Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2025The first disc is a selection from different concerts, but the second disc is woth the price alone.
It used to be out as The Great Show of Nina Simone, Live From Paris.
Great sound and a great performance.

LIVE performances of Simone over 22 year period good but too many pop songs for me.
Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2021This is one of two double CD sets that BMG released culled from live performances at the Annual Montreux (Switzerland) Jazz Fest going back to the late 1960s. Festival Founder Claude Nobs was not only a huge jazz fan but he wanted the performances preserved and in 2007 set up a foundation to create a digital archive. (Nobs died in 2013).
Over the years there have been DVD releases (mostly from Eagle Rock Entertainment), but now come these “deluxe” packages. Similar sets from Nina Simone and Etta James were released the same day. I’ve been listening to both and love each one. In both cases there is one CD with songs from a half-dozen festivals and a second disc with a full concert. Of course, all were recorded LIVE and you can hear the audience reactions.
The Simone set differs from the James set in the fact that a few of the songs on Disc One are repeated on Disc Two. (“See-Line Woman”, Backlash Blues” and one of her standards, Billy Taylor’s “I wish I Knew How it Would Feel To be Free”), Also, the song most associated with Simone – her protest piece “Mississippi Goddam” – is nowhere to be found among the 29 tracks. What we do get are a lot of pop “cover” songs: “The House of the Rising Sun” (Rolling Stones), “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” (The Animals) and TWO songs by The Bee Gees!
The excerpted performances come from was early as 1976 and as late at 1990. The full concert is from 1968, so there is a range of 22 years on this set.
Nobs was a musician too and often sat in with the band or accompanied the artists. The recording of “Montreux Blues” on the first disc (from July 1981) has just Simone at the piano and Nobs on harmonica, a fine performance of improvisation by both.
Simone’s introductions to the songs are included the sound quality as well is – well – superb! With my headphones on, and my eyes closed, I felt I was there!
Both sets (and I assume more are coming) are 5x5-inch hardbound books with the discs inserted both front and back, with 12 pages in between with all personnel, a bit about the Nobs Foundation and an essay by Stevie Chick.
I enjoyed this set – as I love Simone – but the inclusion of the pop songs and the repeated tracks made me drop my rating on this one to four stars. It’s still worth getting if you are a Simone fan.

Nina Lives
Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2021The sound quality and packaging on this project are A+. Nina's vocals while sometimes raw are passionate throughout. Her piano playing of course is superb. Her banter and occasional short fuse with the audience is fascinating. So much talent, yet such a sad person. If only Nina realized how much her music crossed boundaries, racial and otherwise.

Nina Simone at Montreux
Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2021This is a 2 CD set - the first disk is a compilation of several times she appeared at the festival. The second disk is a gem - a complete recording of her electrifying 1968 appearance at the festival. It is riveting and makes the listeners think as they listen.

Serban Streza4 out of 5 starsNot quite what I was expecting
Reviewed in Australia on September 8, 2022These lp are not the style that Nina Simone is known for. A bit disappointed but this is because of my expectations, not the quality of the album. Try to listen to it online before ordering. I don't regret the buy since it shows a bit different side of her.

ARMANDO5 out of 5 starsL'immensa NINA SIMONE in un insieme di vari LIVE AT MONTREUX doppio VINILE
