Building a business isn't just strategy and success stories

It’s late nights, self-doubt, and the mental load no-one talks about.

This podcast dives into the emotional side of entrepreneurship: the mindset, the burnout.
And the unfiltered truth behind the grind. Because you’re not alone – and it’s time we talked about it.

From Diagnosed Dyslexic to a Multi-Million Property Portfolio: James Martin’s Raw Entrepreneurial Journey

"“I’ve done it all unread!”"

“I’ve done it all unread. I couldn’t read the forms or the HR paperwork, so I had no choice but to surround myself with really good people early on. I felt constantly out of my depth and that fear of failure became my driver. I learned by being around others, watching how they worked, and building relationships instead of sitting in classrooms. I was kicked out of school and college, sold my first business too cheaply, bought it back, and rebuilt it stronger. Everything I’ve built has come from grit, insecurity, and believing that everything is possible.”

Starting Again After Early Success: Digital Agency Owner Danny Hall on Building a Business With No Plan

"“I’ve always been a grafter.”"

“You couldn’t have gone more to rock bottom. In fact, I think I started lower than what I was when I started originally. I’d had a family, I bought a home, all these things you never thought you could do. And all of a sudden you’re literally in a bedsit. I remember I was genuinely living on around ten to fifteen pound a week. I can still remember what my shopping list was. It was frozen chips, eggs and packs of ham. And that was it.”

From Self-Employed to Business Owner: Building a Wealth Management Firm | James Melhuish

"“I didn't get on with being employed.”"

“I went from being self-employed to realising that wasn’t enough. I didn’t think we’d ever get regulated, and at times it felt like everything was stacked against us. The pressure of keeping a co-director engaged, building something credible, and not letting people down was huge. What really drove me was that sense of responsibility — knowing people were relying on me. That’s when it stopped being about just doing the work and became about building something that could actually last.”

Dyslexia, Doubt and a Doctorate: Dr Alison Edgar’s Raw Journey as an Author and Speaker

"“I’m still at base camp.”"

“I was diagnosed dyslexic when I was in my late 20s, early 30s. I’ve always really struggled reading, writing, spelling, anything with that sort of space. And at school, I was basically told, oh, you’re not trying hard enough, you’re not doing this enough. So that then teaches the voice in your brain to say, you’re really stupid, you’re really thick, you can’t read, you can’t write, you couldn’t write a book because who’s going to read it? And if they do read it, they’re going to think it’s rubbish. So you hold yourself back in lots of different ways.”
