| The Cusabo were a sedentary coastal hunter/farmer nation. They occupied the southernmost part of South Carolina between Charleston Harbor and the Savannah River. They suffered severely from White conflicts before confederating with Creeks. |

| 1562 | Ribault established a colony at Port Royal, soon abandoned |
| 1564 | Huguenot colony established on St. Johns River, Florida |
| 1565 | Colony destroyed by Spanish, but rebuilt and named Fort San Felipe |
