French Emperor. He ruled France as Emperor Napoleon I from May 1804 to April 1814 and again briefly from March 1815 to June 1815.


Napoleon's remains were transferred to Paris in 1840 and placed in the special tomb of the Invalides in 1861. The original burial site remains as a historical marker and cenotaph.

Napoleon's sarcophagus is placed on a green granite pedestal and contains five coffins nested inside: one made of soft iron, one made of mahogany, two made of lead, and one made of ebony.
