Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (BBC America): Ratings Recap

One of my really good friends, and my travel companion on the recent trip to LA, is big fan of BBC America's short-lived program 'Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency' and so I've heard all about this show for a while now. So it seemed apt to finally do a recap of its ratings. The show premiered October 22, 2016 to an OK 0.12 adults 18-49 rating and 437,000 viewers, but spent the majority of its 8-episode first season at around 0.09 in the demo and between 200K-300K viewers which was apparently high enough to warrant a second-season renewal. The second season aired in fall 2017 and rated just slightly below the first, at 0.07 in the demo and about 250,000 viewers. It was not renewed for a third season and aired just 18 episodes over the course of its run.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (WB/UPN): Ratings Recap

'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' premiered on the WB March 10, 1997 with a 3.2/5 household rating/share and 4.59 million viewers - solid numbers based on the low-rated WB network was getting at the time. It sunk to as few as 2.47 million viewers in its short 12-episode first season, but rebounded up to 4 million by its finale. The show's ratings soared in its second season, averaging 5.7 million viewers and reaching well over 7 million (and over 3.0 in the 18-49 demo) for a slew of episodes in January 1998. The show's third season logged the highest average viewership of any season (6.1 million) despite some scheduling weirdness which pushed the high-rated season finale (6.53 million viewers; 3.1/10 A18-49) out to mid-July 1999. 'Buffy' remained remarkably stable for the next few seasons, pulling in over 5.2 million viewers on-average and holding at comfortably higher than a 2.0 demo rating. The show moved networks over to UPN where its sixth season premiere was reported to have logged the highest 18-49 rating (3.8/10) and second-best viewership (7.65 million) of its entire run, and viewership for the season as a whole actually averaged slightly higher than the previous 2 WB runs at 5.34 million. A seventh and final season premiered in 2002 with the fall portion holding at just around 5 million viewers, but unfortunately the 2003 portion fell into the 3-4 million range and below a 2.0 A18-49 rating and the show was not renewed. Note: I only have very limited 18-49 information for the first 3 seasons, but there is full data beginning with season 4.

Sporadic posting for the next week

Hello, starting tomorrow and for the next week or so I will be away in Los Angeles, so I will be not be posting any old 2000-2002 ratings data until I return. I will try to have the top 200 reruns for the week ending March 6th posted on Monday per usual, but the broadcast, cable ratings, and news ratings may be delayed until next Thursday or Friday.

Also, just as an update: I recently finished posting all of the data from the 2009-10 TV season and have transitioned over to working on summer & fall 2014/spring 2015. I will return to do the 2010-11 season at some point (hopefully before summer), but I've felt compelled to do 2014-15 for a while now, so I just want to get that over with. The posts from this period are being back-dated and this will be continue to be the case for all posts in the 2013-14 season & 2014-15 season. When they are eventually completed, the 2010-11, 2011-12, and 2012-13 seasons will posted as normal and not back-dated.

Finally, my goal is to have the 2000-01, 2001-02, and 2002-03 seasons completed by the end of the summer.

Ryan :)

Intruders (BBC America): Ratings Recap

BBC America's 'The Intruders' premiered August 23, 2014 to a 0.23 adults 18-49 rating and 796,000 viewers, which in any other circumstance would've been great numbers for the network. But this program had a sizable 'Doctor Who' lead-in of 0.85 & 2.2 million which it was only able to hold about a third. In week 2 it tumbled down to 0.08 & 366,000 viewers and remained well-below even that low mark for the rest of its run - holding only about a fourth of the 'Doctor Who' numbers. Needless to say, it was not renewed for a second season.

Euphoria (HBO): Ratings Recap

HBO's 'Euphoria' premiered June 16, 2019 to a 0.17 adults 18-49 rating with 577,000 viewers and averaged 560,000 linear TV viewers over the course of its first 8 episodes. Based on the available data, linear viewers seemed to account for about half of total same-night viewership during the first season with HBO reporting 1.2 million multi-platform viewers for the first season finale. A second season aired two-and-a-half years later and saw a significant decline in linear viewership, premiering to just 254,000 viewers and averaging below 350,000 throughout its run. Interestingly, the multi-platform portion of the audience rose to nearly 90% this season according to HBO's numbers, so with those figures included, the show averaged about 4 million viewers per episode. It concluded its second-season with the largest linear audience (625,000) and largest multi-platform audience (6.6 million) of its entire run and will be back for a third season. Note: I included a table at the bottom with ratings for the second season same-night re-airings, but I don't have that data for the first season. Additionally, I included HBO's reported multi-platform viewers (presented in millions) in the tables for episodes that the data was available for (even though the validity of these numbers is in dispute).

FOX's Sunday comedy block has, by far, the youngest-skewing shows on broadcast with 'Bob's Burgers' the youngest (median age: 46.9) and 'Family Guy' (47.0), 'Great North' (48.7), and 'The Simpsons' (49.8) just behind.

Premium Cable Versus the Super Bowl

This was the Super Bowl-related post I was going to make before seeing NBC's press release and switching gears over to write something about that. I've always been fascinated by the decision making of networks to air new episodes of programs at the same time that the Super Bowl is airing. As the game is - by far - the largest ratings generator of the year, and towers above everything else, it seems odd on the surface for networks to continue with regularly scheduled programming while it is airing. Yet, a few still do.

Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO): Ratings Recap

HBO's 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' premiered October 15, 2000 to a 2.1 HH rating and 3.1 million viewers, but tumbled in its second week to 1.8 million and was reported to have averaged 1.2 million viewers in its first 10 episodes (but I don't have enough information to verify this). A second season aired in fall 2001 with most of its episodes airing on the same nights as HBO's huge miniseries 'Band of Brothers'. HBO's ratings in this time were very high in-general, so the majority of the season 2 episodes were not in the weekly top 5, and as a result: only data for 2 of the season's episodes are available. Assuming the numbers for those episodes are in-line for the rest of the season, it looks like the show performed much better than it did in first, likely in the mid-2 millions. The third season (2002) represented the peak of the show's performance, airing behind the highest-rated season of 'The Sopranos' where it took full advantage - averaging about 4.5 million viewers. It also received a slight boost in its fourth season (3.1 million) which initially aired behind the final season of 'Sex and the City' with the last 2 episodes airing behind the fifth-season of 'The Sopranos.' The numbers crumbled after that though, to 1.3 million in 2005 (airing behind the moderately-rated 'Rome'), and to 965,000 in 2007 (where it had no notable lead-in). It managed to pick up steam in the next two seasons, averaging about 1.2 million 2009 and just under 2 million in 2011, but then took a 6-year break and returned back down just over 1 million in fall 2017. It declined even further in 2020 (663,000) and fell to its lowest numbers ever in 2021 (441,000). There is no word yet on the status of a 12th season. Note: due to the lack of data available, the viewership average for season 6 comes from an official published source (The Los Angeles Times).

The Circus (Showtime): Ratings Recap

Showtime's 'The Circus' premiered January 17, 2016 to a minuscule 0.02 adults 18-49 rating and 97,000 viewers and nearly doubled in its second week before settling at about 0.06 in the demo and just under 200K viewers on-average. Unfortunately, full ratings data isn't available for the first season and there is no data available at all for the second season, but the the next four seasons all managed around 0.03-0.05 in the demo and was in the low-to-mid 200K viewers which is not exactly a shining performance, but there is something to be said for stability. That apparently is good enough for Showtime which has renewed the series for a seventh season.

Getting On (HBO): Ratings Recap

HBO's 'Getting On' premiered November 24, 2013 to a low 520,000 viewers, but the 18-49 rating is unfortunately not known. It was never a high-ratings generator for HBO with the first season episodes mostly pulling just over 300K viewers and the following 2 seasons in the mid-to-high 200K range. It lasted longer than can probably be expected considering those numbers, but since its seasons only had 6 episodes, it only aired 18 episodes over the course of its 3 seasons. Note: the ratings for episodes 2-6 of the first season come from a source with direct access to Nielsen ratings and are not the primetime averages reported in The Futon Critic.

Some Broadcast Subdemos: Week Ending February 6, 2022

These days, sub-demographic ratings data for broadcast programs is not nearly as readily available as it is for cable programs. ShowBuzzDaily obviously posts 8 different sub-demos daily for the top 50 cable programs, but for broadcast, they unfortunately only provide demographic shares for men & women 18-49. I see some of this data every so often, but only for the higher-rated programs, so here is a peak at some of the sub-demos for the most-recent week I have data for. If a particular sub-demo isn't included for a show then I don't have it.

Super Bowl LVI Ratings Comparisons: What is the Truth?

Network spin is nothing new, and nothing I haven't talked about in-depth before - most recently in regards to HBO and "Euphoria." However, there really isn't anything quite like Super Bowl-spin. It being by far the most-watched event of the year, its ratings are reported in basically any and every U.S. news publication you can think of, and this reporting is often lifted directly from the network press release. NBC's press release is actually not bad as it's pretty transparent with the ratings; my only qualm is with the historical comparisons.

Looking at the linear TV viewership, Nielsen reported 99.178 million viewers for the game, and NBC does acknowledge this figure in their release - rounding it to an even 99.2 million. Nielsen also reported, and NBC acknowledges, an additional 1.91 million viewers on Spanish-language network Telemundo. Together, this is a linear TV total of about 101.09 million viewers. All of that is fine. The issue comes with how the streaming audience is integrated into their Total Audience Delivery (TAD) figure.

Ratings for the 2022 AFC & NFC Championship Games

While we await the ratings for Super Bowl LVI, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the numbers from the 2 conference championship games from 2 weeks ago. To begin, 2022 marked the third straight year of the NFC game beating the AFC game (2020, 2021, 2022) in total viewership after the AFC game dominated the previous four years (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019). Detailed breakdowns are provided for each game below:

Top Streaming (SVOD) Ratings: w/e Dec. 19, 2021 - w/e Jan. 16, 2022

I have not done as good a job at keeping up with posting the weekly Nielsen streaming ratings as I would've liked to, so here are the charts for the most-recent five weeks of data. Even if/when the weekly posts are delayed, I always update the individual show charts which are located in the "Streaming Archive" under the "Ratings Archive Directory" tab.

Per usual, the charts below includes the top 10 original programs, top 10 movies, and top 10 acquired programs from Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV+ measured on total minutes of watch-time. The data represents only viewing within the U.S. and comes from Nielsen Media Research.

It has been a very strong five weeks on streaming with a number of 2 billion+ minute performances. First, Netflix debuted the second season 'The Witcher' Dec. 17th, and it ranked atop the chart for 2 straight weeks with 2.19 billion minutes in its first 3 days of availability and an additional 2.73 billion the week after. It likely would've remained atop the chart for a few more weeks had it not been for the fourth-season drop of 'Cobra Kai' which delivered 2.43 billion minutes in its first 3 days (week ending Jan. 2) and held at #1 among originals the following 2 weeks. Both dwarfed the second-season launch of 'Emily in Paris' which had 938 million in its first 5 days and 1.11 billion the week after. Among movies, the story of the last 2 months has been Disney+'s 'Encanto' which logged its first full week at an impressive 2.2 billion minutes and then spent the next two weeks at just around 1.5 billion (leading among all streaming programs in the w/e Jan. 16). Finally, among acquired programming, 'Cocomelon' reached 11 straight weeks at #1 before finally (and likely temporarily) being dethroned by 'NCIS'.

Super Bowl Ratings (1967-present)

UPDATED FOR SUPER BOWL LVI: Below are the Nielsen ratings for every Super Bowl back to Super Bowl I in 1967. There are several columns of data in the chart below, including HH data (presented in ratings form & viewership form), average viewership, and total viewership for every game. Average viewership is the standard viewership metric while total viewership refers to the number of unique people who watched at least 6 minutes of the broadcast. Beginning with Super Bowl XX in 1986, local market ratings are included for both competing cities, and beginning with Super Bowl XXVI in 1992, 18-49 ratings are available. Nielsen SVOD Ratings: Netflix Originals (first charting in 2022)

Below is an archive of Nielsen streaming/video-on-demand (SVOD) ratings organized by program title (A-Z). This post in particular includes only Netflix programs that had their first appearance on the charts in 2022. There are simply too many different Netflix programs to include all of the originals in one table, so they are being divided by the year they first appeared on the chart. There are other posts for Netflix "originals" that first charted in 2020 & 2021, and there are additional posts for "acquired" programs, and for "original" programs from other platforms. The first sheet is an index which lists of all of the available shows with data, how many weeks each has appeared in the Nielsen chart, as well as both the most-recent week they've appeared and the first week they appeared. Each show page can be accessed by clicking its hyperlink at the top of the sheet. (This is not the prettiest organization in the world, but it's the best that can be done as of right now).

Gilmore Girls (WB/CW): Ratings Recap

I don't post broadcast "ratings recaps" very often, but I recently got into watching 'Gilmore Girls' and, after doing some research, realized the ratings had never been posted in full before. So with that, the WB's 'Gilmore Girls' premiered October 5, 2000 with a 1.9/5 adults 18-49 rating/share and 5.03 million viewers, but fell into the low 1.3-1.4 range and 3-4 million viewers for the majority of its first season. This first season aired on Thursdays as a lead-in for 'Charmed,' but it was moved to Tuesdays as a lead-in for 'Angel' in its second season where the ratings soared. That season saw the 18-49 figure leap to 2.4 on-average, with viewership up to 5.6 million. The numbers peaked in its third season, to 2.5 in the demo & 5.8 million viewers, but dipped back down to 2.0 & 4.9 million in its fourth season. Interestingly, the ratings rose again in the fifth season to season 2 levels despite holding the same 'One Tree Hill' lead-out from the fourth season, and those numbers remained relatively stable into the sixth season which logged a 2.4 & 5.5 million. A seventh and final season aired in 2006-07, averaging its lowest 18-49 rating (1.95) and viewership (4.38 million) since season 1. A four episode reboot titled 'Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life' premiered in November 2016 on Netflix, but numbers were never released for its performance. The original 'Gilmore Girls' continues to perform well on Netflix where it relatively consistently ranks in the Nielsen (SVOD) top 10 lists. That full history is available here.

The Good Witch (Hallmark): Ratings Recap

Hallmark Channel's 'The Good Witch' premiered as a series of TV movies, the first of which began January 19, 2008 with a strong 4.23 million viewers. It aired a total of seven movies prior to its first season premiere which delivered a 0.27 adults 18-49 rating and 2.9 million viewers in its February 2015 premiere. The first season averaged a 0.17 rating and just over 2.1 million viewers, and the second season in 2016 held those viewership numbers, but interestingly saw a nice rise in the 18-49 demo (to 0.25). The next three seasons saw remarkable stability, each averaging about 2.1 million viewers and just over 0.2 in the demo, but that growth was halted in 2020's sixth season which dipped slightly to a 0.16 rating and 1.87 million viewers. A seventh and final season aired in 2021, falling to a 0.12 rating on-average and 1.58 million viewers.

Top Streaming (SVOD) Ratings: Week Ending December 12, 2021

Below are the weekly streaming/video-on-demand (SVOD) ratings for the week ending December 12, 2021. The chart below includes the top 10 original programs, top 10 movies, and top 10 acquired programs from Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV+ measured on total minutes of watch-time. The data represents only viewing within the U.S. and comes from Nielsen Media Research.

There were no new debuts among originals this week on the Nielsen SVOD ratings chart. Netflix's 'Lost in Space' held atop the chart for a second week with just over 1 billion minutes of watch-time, down slightly from the week prior's 1.2 billion while 'True Story' (also Netflix) fell from #2 to #9 among originals (607 million to 255 million), enabling Disney+'s 'Hawkeye' to rise 3-2 with solid retention for its third week (527 million). On the movie front, Disney+'s 'Home Alone' (307 million) and Hulu's 'Elf' (296 million) soared to take the top 2 spots, while on the acquired programming front, 'Cocomelon' ranked #1 for a seventh week (835 million).

Euphoria Ratings: Discussion

I've written extensively on the subject of ratings for streaming services, and in particular, the need for both transparency and 3rd party verification. Netflix has taken solid steps forward in regards to the former with the launch of their weekly top 10 website, and Nielsen has attempted to account for the latter with their weekly SVOD lists. But unfortunately, HBO Max does not regularly release their own data, nor are they accounted for in the weekly Nielsen SVOD lists. So when I see articles like this one from Variety I really start to question it.

HBO reported that 2.4 million people watched the premiere of 'Euphoria' on Sunday January 9th, a number that apparently includes both live viewership on HBO as well as viewership on HBO Max. Now, this is an interestingly high number considering that only 254,000 people watched the program on HBO on the night of its premiere according to Nielsen data. An additional 86,000 watched its 11:30pm rerun, so that is a linear-TV-total of 340,000. With this, we are expected to believe that nearly 86% of the viewership (~2.06 million) came from HBO Max? It's totally possible that this is true, but we have to look at this number with some skepticism.

Saved (TNT): Ratings Recap

TNT's 'Saved' premiered June 12, 2006 behind the second-season premiere of 'The Closer,' logging 5.1 million viewers and a 1.6 adults 18-49 rating (versus 8.3 million & 2.0 for 'Closer'). While 'The Closer' averaged between 5.5 and 7 million viewers throughout the season, 'Saved' was only able to hold onto about half of that, ranging in the high 2-million to low 3-million range. It managed to conclude on a high-note with 3.94 million and the show averaged 3.46 million over its 13 episodes. This was apparently not high enough for TNT to warrant a second season renewal. Note: the average viewership figure comes from official published sources and is not simply the average of the available data in the table.

Cable TV Ratings: Week Ending December 26, 2021

Unfortunately it doesn't look like I'm going to be receiving the full weekly cable data for the week of Dec. 20-26th, so this week's cable recap was done using ShowBuzzDaily's data. This means that the chart doesn't have all of the lower-rated numbers I usually include and also means I can't take any requests for this week. Sorry!

Below is a recap of the cable TV ratings for the week ending December 26, 2021. This is merely a selection of original airings and does not include every single program that aired in the week. Syndicated programming, sports news, and non-original movies are not included in these charts.

Weekly Nielsen Ratings: 1978-79 TV Season

Below are the weekly Nielsen ratings results for the 1978-79 television season. Viewership wasn't reported by Nielsen until the fall 1988 season, so up until that point the only metric widely available was the household rating (which is what is reported here in this article). To calculate the estimated number of households watching, just multiply each rating by 745,000 as that is what 1 rating point represents.

Full weekly household ratings for every show weren't made available until 1981, so only partial results are available for this season. Only the top 10 results are available for the first seven weeks of the season (from the Raleigh News and Observer), but beginning with the w/e Nov. 5, 1978 there are the top 15 results available (from from The New York Times). Top 20 results are available starting with the w/e Mar. 25, 1979 (from Newsday) and are provided through the end of the season, save for 2 weeks (May 6, 1979 & Sept. 2, 1979) where only the top 15 is available.

Additionally, the second document includes full rankings (without ratings) from The Fort Worth Star-Telegram and these are available for nearly every week of the proper season (not the summer) except for the following weeks: w/e Dec. 17, 1978, Dec. 24, 1978 (top 20 and bottom 10 are provided in the "ratings" document), Dec. 31, 1978, January 14, 1979 (top 20 and bottom 5), and January 21, 1979 (top 20 and bottom 10). The final week of full rankings is the week ending April 15, 1979.

NFL Regular Season Local Market Ratings: 2021-22

Below are the full local market Nielsen ratings for all 30 NFL markets and all 18 weeks of the season. This data only accounts for households watching the NFL game featuring the team from that market.  There are two tables below: the first includes the percentage of TV homes, while the second table includes the total number of homes (in thousands). For example: 16.5% of homes in the Atlanta area (or 370,000 total households) watched the Falcons' week 1 game. New York and Los Angeles have two teams in their markets, so each market appears twice in the list with the viewership for the respective game.

The data is in Live+1 as that is the standard that the Television Bureau of Advertising uses. This accounts for live viewing and viewing within 24 hours of the game broadcast. With sports programming specifically, there is virtually no difference between Live+Same day and timeshifted +1, +3, or +7 since the vast majority of people watch sports live. I'd obviously prefer a L+SD rating as I think using L+1 is goofy at best, but this is how the information is available. Note: I'm missing data from the New Orleans market for weeks 1 & 3. Also, I will update with week 18 when that data becomes available. I'm not going to include the data for week 18 because after looking at the report, I'm convinced that it is incorrect top-to-bottom. It shows essentially every single market being down from previous weeks which is at completely odds with the national ratings.

Futurama's Return to Adult Swim: Full Week Ratings

It totally slipped my mind that last week marked the return of Futurama to syndication on Adult Swim for the first time in nearly 14 years. A good friend of mine is huge fan of the show (and she is trying very hard to get me into it), so in honor of its return, here are the full Nielsen ratings for all of its airings from Dec. 27, 2021 through Jan. 2, 2022. I don't know how these numbers compare to what was there before, but with enough interest, I could potentially dig that up.

Top Streaming (SVOD) Ratings: Week Ending December 5, 2021

Below are the weekly streaming/video-on-demand (SVOD) ratings for the week ending December 5, 2021.

The third season drop of Netflix's 'Lost in Space' propelled it to the top of the streaming SVOD ratings for the week ending December 5th. The show logged 1.2 billion minutes of watch-time in the week, nearly double what the second-ranked original, 'True Story,' had (607 million). Disney+'s 'Hawkeye' took the third spot, losing about 300 million in its second week (to 560 million) while Amazon's 'The Wheel of Time' ranked 4th with 537 million. On the movie front, Netflix's new film 'The Power of the Dog' ranked #1 with 470 million minutes, ending the 3-week reign of 'Red Notice' which tumbled to #3 this week (and lost 600 million minutes). Finally, 'Cocomelon' spent a sixth week leading all acquired programming (786 million).

Music Data: Week Ending December 30, 2021

Below are three charts with music data from the week ending December 30, 2021. The first chart includes the top 10 albums of the week based on total weekly units sold according to Billboard (and usually a small select number albums below the top 10). The next two charts document the top songs of the week based on total number of plays on U.S. pop radio. The top chart comes from Nielsen/BDS and includes the top 40 songs of the week, while the bottom chart comes from Mediabase and includes the top 50 songs of the week. The key difference between the charts is that Nielsen/BDS uses computers to monitor radio stations while Mediabase uses humans. Additionally, the Nielsen/BDS chart is what goes into the Billboard Hot 100 formula. Finally, note that the tracking week for album sales is Friday-Thursday while the tracking week for radio is Sunday-Saturday.

Weekly Nielsen Ratings: 1979-80 TV Season

Below are the weekly Nielsen ratings results for the 1979-80 television season. Viewership wasn't reported by Nielsen until the fall 1988 season, so up until that point the only metric widely available was the household rating (which is what is reported here in this article). To calculate the estimated number of households watching, just multiply each rating by 763,000 as that is what 1 rating point represents.

Full weekly household ratings for every show weren't made available until 1981, so only partial results are available for this season. Most weeks have the top 20 weekly ratings available, but 2 weeks have only the top 15 (Dec. 23, 1979 & Jan. 13, 1980) and 1 week has only the top 10 (May 4, 1980). The data for the top 20 programs comes from Newsday, data for the top 15 programs comes from The New York Times, and the data for the top 10 comes from the Raleigh News and Observer.

Additionally, the second document includes full rankings (without ratings) from The Fort Worth Star-Telegram and these are available for nearly every week of the proper season (not the summer) except for the following weeks: w/e Dec. 23, 1979 (only top 20), Dec. 30, 1979, Jan. 6, 1980, and May 11, 1980. The final week of full rankings is the week ending May 18, 1980.
