Eight The Flint Journal, Flint, Michigan Sunday, November 8, 1964 Chevrolet Uses Lab Railroad Car To Help Solve Shipping Problems By the time Chevrolet production of its 1965 vehicles, it of them already had "shipped" some thousands of miles in its laboratory railroad car in Detroit. The laboratory rail car actually a huge cage simulating a compartment in a multilevel railroad car is used to determine the best way to tie down autos and trucks for shipping. With vibrating machinery beneath the six-ton car, test can duplicate nearly anything a car or truck might experience during shipment. The same testing method also is used to determine best methods of packing and shipping engines, sheet metal and other ning shipping tests on the Cor-1 vair, introduced in 1959 as the industry started shipping fully assembled cars in multilevel, lopen-faced rail cars. Early tests were far different from the present pushbutton, laboratory method.

The first Corvairs shipped by rail were tied down on bilevel cars as technicians watched from an adjacent caboose, checking instruments wired to the shipping car. The technicians traveled thousands of miles to all parts of the country to make their tests. It was decided the same re; sults could be accomplished more efficiently if a railroad simulator could be constructed. Material handling and design and instrumentation engineers joined efforts to work out and build the simulator. The device, even duplicates "humping" of railroad cars by sending the laboratory version against a large planked wall.

From January until the 1965 models were introduced to the public, prototypes of the new Chevrolets were given about 25,000 miles of testing. Models given the most extentests are those with the greatest design changes. This year, emphasis was put on shipping of the Corvair and the regular Chevrolet. Air Conditioner Sales Climb More Drivers Playing It Cool By CHARLES C. CAIN DETROIT (AP)-An ever increasing number of motorists are really cool these days as a result of a steady climb in the auto air conditioner market. Over a million 1 1964 cars were outfitted with factory-installed air conditioning and the industry looks for an even higher figune with its 1965 models.

Use of such units has come into its own of late, doubling its penetration of total car production every three years from 4.6 per cent of auto output in 1958 to 8.1 per cent in 1961 and a record 17.9 per cent in the 1964 models. This rate of acceptance coupled with stronger auto sales generally has seen cars built with air conditioners increase from 414,000 in the 1960 models to 1,412,000 in the 1964 model year. New Test Road Opened at GM Technical Center The test road at the General Motors Technical Center at Warren is now a divided highway. Opened last week was a 2.6 mile stretch of two-lane, concrete road, which is separated from the old road by a guardrail. Both the old road, resurfaced with asphalt, and the new road are 24 feet wide.

The expanded road is used for quick test runs of automotive and truck components and has a wire embedded in the center of each lane for automatic vehicle guidance experiments. Although extended test programs are carried out at the GM Proving Ground at Milford, more than 18,000 tests were conducted at the Technical Center last year.
