Join us for an evening of talks in collaboration with Backbase , exploring what it really means to do design work under pressure, across contexts, and at scale. Phil Barrett, Senior Design Manager at Backbase, shares notes from the middle of a complex problem, looking at what an AI design process looks like when the software actually has to work. Gal Agmon from Red Cross Netherlands dives into product design in humanitarian aid contexts - from field observation to Figma Make prototypes. Bo Liu from Miro shares how their team shaped strategy and kept delivery moving through a major platform shift. Join the Figma and Claude San Diego communities for a design show & tell focused on how AI is actually being used in the design process. Claude Community Events are hosted globally to bring together people building with Claude to share solutions, help each other, and push the boundaries of what’s possible with AI. This session is about learning by seeing and sharing. Some people will walk through how they’re using Figma + Claude in their workflow. AI is not the future: That future is already here. As AI reforms the modern world. what role should it play in civic service delivery? With AI's full power within relatively few hands, is ethical AI possible now? This talk shares the State of Maryland's approach to AI across policy, programs, and products. From our first roadmap outlining Maryland's approach to the scalable systems that guide our AI implementation, you will learn how to build AI tools in civic tech contexts that puts service to the people at the heart of our efforts. About the Speaker Lauren Maffeo is the Senior Program Manager of AI/ML at the State of Maryland, where she helps state agencies responsibly and productively adopt GenAI to solve problems faced by their staff and constituents. She leads the State's AI Innovation Lab, Community of Practice, co-wrote the first statewide guidance to use AI coding assistants, and led the launch of AI.Maryland.gov . She previously led service design efforts in the Coast Guard’s first Chief Data and AI Office, and co-led product on the founding Digital Service team at Maryland’s Department of Labor. Lauren’s first book, “Designing Data Governance from the Ground Up,” was published by The Pragmatic Programmers, and she was named a 2025 Rising Civic AI Leader by the Aspen Policy Academy. She serves on the Board of Directors for AIGA DC, alongside serving on The London School of Economics and Political Science's Global Alumni Board. Workshop: An Intro to Figma + Claude Code This is a beginner-friendly introduction to a modern, AI-augmented design workflow, no coding or terminal experience required. We’ll explore how Claude Code connects directly to Figma, letting you move faster from idea to screen without the guesswork of traditional design-to-development handoff. Using a simple MCP (Model Context Protocol) connection, Claude can read your actual Figma files components, layout, color tokens, and more and respond to plain-language prompts. Ask it to describe your design, generate CSS that matches your specs, or scaffold a new layout from scratch. You stay in the designer’s seat; Claude handles the translation work. The session wraps with a hands-on workshop where you’ll build a simple mobile app home screen, using AI to scaffold the structure while you make the design decisions.
