Nice weather keeps poking its head around the corner, and I can’t wait. Summer is my favorite time of year!
Just as my free community farm stand was getting some momentum, my HOA claimed it violated our community rules (it doesn’t, confirmed with a laywer). A neighbor even came over and yelled at me for “not asking my neighbors first” before choosing to feed people on my own property.
Someone was able to call in some favors with our 100% Republican-led local government, who misrepesented some local zoning bylaws to forcibly shut me down. They are also working hard to prevent the community fridge from getting started.
I’m fighting all of it. I will not let bullies win.
But it also caused me to massive rethink my priorities and where we’re at in life. Feeding people shouldn’t be controversial. Human rights shouldn’t be controversial.
Fighting for the dignity and well-being of the most vulnerable is important work… but it’s draining AF, and sucks up massive amounts of energy that could be used to actually help people.
We live in a small rural farm town, which means you have to drive 20 minutes to get anywhere. And I’m just so tired of all of it.
So, we’ve decided to move to coastal RI. I yearn to be near the ocean. I want to be able to walk or bike places, and be less dependent on a car. I want to be in a community where my time and energy are amplified for good.
I’m tired, y’all. And I’m ready for a change.
