Despite some impressive kills and a respectable body count, Heart Eyes is more romcom than slasher. However, it's a genre mishmash that creates a wholly unexpected delight. Imagine Jason Voorhees stumbling onto the set of Sleepless in Seattle or an entry in the Scream franchise directed by Garry Marshall.

Yes. Take Your Bae to go see this because its really damn Good The fact that it was a Rom-Com Slasher had me pleasantly surprised because I went in expecting it to be more heavy on the horror Mason Gooding (given this dudes magnificent Charisma) carries the film almost entirely on his back but the plot, character chemistry and inevitable romance and the villian motives all tie up rather nicely at the End Being generous, 9/10. Left cheesing all things considered

heart eyes is a bloody comedy with good deaths, it's a Scream but a little different, good acting, although the attitudes of some characters can be quite idiotic, but it's quite common in films. At no point did I want to leave the cinema, as I managed to have a good laugh.

Similar to that of co-writer Christopher Landon's own oeuvre of recent horror ventures, Josh Ruben's "Heart Eyes" aims for a twist on the slasher genre that mostly hits the mark. In a manner not unlike those "Happy Death Day" films of Landon's, the twist in this does kind of end up taking the wheel away from any genuine "scariness," but with as likable as these two leads are, I guess it doesn't hurt to keep them a priority. Sure, there are a few fun kills here and there, but the real draw of this is the relationship at the center of things. With that, I do wish the film aimed for more of a "Scream-like" tone, where humor is present, but not the prevailing objective of so many scenes. Some of the "tongue-in-cheek-iness" is laid on a little bit too thick for my tastes. Still, that may make this an easier watch for others. So, no, nothing's really being reinvented here, but it's still good fun at times.

Olivia Holt plays an advertising creative who was recently dumped. In a meet cute, she befriends a man (Mason Gooding) and they end up on the run from the titular character. This serial killer's angle is that it only kills romantic couples on Valentine's Day, while wearing the mask with 2 hearts. As this genre goes, there are quick, brutal and somewhat original kills to elicit squeals of delightful horror. Considering the release date, this film is teetering on the romcom angle with the duo's burgeoning relationship. This reduces the thrills more than once. Their chemistry is OK with Gooding effectively handling the minor moments of humor. As with many slasher flix, it's necessary to ignore reality (2 examples: an understaffed, dark police station and a packed Seattle drive-in in February). There is some originality in the concept and execution, but too much romance, not nearly enough tension and way too many holes in the logic to only get 2.5 hearts from me.
