Adobe Audition

Anyone else in the post sound world despise Adobe Audition with a passion? Currently working on a final mix for a client; their previous sound team used Audition and due to tight schedules I was not able to transfer the project into ProTools, so had to work in Audition instead. The MOST buggy, awful software I've ever encountered. Even on a top of the line workstation, it could barely play back a standard (under 100 tracks) session without skipping, freezing, crashing, and otherwise acting like a drunken donkey. Tried pre-rendering everything. Tried reducing video quality. Tried adjusting sample rate. Tried deleting preferences. Tried re-installing. Tried asking it nicely. Eventually it sort of worked. And then didn't.

So please...share your hatred everyone!! I must vent.

P.S. Still can't get it to play a 1080 ProRes file at more than 1/2 resolution without skipping and sending my CPU usage to 100%. I WANT IT TO DIE.

Today's inquiry is around the use (and frequency of use) of Adobe Audition. Whether in your video workflow or in general... do you use Audition? If so, how do you use it/what for? And if not... why not? What's your replacement/alternative? You know I love all the nerdy details.

If you've ever watched my livestreams, you'll know that I'm using Audition...for everything. Even composition and tracking of all music, for anything I do. Yes. I struggle through it (because I, like many, use soft-synths/VSTi's) but I do this because I don't use MIDI or sequencing, so everything is played/is a live performance -- because it has to be. Again, I wouldn't mind sequencing (sometimes I do crave it) but I also prefer live recording, and it's just something I've done for a very long time.

I truly believe that Audition's strength is in super-fast, transparent audio EDITING, particularly when it comes to spectral editing and also dithering. I've used all the ones out there (starting w/the original Sound Designer in the late 80s/early 90s) and Audition is still my go-to.

I'm really curious about your usage (and I'll be posting this to the AU subreddit a little later).

As always, if the answer is no, hell no, or some variation thereof... let me know. I want to hear it. I'd love to see Audition (ultimately) become a larger part of your workflow. Thanks, as always.

I'm personally not a fan of Adobe's business model and economics from a consumer position. It'd be great if there's a good economical alternative.

I only need one feature in Adobe Audition, that is enhancing the voice quality for my podcast.

I don't need anything else in Adobe Audition. Not interested in paying $29 per month only for this one option.

Is there any other alternative (like Affinity for Photoshop) that I can use and get going with a one-time subscription?

Got Lavelia's microphone from a friend.

Wanted to record an audio for one project and I wanted to know which software is probably better to record and remove things like background noise, reflection etc. environments here are not quite quiet enough.

Have no experience in doing Voice overs.

Tried AI TTS at first but got feedback that it's worse and I have to use my own voice.

Any advice or tips are much appreciated.

Hello. I'm in need of a new DAW, since Garageband doesn't seem ideal for my needs. I'm attracted to Reaper, which I know musicians love, and it's a one-time negligible fee (still $60, I believe). The question, then, is why people are paying $20 a month for Adobe Audition. There must be a reason for agreeing to a subscription that quickly adds up, rather than going for a DAW such as Reaper. Any thoughts, experience would be welcome. Thanks!

I'm editing in Premiere and color grading in Davinci and I usually use Audition for my Audio needs. Since Resolve got quite a bit better in the video editing department I was wondering how good Fairlight is in comparison with Audition for mix and master videos with multiple songs and voice overs?

I get reaper is free and Adobe audition is 20 bucks a month. But 20 bucks a month isn't a big deal and I'd rather pick whichever one will suit me best.

I have no experience in editing audio what so ever. And the type of VO I'd love to get into would be animation and video games.

And a follow up question. I heard most VO work is done at home now correct? For those of who you have and are currently getting work. How much do you need to edit your own audio? When you're done recording a script, are you supposed to edit your own audio and send it to the studio so they can do final touch ups?

Or are you supposed to send it in, unedited so they can fine tune it exactly how they want?

I ask because I imagine editing your audio for say, a radio type voice or a commercial would be quite different than say, for an anime and a video game? Are there different "know hows" I should be looking into? Because It sounds tricky if someone were to learn how to edit their voice one way, but would have no idea how to edit it for say, an anime or a game.

I know I can use

Match Audio loudness Compress single band Normalize vocals

But I haven't figure out exactly how to normalize a single track where one of my cohost will not speak into the mic at some points and laugh right into it at other times. In the end I have to be manually fixing all the low and high parts and it gets to be too much.

I know mic control would help with this and I'm working on it with them but for now I'm stuck with what I have recorded.

Any advice or actual steps to make the whole track an even sound?
