Climate in Rome throughout the year
Rome enjoys a Mediterranean climate with long warm, beautiful days in the spring and summer. May and June average a more pleasant 18-22°C with little rainfall in these spring and early summer months. The city enjoys long days, typically a good eight to ten hours of sunshine a day in the summer months, while winter temperatures generally hover around 8 to 10°C, in around five hours of daylight. While there is typically little if any rain in the summer, winter in this climate can see on average fourteen wet days per month.

Best time to visit Rome
As the long hot days of August are the peak time for Italians to take their vacation, Rome can become extremely busy during these weeks. Add to this the frequently very hot weather, and the inevitable price hike that comes with a city on holiday, and August is possibly not the best time to visit the city. Late spring or early summer are a much better choice; the weather is warm but not impossibly hot and anytime before July will be off season in terms of tourism and therefore considerably cheaper. Early autumn too will see prices coming back down and temperatures in September and even October are still pleasant. Attraction opening times should be checked in advance though, as many will close for the winter months.
Rome: Things to see & Things to do
As the capital city of Italy, Rome has a well-deserved reputation as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Situated in the centre of the country, it has an intoxicating mix of historic wonders and a fabulously vibrant contemporary culture. Visitors to this iconic city can enjoy world famous museums, legendary architecture and possibly some of the best dining experiences to be found anywhere on the planet. Rome is one of the largest yet most seductive cities in the western world, where sightseeing can be combined with strolling in the piazzas, stopping for an al fresco coffee, shopping for cutting edge fashion and pausing to soak up the atmosphere of ancient statues and fountains. It has good transport links, being well served by two airports and good networks of buses, trams, metro and trains. All this means Rome has a thriving tourism industry and as such can be extremely busy at certain times of the year; worth bearing in mind before making travel plans.
Rome is bursting with places to visit, and some prior planning would be of great benefit to optimise a trip. It is also worth investigating buying options for attraction tickets as some will cover entrance to more than one destination. As with any busy metropolis it should be noted that Rome has its fair share of pickpockets and scammers to take advantage of its visitors and Tourists are advised to be vigilant in crowded areas.
The Colosseum must be high on the list of sites to visit and a full day is needed to do it justice. The huge amphitheatre was constructed to hold gladiatorial spectacles for the entertainment of the Emperor and the subjects of Rome. The opening games in AD 80 continued for 100 days and nights, with the crowds at such events seated in tiered rows encircling the arena floor with a vast canvas awning above their heads. Below ground level, gladiators and animals waited within a network of chambers and tunnels, known as the hypogeum, before emerging to fight to the death. Separate tickets are available for the arena itself and for the underground passageways, both are well worth the entrance fees.
Another major destination not to be missed is the Vatican, home to the Pope and the Catholic Church. The papal palaces house the museums where many treasures can be viewed including the Sistine Chapel. St. Peter's Basilica, with its huge, iconic dome is also located within the independent state.
For a shorter excursion, the spectacular Baroque Trevi Fountain is an iconic landmark of Rome, having famously appeared in several Hollywood films. According to legend, throw coins into the fountain and you will be sure to someday return to the city. Completed in 1762, the fountain is massive, overflowing with sculpture, and is a tribute to water in all its forms. North of the Fountain, and a rival for its film star status are the Spanish Steps, so called as they led from the Spanish Embassy up 135 steps to the beautiful church of Trinita dei Monti. The staircase is a traditional meeting place in the heart of the city, and a perfect place to immerse yourself in the wonders of this most romantic of cities.
