I have nielsen ratings for entire 1985-86 and 86 TV season but unfortunately I can't find viewership numbers for 87-88 and 88-89 TV season.
ReplyDeleteI believe the first time that viewership figures were available in USA Today was the week ending July 31, 1988 which would be the very end of the 1987-88 season. I think I have the HH ratings/shares for the 1985-86, 1986-87, and 1987-88 seasons, but for 1988-89, I need to get to a library at some point to grab those USA Todays on microfilm, but can't do that yet until COVID restrictions go away unfortunately.
DeleteI have viewership numbers for premiere week of 87-88 TV season (both Cosby and ADW had 43.4 million viewers) and HH rating/share (but without number of viewers). Data for both weeks are from USA Today.
ReplyDeleteHi, if you are willing to share your data, please feel free to email me at: consultantsmtl@gmail.com. I don't have any USA Todays prior to Sept 1989, so anything you have would be very helpful. I just put together & posted the weekly results for 1985-86. They are all in HH because that's all I have, but if you have the viewership numbers for those years (I didn't think those were available?), I'd love to have those as well.
DeleteViewership numbers started with 1987-88 season, I'll send you HH and shares for 1986-87 TV season and first 2 weeks from 87-88 from USA Today. I can't access ProQuest therefore I can't get my hand on USA Today articles on nielsen ratings for 87-88 and 88-89 TV season.
DeleteWow! Since Cheers was on the same day as Cosby's premiere of that season, do you mind sharing how many viewers the season 6 premiere of Cheers had? Assuming the data exists of course.
DeleteHi, please note that the viewership for the 1987-88 TV season does not come from Nielsen. Nielsen did not begin releasing viewership figures until July 1988, so for the 1987-88 season USA Today used viewership from a different company called AGB Television Research. With that being said, on September 25, 1987 "Cheers" had 37.4 million viewers (AGB) and a 28.4/44 HH rating (Nielsen).
DeleteI have not published data for the 1987-88 season yet because I have not yet decided whether or not to include the AGB numbers. I am inclined not to because I want all the data here to be from Nielsen, but I may change my mind on that, so we'll see. In the meantime, if there are any additional numbers you want from either 1987-88 or 1988-89, just let me know!
Thanks for the info! I can understand why you would not want to include them, as it's best to have a consistent source.
ReplyDeleteWith that being said, I certainly wish you'd reconsider. After all, AGB was the only source for viewership for the 1987-1988 season, so in that case, we wouldn't really have another choice (Nielsen) to compare against.
Now, I wonder, how come the total viewers for the M*A*S*H finale, for example, are known? Was that calculated by a different source than Nielsen? Cause if it was Nielsen, were they only doing so for big events? Just something I have been wondering.
If I recall correctly, Nielsen didn't launch the people meter until 1987 so all viewership figures prior to that would be purely estimates derived from the total number of households. So for M*A*S*H finale, the ~106 million figure is an estimate of the average viewers and the ~121 million figure is an estimate of the total number of unduplicated viewers I believe.
DeleteAnd yeah I hear what you're saying. If you want the AGB figures included then I can certainly do that with a clarification included in the post. The only issue is that I don't actually have the physical USA Today clippings from either 1987-88 or 1988-89, just the raw data in a digital format on Excel, so it will take some time to format correctly and then figure out how to best present it. I will probably pick up working on that when I finish up with the summer 1999 weeklys.
