How do you combine two completely different musical styles-separated by 200 years-and make it seem natural? Domenico Scarlatti wrote experimental music of the European high-Baroque; John Cage pushed the boundaries of mid-20th century American avant-garde. Through the juxtaposition of their music, can we hear commonalities between the two radically different sound worlds? Pianist David Greilsammer holds the key. Catch him recorded live at The Phillips Collection this Sunday, F...ebruary 14 at 4 pm for a dynamic conversation between music Scarlatti and Cage. Greilsammer spins between one piano, prepared with screws, nuts, rubber and plastic according to Cage's directions, and the Phillips's own Steinway for sonatas by Scarlatti. It's time for the February edition of our #Phillips100 logo project! Each month, a new artist will iterate on our #Phillips100 logo, bringing their personal style and flare to our brand. This month, we welcome the work of artist Rose Jaffe, who wanted to foster a sense of connection with her redesign. "This redesign of the Phillips Logo is about connection; to each other, and to nature. In a moment of time where many feel a loss of physical connection, it comes alongside a moment where love and support are needed the most. This dichotomy leaves many to search for that connection in new places - virtually, one on one, and/or outside in nature. The hand holding fades to a composition of a bird in its habitat, an ode to the conservation work Lilli Steele does at the Phillips, often looking beneath the surface of a painting to reveal entirely different imagery." --Rose Jaffe On Thursday, February 4th at 6PM EST, Rose will join Elizabeth Steele, Head of Conservation at the Phillips, talk about the logo Rose created for the Phillips and how she worked with our conservation department to make it. Today, we're proudly kicking off our #Phillips100 logo project! Each month, a new artist will iterate on our #Phillips100 logo, bringing their personal style and flare to our brand. This month, artist and creative Dom Rabrun put his spin on our #Phillips100 logo, incorporating some of our most famous works. "Sampling and remixing is a critical tool for me- not only in how I approach my work, but how I see the world. I sampled four of the Phillips Collection's paintings and arranged them in chronological order- eighteenth century to the twenty-first century. The animated component of the logo is a nod to my love of neon signs, electronics, and digital media." Dominick Rabrun is a Maryland based artist, creative, and general maker of things. Dominick’s work is rooted in his Haitian American heritage, love of geek culture, and knowledge of art history. As founder of Blue Cerberus Studio in Silver Spring, he and his team and have created immersive animations and illustrations for clients like VICE, Genius, Reddit, and more.
