Follow the Chronicle of events! Erik_Schubach Posted: 2012-02-09 11:09:15 Updated: 2012-02-09 11:10:14 Most of my life, I have not been one to like movies shot from the point of view of the character's hand held camera.
This has been punctuated to me over and over by the gawd-awful movies such as the Blair Witch Project and other films of the like. But this aversion to them has been slowly changing with some of the more recent movies that have turned it into an art.
The two that come quickly to mind are Cloverfield, which I loved and now Chronicle.
Last weekend, my brother asked me if I had seen Chronicle and I told him I had not, which I thought was odd since I live and breathe movies and TV (this is a reflection on the poor job the studio did of advertising it). So he brought me to a showing and I was quite pleased with the story and the method of which it was filmed... through the point of view of many cameras from different individuals stitched together to tell the story.
The movie is about three boys who stumble upon something alien in a sinkhole. They discover that the encounter has given them telekinetic powers, and the film follows them as they learn to use the powers and become stronger.
There are some cool realization scenes and awesome sequences where they learn to fly using the powers. But power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Circumstances conspire against one of them that slowly turns him from a nice kid into an apex predator... chipping away at his humanity one piece at a time until the others have to stop him.
There is plenty of action, coupled with a good storyline, that will keep you interested and you will find that you forget that it is being shown through their camera lens. Erik_Schubach Posted: 2012-01-05 10:41:04 Updated: 2012-01-30 15:56:02 In the past few years I have been aware of a geek show called the Big Bang Theory and have caught a couple episodes here and there but I didn't know the storyline and was unfamiliar with the characters. So I never gave the show much mind.
But recently they have had a Big Bang marathon on a cable station that had the first few episodes. I watched from the beginning and suddenly the various episodes I had watched in the past, snapped into focus. Now I had the back-story and those episodes became that much funnier to me.
I decided that this was one of my favorite modern comedies at that time. Since I had a couple weeks off for the holidays, I went out and bought all of the seasons of the show and had a mega-marathon of my own... catching me up to the current season.
I don't think I have laughed so much in years. Not only is the humor precise, but the delivery and chemistry of the actors is amazing.
Sheldon has to be one of the best characters EVER, with his deadpan delivery and robot-like personality.
But the show seriously wouldn't work without Penny. She is the character that ties the uber-geniuses to the common people. She introduces many "muggles" into the group dynamic and we can see the awkward social interaction that these scientists have with "real" people.
If you have some time and want a good snicker and love sarcasm, I would recommend giving The Big Bang Theory a try. Erik_Schubach Posted: 2011-07-25 16:17:45 When I was growing up, Captain America was one of the few heroes that fostered patriotism as well as the awe of superheroes that made kids like me stand up and take notice. So It was a no brainier that I would like any show that came out with him in it right?
WRONG! In 1979 I was excited when a Captain America TV Movie was announced. I mean, how cool was that? Then the reality set in when I had to suffer through one of the worst movies I had ever seen in my young life.
They destroyed the mythos of the character, not to mention that the costume and motorcycle looked like something from a Mattel toy line. I walked away from the livingroom after the show shaking my head and thinking I would have been better off if I had not seen it.
But then months later in 1979 they had a chance for redemption, for another Captain America TV movie was going to air! I thought this would give them the chance to fix everything and pay homage to the hero the way it should.
But alas, I believe I may have actually threw up in my mouth a little when I watched that one... how could it have been even worse than the first one? Were they doing this on purpose? Did the film house have a vendetta against the star spangled crusader?
Then in 1990 I was still scarred from viewing the two previous Captain America movies (I doubt the psychological damage can ever be repaired)... another Captain America film was released. I swear they just found an old screenplay from the previous attempts in the trash and just made that. I swore I would never fall for the hype of another Captain America film... I couldn't stand the disappointment.
Fast forward to 2011, and the release of Captain America: The First Avenger. I swear I died a little inside when I heard they were making it... already lumping it in with the other attempts. I quickly dismissed it, I mean, apparently it is impossible to make a good Captain America movie. Right?
WRONG! (I should be used to being wrong by now) I saw the trailer to the movie about 3 weeks before it was released. The effects looked good and the portions of the plot that pertined to his origin were pretty darn close to the comics. WTF? Could I be wrong? Did they actually do it right this time?
So I broke my solemn vow and went to an early showing of the movie and... WOW... Just wow! They nailed it!
Finally there he was on the silver screen, larger than life! The special effects the storyline, the cinematography. Spot on. And the character development and the actor they got to play him were just about a perfect as you could ask for.
Well I know what else you could ask for... the shield! Once again, for this iconic piece of Captain America's persona, they couldn't have done better if they tried.
So do I recommend this movie to all comic book geeks and scifi nuts? Absolutely! I give this one 3-1/2 thumbs up. (Hey, where did I get an extra 1/2 thumb?) [ Login or Signup to Leave Comments ]
