Development History[]
In 2020, Fortnite's UI was a mess. The interface was built on components that were heavily interlinked with Fortnite: Save The World, causing unexpected interactions and behaviour. The UI engineers were having to pull frequent all-nighters and make 'one-off' buttons, resulting in a huge technical debt.
In late 2020, development began on building a new UI framework from scratch in order to fix many of the aforementioned issues. The new framework was designed with the Metaverse in mind, allowing a seamless transition between each mode and its distinct UI. The initial project was completed in late 2023 with the launch of Chapter 5, with elements slowly being updated to use Rift UI.
