On this date in Sports Odds History...
1986 (NBA): Michael Jordan dropped an NBA playoff-record 63 points but Chicago falls 135-131 in double-overime to the Boston Celtics in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference First Round. The Bulls covered the spread as 14-point underdogs as Boston only lost one game at home all season en route to winning the NBA Championship.
1990 (MLB): Oakland pinch-hitter Ken Phelps hit a home run on the first pitch to break up Seattle's Brian Holman's perfect game with 2 outs in the 9th inning. Holman would then strike out Rickey Henderson to end the game giving Seattle a 6-1 victory as the Mariners were +160 underdogs. Ironically, the round-tripper was the final one Phelps hits in his 11-year major league career.
1997 (MLB): As a +120 underdog, the Chicago Cubs fall to 0-14 after losing the first game of a double-header, 8-2, at Shea Stadium to the New York Mets. The second longest losing streak to begin a season in MLB history would come to and end in the second game when they beat the Mets, 4-3, as +130 underdogs. The Cubs would go on to finish 68-94 and go under their season win total of 79.
