Gary Numan and Michael R Smith* ‎– Human

Having wanted to get this for years, I was pretty disappointed with what I heard. What I had expected it to sound like--eerie and ambient electronic instrumentals in the style of Asylum, which spawned the arrangement to compose this soundtrack--is very much nothing like you actually do get in any of the 36 tracks.

This was recorded during the Metal Rhythm-era, and it retains that same dancey pop ethic even while it tries to be creepy. It does succeed a little on a few tracks, but the outdated keyboards and synths and drum machines, while working well on, say, Outland, do not have a good flavor on this album. So basically what I thought would be a moody atmosphere is little more than a cheesy new age record.

I will admit some tracks are good, but the ones that are really worth listening to have been recycled by Numan on Outland (on Human you basically hear an instrumental version of the song Soul Protection since they're so similar) and Machine+Soul's instrumental material. You can either appreciate the sampled pieces on those albums to hear all that you need from this soundtrack or just watch the movie 'Unborn', which I should've done in the stead getting this.

Overall, it may be a great piece in a Numan fan's collection, but I've listened to it maybe 3 times and now it has its own collection of dust.
