things, like what to look, listen, and smell for (natural gas) when looking for people, when you shouldn't move a person without a cervical collar, where to find major water and gas valves, and how to turn them off, etc. etc.

As for the day to day anxieties (my area hasn't had a major quake within 50 miles since 1994) - I really struggle sometimes. Especially when we have a minor quake and I'm anxious that it is just a foreshock. I knit, and so picking up my knitting and getting into a rhythm helps my heart rate and blood pressure. Music or an audiobook sometimes helps distract.

I'm sorry you're going through this and wish I could give you a hug

Am I weird for the way I shower? by Outrageous-Answer233 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]justduck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was raised to wet your toothbrush, and then turn off the water while brushing. Now when I see people just leaving the taps open on TV and movies, it makes me frustrated/anxious. "You're wasting waaaater!!!"

[–]justduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are Navy showers, and more people in my area (SoCal) should be doing it. I'm guilty of just letting it run (and then standing there disassociating...) but to save water I try to shut off in between steps. Besides, what good is sudsing up when it's instantly washed off from side spray?

If you were living in a city and you had info that a nuclear bomb was going to be dropped on that city, but you didn’t have time to leave and you didn’t own a bunker, what would be the best way to survive? by Wonderful-Ad-9622 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]justduck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There have been times I wished I lived closer to the heart of LA, not because of all the fun stuff but because I'd rather get vaporized in an attack instead of the slow suffering. Reality is that it's more likely going to be a "dirty bomb" that takes out LA/SoCal than an ICBM nuke, though. So fucked either way

[–]justduck 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are going to have aftershocks for YEARS with something that size. Not as often as you are feeling them now, but occasionally. As for tsunami, it depends on where the fault ruptured. (I haven't had a chance to read up on the geology of the event) The largest tend to be from subduction faults under the water. (Sendai, 2011)

How safe is this area? by noname478855 in Pomona

[–]justduck 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't live in that area, but what I can tell you about Pomona is that things change block to block. My block is super chill, little drama, no porch pirates. But if you go the next block over, it's a bit more rough, and two blocks away, a couple houses have bars on the windows and there are ragers until 2am at least once a month. Do you have an opportunity to go over there during the week and again on a weekend and just walk around? Get a sense of the vibe, maybe?

7.8 Magnitude Earthquake hits, caught on CCTV by Cultural-Ball4700 in Earthquakes

[–]justduck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not a literal one, but geologists researching previous quakes (digging through strata at an exposed fault line,.for instance) can give a general range on how often a plate slips. And based on elastic rebound theory, the longer between slips, the larger the quake. I'm hoping the minor ones we have in SoCal in the past 32 years have just meant there isn't a HUGE amount of stress built up
